Cancer Cells Feed On Sugar
Cancer cells have been long known to have a sweet tooth, using vast amounts of glucose for energy and for building blocks for cell replication. Now, a study by a team of researchers at Johns Hopkins and elsewhere shows that lymph gland cancer cells called B cells can use glutamine in the absence of glucose for cell replication and survival, particularly under low-oxygen conditions, which are common in tumors.
Writing in the Jan. 4, 2012, edition of Cell Metabolism, Anne Le, M.D., and a team of investigators collaborating with the Johns Hopkins Brain Science Institute, say the finding is critical for developing innovative cancer therapies because it offers proof of concept evidence that curbing the growth of B cell cancers can be accomplished by inhibiting a glutamine enzyme called glutaminase.
Le notes that although little is known about glutamines role in the growth of B cell cancer, the amino acid circulates in the blood at the highest level among the 20 amino acids that do so.
The tricarboxylic acid cycle is classically regarded as a pathway for glucose oxidation. However, the experiments by Le and the team show that B cells oxidize glutamine when glucose is absent.
The study also found that when oxygen is scarce, there is enhanced conversion of glutamine to glutathione, an important agent for controlling the accumulation of oxygen-containing chemically reactive molecules that cause damage to normal cells.

Choose complex carbohydrates instead of sweets and sugar sweetened drinks.

- Examples of complex carbohydrates include fruits and vegetables and whole-grain breads, cereals, rice, and pastas. Beans such as kidney, pinto, and black beans are all excellent sources of protein and complex carbohydrates.
Eat consistently and regularly to keep blood sugar level stable.
- Eat small meals every 2-3 hours including a source of lean protein, complex carbohydrate, and healthy fat.

Where Does The Idea That Cancer Is Addicted To Sugar Come From
About 90 years ago, a German scientist named Otto Warburg noticed that tumor cells in a dish tended to consume more glucose than non-dividing normal tissues. He also noticed that although the cancer cells were consuming massive amounts of glucose, they werent taking advantage of the most efficient method of harvesting energy from that glucose, which is to essentially burn it using oxygen in the mitochondria. Instead, they converted the glucose to lactate, leaving much of the energy untapped. This has come to be known as the Warburg effect or Warburg metabolism.
Warburg assumed that cancer cells must have a defect in their mitochondria, because why else would they resort to this inefficient method of obtaining energy? But we now know that Warburg was wrong. Tumor cells possess functional mitochondria and rely on them for energy in some situations.

Glutam Prevents Cancer Cells From Metabolizing Glutamine

L-Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body. Your body needs it for ensuring nitrogen balance, maintaining gut integrity, and keeping your immune system strong.
Unfortunately glutamine also is avidly used by cancer cells in many ways. It is metabolized for fuel. In fact, one reason cancer can grow when you are on a no sugar, low carb diet is because it will burn glutamine in place of glucose sugar to make the energy it needs.
Glutamine also supplies nitrogen to cancer cells so that they can function correctly, and in general, promotes the growth of cancer cells. Even more importantly, it unfortunately helps cancer cells thwart efforts to destroy them.
There are three primary actions using glutamine that protect cancer cells and enable them to grow and thrive.
First, glutamine stimulates production of glutathione in cancer cells. Glutathione is a major antioxidant enzyme. You want to have glutathione, lots of it, in healthy cells. However glutathione protects cancer cells from free radical damage. Many types of chemotherapy kill cancer cells by causing free radical damage the DNA in cancer cells.
When cells have plentiful glutamine, they can make enough glutathione to prevent destruction.
Cancer cells deal with this in two primary ways. They pump out of the cell as much lactic acid as they can. And they metabolize glutamine. When glutamine is metabolized, ammonia is produced. Researchers have discovered that ammonia will neutralize acid buildup.

