Whats The Difference Between Strip Wax And Hot Wax

How to Make Sugar Wax at Home | Beauty with Susan Yara

Strip wax is the wax applied with a spatula, then a strip is smoothed over and pulled off. This kind of wax is excellent in areas with vellus hair – like legs. Hot wax is a bit like candle wax in that it sets hard, it doesnt stay sticky like strip wax. Once hard, the wax is pulled off. No strips are used. It grips the hair, but not the skin. Hot wax is perfect for areas with terminal hair – like bikini lines, or more sensitive areas, like the face. It is more expensive than strip wax, but feels a lot more comfortable!

Were going to be talking about pubes in case youre a prude and get offended easily. So nows your chance to click away if discussing pubic hair is too much for you. Moving on, I made it very clear in my epilator brazilian post that I dont like hair unless its on my head. And I dont like too much there either. I especially dont care for pubic hair. Though I have to admit that Ive been letting it go untamed for longer than usual. Well not quite. Ive been taking it all off once per season and cutting it low with clippers in between. With the exception of prep for Summer funtivities. Sometimes Im just too busy lazy. But in reality I dont look forward to the removal process. It hurts like hell whether I go to a professional or do it myself. Even after years. Dont let anyone tell you it doesnt. Theyre lying.

A wax heater is not necessary. You simply warm the sugar wax in the microwave for 10 seconds at a time until you reach the desired temperature. Dont let it get too hot as youll burn yourself. Plus the wax strips wont stick well. Yes youll need fabric strips to remove the hair. The sugar mixture works similar to conventional wax in this sense. I buy the Moom Hair Removal Kit which comes with 18 washable, reusable strips and 4 wooden applicators. The strips can also be cut down to size.

Waxing is a great way to remove hair from your bikini area, but waxing can be uncomfortable and expensive at a salon. Waxing your bikini line at home is definitely an option! Clean and exfoliate the area first, then find a comfy place where you can perform the waxing. Apply warmed hard wax to the area, working in small sections. Follow up with a soothing aloe vera gel and gently exfoliate the area to keep ingrown hairs at bay.

Here’s What You Need To Know If You’re Considering Getting Sugared Instead Of Waxed

The ripping-off part feels about the same, but before that ripping off part, something ungodly happens.

The technician has to spread the sugar out onto your pubic hair.

I tried to make funny faces for the camera, but eventually I forgot it was there and just did what I always do when I’m in pain: say nonsense words and begin sweating profusely and/or whimpering.

When we were done I felt like I’d been through a war.

But I was also completely hairless in a way that I never really am when I get my bikini area regularly waxed.

Plus, the salon itself was so clean and sterile feeling, not like a lot of those waxing dungeons you stumble into from time to time.

Brazilian Waxing Step 5 Application Of The Wax

When applying wax, start with the least sensitive areas of your body the first time.

Many celebrities recommend starting at the waist and moving down, but beauticians in Brazil start with the thigh and move up the body for good reasons.

The front, back, and outer thighs are not overly sensitive, making them great starting positions to get a feel for the hair removal sensation while youre working on your technique.

The process itself is pretty straightforward. Start by applying wax with the popsicle stick, against the direction of your hair growth.

For example, if your hair points down your thigh, apply the wax in an upward motion. Use enough to cover an area of roughly one inch by three inches, with about the same thickness as peanut butter spread on bread. If youre using soft wax, then quickly apply the cloth strips to the back of the wax so they adhere. Remember, fabric strips are not necessary for hard wax.

Now, hurry up and wait. The wax needs to cool and set. The wax container will tell you how long this will take, but most practitioners wait for 30 to 60 seconds or until the wax resists being pulled.

Hard wax applications are ready when tapping them with your finger produces a noise that sounds like youre tapping plastic.

Once the wax is hard, peel up one corner until you get a good grip between your thumb and fingers.

After youve determined the correct direction to use, place your other hand at the opposite end of the waxed area and pull your skin taught.

Diy Sugar Wax Recipe For Smooth Skin

By Christine Ruggeri, CHHC

Most of us start doing a little more grooming before heading to the beach or outdoors, along with when the weather gets colder and skin tends to get more irritated. The problem is, the idea of hot wax treatment is painful, and razor burn is embarrassing and stings. Dont worry though theres another way to deal with unwanted hair: sugar wax.

Have you heard of sugar wax, or sugaring? While eating sugar seems to get all the heat these days, sugaring to remove hair has been used by Egyptian and Greek women for centuries.

Like other types of wax, sugar wax is applied to the skin and then removed, taking body hair along with it. You can also use it on your face.

How does it work? Lets dive in and discuss how you can make your very own sugar wax recipe at home to get your skin feeling silky smooth.

Is There Anything I Should Do To Prepare For My Sugaring Session

Yes! For the best results, please exfoliate the area 2-3 times per week. We sell soap and a mitt which provides better exfoliation then store-bought luffas. Additionally, please moisturize the treatment area between treatments. This will help the hair grow back in such a way that the sugar can easily grasp and remove the hair for a better experience.

Your Bikini Line May Produce Less Hair

A solo encounter with a wax strip isnt going to get your follicles to give up the ghost, but if youre a fully paid up member of the long-term waxing club, you could notice your growth getting thinner naturally anyway.

“The result of your wax is a long lasting hair-free result,” Keri confirms. “It will not cause damage to the skin or surrounding areas, but your hair may over the years decide to give up and grow back finer.”

Brazilian Waxing Step 2 Gathering The Required Supplies

When doing bikini wax at home, you need the right supplies.

