Many people believe that if you have diabetes, desserts are off-limits. But having diabetes doesn’t have to mean deprivation not if you take the right approach. Small amounts of sweets can be included in a healthy diet, even if you have diabetes. But be aware that most of the calories in cakes, pies, and cookies come from carbohydrates and fat . As a nutritionist and certified diabetes care and education specialist, Im sharing my strategies for enjoying dessert while reducing carbohydrate and fat intake.

If you are planning on eating dessert, be sure to keep within your carb budget by eating those sweets instead of other starch, fruit, or milk in your diet I recommend eating the dessert with your meal, rather than on its own. If you’ve had several days of high glucose readings, it’s probably not the best time to have dessert. Use caution when choosing low-fat or fat-free desserts: they often have more total carbohydrates. And on the occasions when you do choose to eat dessert, be careful to limit sweets to one serving per day.

Many of the ingredients used to make desserts can be healthy, and in the right combinations, can make delicious low-carb desserts. Especially during the holiday season, apples, cranberries, pumpkin, pecans, sweet potatoes, and yogurt can be the secret to enjoying a wonderful dessert. Artificial sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners are synthetic substitutes for sugar. Examples include:

Natural sweeteners impact blood sugar just like other sugar sweeteners.

One exception to this rule is stevia, which the Food and Drug Administration recognizes as a food additive. Stevia is an extract that comes from the plant Stevia rebaudiana. Stevia can be added to desserts made at home.

Some products, such as soft drinks, have started to add stevia. Stevia is significantly sweeter than sugar and does not increase blood sugar levels. Brand name products that manufacture stevia include Truvia and Pure Via.

There is less clinical research on newer sweeteners such as these, so long-term effects are still being determined.

In fact, research has shown that starches like potatoes and white bread affect bloodglucose levels much like sugar — causing sometimes dangerous spikes in blood sugar. Carbohydrates found in most vegetables or whole grains don’t affect blood sugar as much. Counting carbs and choosing the healthiest of them is more important than eliminating sugar altogether. A little sweet treat is OK. If you’re at a wedding, for instance, you can have a small slice of cake — very small. Just substitute it for another starchy carb you might eat, like a small potato or a piece of bread. If you really have a sweet tooth, choose desserts, candy, and sodas made with sugar substitutes. Many artificial sweeteners have no carbs or calories, so you don’t need to count them in your meal plan. Others have carbohydrates that are absorbed into the blood more slowly than table sugar, so they don’t pose a threat to your blood sugar levels.

But once you come off sugar and sweeteners for a few weeks, your body and taste buds will adapt, and you wonât need or crave as much sweetness. Fruits and other natural foods will taste sweeter and more satisfying.

Sugar Alcohols are a type of carbohydrate, and they can raise blood sugar. As youll notice in the Nutrition Facts label to the right, sugar-free foods that contain sugar alcohols are not carbohydrate- or calorie-free!However, sugar alcohols are processed by the body in a different way than other carbohydrates, and some may raise your blood sugar by a little while others may not increase it at all. For example, erythritol is a type of sugar alcohol that may not increase your blood sugar. For this reason, it has become very popular as an ingredient in low-carb keto foods. Erythritol can even be found in some stores and can be used for home cooking, so you may also see it as an ingredient in low-carb dessert recipes.

Next time you have a hankering for sugar, reach into the fruit basket instead of the cookie jar. Beyond its sweet flavor, fruit provides a cocktail of nutrients without much fat, sodium, or cholesterol.

Fruit does have carbohydrates, such as the simple sugar fructose. So, youll still need to fit natures bounty into your meal plan. Start by choosing whole fruit more often than juice. The skin and flesh contain fiber, which fills you up, reduces your risk for , and helps control your blood glucose.

Then, learn proper portion sizes. Each of the following contains 15 grams of carbohydrates:

  • One small apple or orange, or a very small banana

  • 1/2 grapefruit

  • 3/4-cup blueberries, blackberries, or pineapple

  • 1 cup raspberries or melon

  • 1 1/4 cup whole strawberries

A few simple steps can turn fruit into an even more satisfying dessert. For instance:

  • Freeze a banana, then blend it with a half-cup of plain nonfat yogurt to make soft-serve.

  • Layer berries with yogurt and whole-grain cereal. Top with a few dark-chocolate chips.

Types Of Sugar In Food

When you have diabetes, your body is either not able to use insulin correctly or not able to make any or enough insulin. Some people with diabetes experience both of these issues.

Problems with insulin can cause sugar to build up in your blood since insulin is responsible for helping sugar move from the blood and into the bodys cells.

Foods that contain carbohydrates raise blood sugar. Carbohydrates need to be regulated when you have elevated blood sugar levels or diabetes to help you manage your blood sugar.

On nutrition labels, the term carbohydrates includes sugars, complex carbohydrates, and fiber. In desserts and many other products like salad dressings, breakfast cereals, and yogurts, a number of ingredients can be added to enhance sweetness.

While some foods, such as fruits and vegetables, naturally contain sugars, many processed foods and desserts have some type of sugar added to them. Many food labels will not list sugar as a key ingredient. Instead, they will list the ingredient as one or more of the following:

  • dextrose
  • glucose
  • maltodextrin

These sugar sources are carbohydrates and will raise your blood sugar. They can be found in many food products including cookies, sweetened cereals, marinara sauce, flavored oatmeals, cakes, chips, pies, puddings, yogurt, sports drinks, premade smoothies, candy, ice cream, and other desserts and sweets.

Can Diabetics Eat Chocolate

Whether you are newly diagnosed or you havent paid any attention to your diabetes educator in the past, I am here for you. For many people, chocolate is a guilty pleasure and its one more thing you dont want to have to AVOID.

As a general rule, diabetics can eat chocolate, but if you have diabetes, you should aim to eat chocolate in moderation. Chocolate will affect your blood sugar levels, which is why it is important to not eat it in large quantities. Dark chocolate is a better choice for diabetics.

Once again, I recommend reading your food labels, as some chocolate products contain a significant amount of fat, as well as a significant amount of sugar.

Something to note about chocolate is that it can potentially improve insulin response and blood sugar due to the presence of flavanols.

Flavenols are potential anti-cancer agents. They display anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-microbial effects, and they may protect the liver.

Most of the chocolate that people eat will only contain very small amount of flavanols and very high amounts of sugar, but dark chocolate has more flavanols than milk or white chocolate.

In fact, dark chocolate is noted to be one of the top 10 sources of flavenols if you are doing Internet searches.

You can still have chocolate as a diabetic, but you should always be mindful of your intake of carbs. Lower-carbohydrate options are available when it comes to chocolate treats.
