Whether you are newly diagnosed or you havent paid any attention to your diabetes educator in the past, I am here for you. For many people, chocolate is a guilty pleasure and its one more thing you dont want to have to AVOID.
As a general rule, diabetics can eat chocolate, but if you have diabetes, you should aim to eat chocolate in moderation. Chocolate will affect your blood sugar levels, which is why it is important to not eat it in large quantities. Dark chocolate is a better choice for diabetics.
Once again, I recommend reading your food labels, as some chocolate products contain a significant amount of fat, as well as a significant amount of sugar.
Something to note about chocolate is that it can potentially improve insulin response and blood sugar due to the presence of flavanols.
Flavenols are potential anti-cancer agents. They display anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-microbial effects, and they may protect the liver.
Most of the chocolate that people eat will only contain very small amount of flavanols and very high amounts of sugar, but dark chocolate has more flavanols than milk or white chocolate.
In fact, dark chocolate is noted to be one of the top 10 sources of flavenols if you are doing Internet searches.
You can still have chocolate as a diabetic, but you should always be mindful of your intake of carbs. Lower-carbohydrate options are available when it comes to chocolate treats.

A healthful diet for a diabetic should have limited saturated fat and contain moderate or low amounts of salt and sugar. As a diabetes educator, my patients frequently ask me if they have to give up sweets as a part of their diabetic meal plan.
People with type 1 diabetes can still enjoy sweets as a treat, as well as other different types of sugary foods, as long as they are eaten in moderation and as part of a healthful and well-balanced diet.
Even though we love our sweets, it is best to save those sugary goodies for an occasional treat, and to make sure that you have them in smaller portions. As with any other food that a type 1 diabetic eats, it is important to be aware of how this food will affect blood glucose levels.
Many diabetics are asked to keep a food diary or food journal. How Much Chocolate Can A Diabetic Eat Per Day
The amount of chocolate a diabetic can eat per day is dependent on their individual health and medical background. If a diabetic is looking to incorporate chocolate into their diet, it is important to speak to their doctor and/or a certified dietitian first to determine how much is safe and beneficial.
In general, it is recommended that a diabetic consume no more than a few ounces of dark chocolate per day, as it contains less sugar than milk chocolate. Dark chocolate is still high in sugar, so it is important to keep portion control in mind.
Additionally, it is important to account for the sugar and carbohydrates of other foods and beverages that are consumed in the same day as consuming chocolate, as excessive sugar and carbohydrates can lead to adverse health effects in diabetics.
Checking blood sugar regularly and monitoring dietary intake is also important when consuming any type of food.
Should You Eat Candy To Treat Low Blood Sugar
While it may not be the healthiest low snack, treating any low blood sugar with fast-acting sugar can be helpful.
Some candies that contain sugar are very fast-acting. However, some others have higher fat content and are slower to digest and take longer to impact blood sugars, so they may not be appropriate to treat severe hypoglycemia quickly enough.
Another con of eating candy to treat low blood sugars is that it can react quickly and if you eat too much, it may cause higher blood sugars .
Make sure to consult your diabetes care team about any concerns or questions relating to candy and treating low blood sugars.

Because sugar alcohols are hard for the body to digest, the effect on blood sugar levels is less than standard sugar. When counting carbohydrates for products made with sugar alcohols, subtract half of the grams of sugar alcohol listed on the food label from the total grams of carbohydrate.
Remember that because sugar alcohols are harder for your body to digest, eating too many sugar alcohols may cause digestive complaints like gas, cramping and diarrhea.
Now lets practice using the sample food label shown here:
- Locate the total carbohydrate in one serving. You will see that the total carbohydrate is 29 grams.
- The amount of sugar alcohol is 18 grams per serving.
- Calculate half the grams of sugar alcohol .
- Subtract only half of the grams of sugar alcohol from the total carbohydrate Count this product as 20 grams of carbohydrate .
When counting carbohydrates, include half of the sugar from the sugar alcohol.