Lets start with wax. You can choose either soft or hard wax.

Hard wax is preferable because once its in place it will grab every hair, and you can rip the wax off simply by grabbing the edge of the wax and yanking.

Softer wax can work well also, but youll need to purchase cloth strips to attach to the waxed areas in order to create a pulling surface.

You will also need to buy popsicle sticks to use with either type of wax.

Here are some examples of hard wax products.

Your Skin Down There May Increase In Temperature

“It is recommended that a bikini wax is performed with the use of a professional hot or film wax, which is specifically formulated to effectively grip the hair in this area,” Keri notes.

As a result, the temperature of your vulva goes up during a treatment, and you might even find that you get a tad sweaty at the time. Dont sweat it, though – it wont have a negative impact on your result, and the skin should cool down quickly enough once the procedure is finished. Phew.

Does Honey And Sugar Remove Hair

Honey and sugar hair-removal wax, often referred to as body sugaring, is a safe and inexpensive way to remove body hair. Place 1 cup granulated white sugar and 1/4 cup honey in a enamel or glass saucepan.

Why does my sugar wax get hard?

If your sugar wax consistently comes out too hard, you’re overcooking it. And don’t let your sugar wax cool in the metal pot you cooked it in, or it will overcook because it keeps cooking even after you take it off the burner.

Can I make sugar wax without lemon juice?

Put the lemon juice and water in a small pan on the stove. You can make sugar wax without lemon, but I recommend including it.

How do you heat up sugar wax?

Store the wax in the refrigerator. It will keep for at least six months. When you are ready to use again, warm it up in the microwave and check every 30 seconds until it is warm and syrupy again. Add water if the wax comes out a bit too hard and reheat until it is syrupy.

Your Skin Down There May Lose All Its Dead Skin Cells

Not only is the skin softer because of the lack of hair after a wax, the waxing itself is a bonus exfoliating treatment for the area. Who knew?

Exfoliation – or the removal of dead skin cells from the surface of the skin – is a natural side-effect of the waxing process,” explains Keri, adding that this is actually beneficial in the renewal process.

So, if youve noticed that the skin down there actually looks better after youve been waxed, this could be the reason why

Honey and lemon juice can be combined to make a natural solution for hair removal. Together, honey and lemon juice form a sort of wax that can be applied to the skin and lifted away to remove hair from the root. While you can buy honey- or sugar-based waxes, this mixture can be made at home inexpensively.

  • How Do I Prevent Ingrown Hairs

Some people do seem to be more susceptible to ingrown hairs, but I do think there are several things you can do to greatly reduce or even prevent them entirely.

The first thing I would recommend is exfoliation! I personally think the best way to exfoliate is to body brush daily. I sell a range of Hydrea body brushes and exfoliation mitts, and can explain how to use them during your treatment. If you prefer a manual scrub – dont go too overboard with it, two or three times a week should work well. Do be careful of which products you use, there are some pretty scratchy scrubs out there which in certain areas can do more harm than good! I do sell some excellent scrubs from Wild Sage + Co, and Tamaras Sugar which you can purchase in my treatment room.

Its good to remember to keep your skin clean – especially before and after your hair removal treatment. And make sure your skin can breathe! Tight, restrictive clothing, and synthetic materials all really dont help. Keep an eye to see if there are any areas where you get ingrowns more frequently. Its often where clothing rubs against the skin – knicker lines, shins if you wear leggings or skinny jean etc.

I will talk more about ingrown hairs at your appointment. Apologies in advance if you cant shut me up!

Can I Keep My Knickers On

If you are having standard or high bikini line on you can leave them on, or I can give you some disposable pants to keep your own safe from wax / sugar paste and the pre and post treatment products. If you are having a g-string, brazilian or hollywood you will need to take your knickers off. They will only get in the way and make my job rather tricky! Bikini lines are probably one of my most popular treatments, I do several daily so its just normal for me! I know it can be a bit anxiety inducing, but do remember that Im waxing and sugaring bikini lines all the time, so I wont be phased in the slightest. I do use a towel so if you are feeling a bit worried we can cover any parts that arent being worked on.

Though sugar-based wax recipes are more common, you can also make sugaring wax using the honey chilling in your pantry. Good thing too, because honey is known to be an antimicrobial fantastic for skin conditions like acne, rosacea, eczema.

Ive Experienced Itchy Bumps On My Eyebrows Lip And/or Face After Waxing Will I Experience The Same Reactions With Sugaring

If you have ever experienced itchy bumps after receiving an eyebrow, lip or facial wax you are more than likely experiencing a histamine reaction. Histamine reactions also tend to occur when men wax their chest and stomach areas. This reaction can also happen with sugar however, you can reduce the reaction by taking an over the counter antihistamine 30 minutes prior to your treatment and applying cold compresses to the area for a couple of hours after the treatment. These bumps are NOT ingrown hairs.

Brazilian Waxing Step 1 Length Matters Trim The Desired Area

Like any great artist, you must first prepare your canvas, and that primarily involves the length of your pubic hair. Waxing the wrong length of hair can be excruciatingly painful. If your hair is too short, the wax may not pull out all of the hairs and can leave others just partially removed. That can lead to infections. If your hair is too long, it may not properly align in the wax that can result in extra pain during removal and require multiple pulls. Not fun.

Pubic hair should be roughly a quarter of an inch long to get the best results with a Brazilian wax. If you have shaved your pubic hair previously, start allowing the hair to grow out a week before the waxing. If you dont shave, start measuring and trimming a few days before the waxing. However, you approach the task, make sure all hairs are roughly a quarter of an inch long.