What Are The Causes Of Cancer
Excess body fat also produces other substances that contribute to the development or growth of certain cancer types. Fat cells produce estrogen, which can fuel breast and endometrial cancers. Fat cells produce other growth factors and cause inflammation that can coax the development and progression of cancer.
Metabolic Syndrome & Breast Cancer
Metabolic syndrome is a syndrome marked by the presence of usually three or more of a group of factors that are linked to increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes-also called insulin resistance syndrome.3
If we are not engaging in vigorous physical activity, excess calories lead to excess body weight that is essentially comprised of excess fat tissue. It is this fat tissue that contributes to inflammation and sets the stage by creating a metabolic environment conducive for a host of conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, to occur in.
Glucose feeds every cell in the body and is especially essential for brain function. However, when carbohydrate intake is in excess of what the body needs, it can lead to hyperinsulinemia This can serve as an indirect link to skewed carbohydrate metabolism, metabolic syndrome, obesity, and an increased cancer risk.4

Sugar & The Western Diet
Additionally, the dietary pattern that most often goes hand-in-hand with increased refined sugar intake is associated with the Western so-called unhealthy diet and includes red or processed meats, refined grains, sweets, and high-fat dairy products, all of which have been associated with increased cancer risk.
Conversely, a prudent and healthy diet pattern which includes higher intake of vegetables, fruits, fish, poultry, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products has been shown to decrease cancer risk. In specific regard to breast cancer, the evidence has been less consistent, with some reports supporting the prudent dietary pattern as being inversely associated with risk of breast cancer while others found no association. However, dietary fat, alcohol, and processed and red meat intakes have more consistently been attributed to an increased risk of breast cancer.5
Furthermore , when consuming sugar and empty calories takes the place of more nutritious and cancer-fighting foods, we deprive ourselves of the opportunity to optimize our bodies and change the scenery that is developing or already in place.
Therefore, instead of focusing on what feeds cancer, lets invert our lens to view what enhances an internal environment supportive to health.
Choose The Right Carbs
I recently wrote a piece for Fitness Magazine about carbs and cancer. I share my thoughts on a new study that suggests swapping out fast carbs for slow carbs could help lower cancer risk. The researchers discovered that regularly drinking sugar-sweetened beverages was linked to a 3 times higher risk of developing prostate cancer. Eating plenty of slow carbs such as vegetables, beans and whole grains seemed to lower breast cancer risk by 67 percent.

A 2020 Success Story The Uk Governments Obesity Strategy
Were delighted that the sugar tax , which came into effect in April 2018, has been successful in removing a huge amount of sugar from fizzy drinks and our diets. This alongside other measures announced in the UK Governments 2020 obesity strategy should help to prevent millions of cases of overweight and obesity, and cancers linked to excess weight in the future, by reducing the amount of sugar the nation consumes.
But the Government hasnt made much progress in its plan to reduce the amount of sugar in the types of foods that are very popular with children. Four years into the programme, industry has failed to meet the voluntary targets set by Government, showing that a voluntary approach just isnt effective. This is also true for front-of-pack nutrition labelling where we want to see a consistent and mandatory approach.
Its also essential that reducing free sugars in our diets alongside other public health considerations be put at the forefront of the UK Governments upcoming trade deal negotiations in 2020 and beyond.

Flying Under The Radar
Our study raises questions about the sensitivity of these scans, Patti says. Perhaps cancer cells can live off fats floating in the blood rather than making them all out of glucose, particularly in the case of obese or diabetic patients whose blood lipid concentrations can be higher than normal.
Could this allow cancer cells to fly under the radar, leading to false negatives?
Because of the glucose hypothesis, scientists have devoted a lot of attention to developing cancer therapies that inhibit either glucose metabolism or lipid synthesis. But if the assumption is wrong, would blocking glucose metabolism slow cell growth? Wouldnt the cells just scavenge lipids from their surroundings?
To test this possibility, the scientists tried dosing their cell lines with 2DG, a glucose molecule with a hydrogen atom substituted for a hydroxyl group that gets stuck in the pathway that breaks down glucose. They found that if they spiked the cultures with lipids as well, 2DG was much less effective in slowing the growth of cancer cells.
This finding challenges the reasoning behind one strategy for killing cancer cells, Patti says. 2DG is now in clinical trials.
If the findings suggest that cancer cells might not respond as hoped to drugs that block the glucose uptake, it also suggests blocking lipid uptake might be effective.