Whole Wheat Fruit Cake
Cakes are loved by all and if made with fresh healthy ingredients, they can be enjoyed in small portions by even diabetics. The key is to use whole wheat or oats or quinoa as the base. Adding milk, curd and/or eggs to this gives the cake a good amount of protein. Additionally fruits and nuts can be added for dietary fibre. Stevia can be used as a sweetener if really needed. Vanilla essence and plain cocoa powder dont affect sugar levels so their addition to the cake will make it a great dessert without affecting your sugar levels.
What Can A Diabetic Eat To Satisfy A Sweet Craving
If someone living with diabetes is craving something sweet, they can choose from a variety of options that are lower in carbohydrates and provide essential nutrients. Some ideas include a small piece of dark chocolate, frozen berries with Greek yogurt and a sprinkle of cinnamon and a no-sugar added smoothie.
Furthermore, light and fluffy angel food cake topped with fresh berries or an apple dipped in a tablespoon of peanut butter also provide a sweet treat without too many carbohydrates.
For those who want something a bit more indulgent, low-sugar alternatives include sugar-free ice cream, sugar-free chocolate pudding or yogurt mixed with sugar-free Jell-O. In addition, sugar-free gelatin topped with freshly cut fruit or a sugar-free popsicle can also do the trick.
Finally, a piece of graham cracker crust-less cheesecake topped with frozen yogurt, or a warm bowl of oatmeal made with almond milk and a sprinkle of cinnamon and nutmeg provide a nutritious and delicious alternative to satisfy a sweet craving.

How Are Sugar Alcohols Used
Sugar alcohols are not usually used in home cooking or in packets at the coffee counter, but they can be found in many sugar free foods including chewing gum, candy, ice cream, and fruit spreads. They are also often used as a sweetener in toothpaste, mouthwash, and cough drops.
Products labelled diet, sugar-free, or no sugar added can also have sugar alcohols in the ingredients. If a product has sugar alcohols, you will see Sugar Alcohol listed under Total Carbohydrates on the Nutrition Facts label. You can then scan the ingredient list to see which sugar alcohols were added.
Common sugar alcohols that you may find are xylitol, erythritol, sorbitol, and maltitol .
Q: What Are Some Misunderstandings That Surround Sugar
A: There are several, including:
- Sugar-free means unlimited. Sugar-free candies and other treats may still contain carbohydrates. In addition, some sugar-free candy contains significant calories and is high in saturated or trans fats. Pay attention to serving sizes, strictly avoid trans fats and limit saturated fat to 6 percent of total calories per day. For a 2,000 calorie per day diet, this would be about 13 grams.
- Sugar-free means healthy. Fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains are examples of healthy foods. Candy doesnt count as healthy, even if it is sugar-free. If you eat a lot of candy and arent ready to cut back, however, switching to sugar-free candy may help you better control your carbohydrate intake. The long-term goal, though, is to cut down on all candy.
- It is only for people with diabetes. Those who have diabetes can eat sugar as part of their overall carbohydrate budget. Both kinds of candy can increase blood sugars, especially if portion and carbohydrate content are not considered. In addition, people with or without diabetes may choose sugar-free candy if they are trying to lower calories or decrease sugar intake.

People with T1D can actually eat sugar. They can eat what anyone else eats.
Diabetic candy is made for people who have type 2 diabetes. For people who are able to manage their diabetes through diet and exercise .
People with T1D cant manage or reverse their disease with diet and exercise. They need to take insulin when they eat.
Whether its an apple or a bag of cotton candy, they need to calculate carbs and inject insulin.
No one should be eating excessive amounts of sweets or other junk foods. But having treats is fine for people with T1D, just as it is for people who dont have T1.
What Can A Diabetic Eat For Dessert
Thankfully, having diabetes doesnt mean that you have to give up dessert. Instead, you might just need to make a few small changes to ensure that the dessert you are eating is diabetes-friendly.
This could include making some swaps, lowering portion sizes, or enjoying desserts that are generally going to be better for you. You can easily satisfy your sweet cravings without your blood sugar levels getting out of control.
Many people will automatically assume that dessert is going to be completely off-limits due to the fact that they are mostly made of sugar, but it is the total number of carbohydrates in your dessert that matters more than the sugar content.
