Heat Treat Flour Steps

1 Minute EDIBLE COOKIE DOUGH!ð?ª 3 EASY Ways! Small Batch Edible Cookie Dough Recipe

While you can skip this step if you want, a lot of information is out there about the possibility of e-coli being found in flour. Therefore, it is a good idea to heat your flour to 160 degrees in order to kill any possible bacteria found in it before you eat it.

This is called heat treating it. And here is how you do it:

Heat treat the flour:

  • Spread flour out onto a rimmed baking sheet.
  • Bake in preheated oven for about 7 minutes.
  • Check flour to make sure the temperature registers 160 degrees on an instant read thermometer.
  • Let the flour cool completely
  • Transfer to an airtight container.

If I am planning on making more than one batch, or different flavors of edible cookie dough, I will make a bunch of flour at a time, and then just scoop out the amount I need.

Keep in mind, you do not want the flour to turn brown. So pay attention so it is not ruined.

Do I Need To Chill The Cookie Dough

Chilling the cookie dough is optional for this recipe.

Chilling cookie dough is a hot topic among bakers. Some say that chilling ensures that cookie dough doesnt spread so much during baking and helps the flavor develop better. So, if thick and soft chocolate chip cookies are your thing, then definitely chill the cookie dough for a few hours or overnight.

Usually, I dont bother and bake the cookies right away. If I were to put a bowl with chocolate chip cookie dough in the fridge to chill, thered soon be no dough left because little and big hubby hands would surely find their way into said bowl and empty it clean. Yes, my family LOVES cookie dough.

How To Make Edible Cookie Dough [Without Brown Sugar]

Can you make chocolate chip cookies without brown sugar? Yes! My easy cookie recipe is made with basic ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry.

  • Salted butter: I usually use salted butter for the chocolate chip cookie recipe, but unsalted butter + 1/4 tsp fine sea salt will work just as fine. You can also omit the salt if preferred.
  • Granulated sugar or caster sugar
  • Egg: Use a large egg, not medium or jumbo . If you live in the UK or Europe, use medium eggs.
  • All-purpose flour: Unbleached all-purpose flour is best for chocolate chip cookies without brown sugar. You can also opt for bread flour if you like extra chewy cookies. I dont recommend cake flour as the cookies will spread too much.
  • Baking soda gives the cookies a nice rise and soft texture. Baking powder works as well, but makes the cookies more cakey.
  • Vanilla extract balances out the other flavors and creates a rich, bakery-style aroma.
  • Chocolate chips: I used semi sweet chocolate chips, which you can swap for chopped chocolate or chocolate chunks. Using top-quality chocolate makes all the difference and creates the best chocolate flavor.

Most cookie dough recipes out there is inclusive of brown sugar, it may seem highly unlikely to have a recipe that looks and tastes great without it. However, I can tell by simply replacing the amount of brown sugar with an equal amount of white sugar, youll still have the same great tasting edible dough you can imagine.

  • How To Make Brown Sugar

    Edible Cookie Dough Recipe

If youve run out of brown sugar but have molasses, you can easily make your own brown sugar.

Simply mix 1 cup / 240 g / 8 oz white sugar with 1 tablespoon molasses for light brown sugar. For dark brown sugar, combine 1 cup / 240 g / 8 oz white sugar with 2 tablespoons molasses.

Light, medium, or dark molasses and treacle will all work fine for making homemade brown sugar. Blackstrap molasses imparts a bitter-sweet flavor, that I find too strong for cookies.

    • Place the softened butter with the white and brown sugar in a large bowl.
    • Mix sugar and butter with a hand mixer for about 2 to 3 minutes until creamy.

Tip: To avoid smelling the sugar grains in your mouth, you must beat the mixture until the white and brown sugar begins to dissolve in the butter.

    • Add milk and vanilla extract and stir again for 2 minutes until the mixture turns pale and more light and fluffy.

    Pro Tips For This Recipe

    • Make sure to let the flour cool before adding it to the batter, as the heat can make the batter melty.
    • Even though this recipe is not for baking, you should still measure your flour accurately. Adding too much flour to the recipe is the most common mistake that will make the dough crumbly. The best and easiest way to measure flour is by using a scale. If you dont have one, fluff the flour with a spoon, sprinkle it into your measuring cup, and use a knife to level it off. If you scoop the flour straight from the bag, you overpack the measuring cup.
    • If the dough is crumbly, you can add an extra splash of milk to balance out the extra flour.
    • Feel free to add more add-ins or toppings to the cookie dough, such as sprinkles, crushed cookies, ground cinnamon, cocoa powder, mini M& Ms, and more.
    • If you do not want to heat-treat the flour in the oven, you can do so in the microwave. Place flour in a microwave-safe dish and microwave in 30-second intervals for a minute or until the flour reaches 165F. Between each interval, stir the flour to break up any hot spots.
    • To make it easier to transfer the flour from the sheet pan to the mixing bowl, you can line the sheet pan with parchment paper, leaving a bit of an overhang.

What You Need To Make This Recipe

Flour you can use any flour. I use all-purpose flour, but you can use gluten-free flour as well.

Butter I always suggest using unsalted butter as you can control the amount of salt added to the mixture. If you only have salted butter, skip the added salt.

Brown sugar using brown sugar adds a ton of flavor to the dough. Feel free to use light, regular, or dark brown sugar. If you do not have brown sugar, see my post on how to make brown sugar or if it has hardened, see my how to soften brown sugar guide.

Vanilla extract since this recipe is not cooked, I recommend using real vanilla extract for the best flavor.

Milk as this recipe does not contain eggs, the milk keeps the dough from being dry.

Chocolate chips miniature chocolate chips are the best as you can have bites of chocolate with each spoonful. You can use milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or even white chocolate chips if you do not want to use semi-sweet chocolate chips.

Why Is Brown Sugar Used In Cookie Dough

    Edible Cookie Dough Recipe

Brown sugar is commonly used in traditional cookie dough recipes not only for sweetness but also because it adds both moisture and flavor better than white sugar alone. This is because brown sugar is made by mixing white sugar and molasses. The molasses adds a deeper flavor to your dough, and packs in moisture too.

If you want to make delicious edible cookie dough without brown sugar you have two options:

    • The best option: Use white sugar but also add in a little molasses to replicate the flavor and moisture of using brown sugar.
    • Alternative option: If you simply do not like brown sugar and with to avoid it, use white sugar, or a sugar substitute instead.

    {EDIBLE} Eggless Cookie Dough Recipe

Being wrong is somewhat foreign to me. Just ask John.e! Ha! He will quickly agree that Im always right! So, in the rare instance that I am wrong, its hard for me to admit it. But, in this case, Ill take the hit. Not only are these cookies easy to make and fun too! theyre also very good. I love the balance of the peppermint extract in comparison to the vanilla.

Some of you might argue that there is no such thing as too much peppermint, and I would tend to agree with you. However, Dear Reader, I think our way of thinking might not be that popular. Oftentimes, I will get comments from people who have tried one of my peppermint-flavoured recipes stating that the peppermint was too strong. So, in this case, Ive kept the peppermint flavour at the forefront, but lessened it a tad with vanilla extract.

Are you a full-on, die-hard peppermint fan? If you are, by all means, omit the vanilla extract entirely and substitute it with more peppermint extract. You do you while I try to appeal to and appease the masses. In the end, well all be happy! Now, lets get on with it!
