Do Tums Have Sugar In Them

Could Antacid Medications Affect Blood Sugar Control In Diabetes

What Does Sugar Actually Do To Your Body?

Posted by Dr. Sue Pedersen | Aug 8, 2017 | Diabetes, Research

Proton pump inhibitors are medications commonly prescribed to treat heartburn and peptic ulcer disease . Since PPIs work by blocking acid secretion in the stomach, and since a higher acid content of food lowers its glycemic index, I was asked whether PPIs could increase the effective glycemic index of a meal and thus have a negative impact on diabetes control.

It turns out that PPIs have a very interesting relationship with pancreatic function and blood sugars.

Firstly, as PPIs work by blocking acid secretion in the stomach, PPIs do increase the pH in the stomach and very high up in the small intestine . However, there is little to no effect on pH in the majority of the small intestine, where carbohydrates are absorbed.

PPIs raise serum levels of a hormone called gastrin, which is responsible for stimulating acid secretion in the stomach. This is because the gastrin secreting cells in the stomach sense that acid production is low, so more gastrin gets cranked out in an attempt to increase acid secretion.

Interestingly, gastrin stimulates glucose-induced insulin secretion from the beta cells of the pancreas. There is also some experimental evidence that gastrin may stimulate the production of new beta cells. Further, PPIs slow emptying of the stomach, because less acid in the stomach means that it takes longer for solid food to be broken down and be ready to pass into the small intestine.

Resistant Starch Rice Pudding

Sugar Cravings How To Stop Them | Metha Khane Ka Dil Kyun Karta Hai | Sweet Craving After Meal

My low sugar, egg-free, bone broth infused version of rice pudding makes a great breakfast option. It is also a great food for soothing ulcers.

It is full of easy to digest low-FODMAP carbs if you stick to a half-cup cup serving.

I cooked the rice in bone broth in my Instant Pot.

You cant taste the broth in the final dish, but it adds protein, amino acids and gut-healing gelatin. If you make the rice with water, you can add a scoop of collagen powder.

To make it creamier, blend half of the rice pudding and add it to the other half. This makes it thick and creamy without eggs to thicken.

The best kind of rice to use is basmati or jasmine rice as theyre the easiest to digest. If you tolerate brown rice you can use that too, but the extra fiber may be tougher to break down if you have weak digestion.

This can be customized with your favorite flavors or toppings, and eaten hot or cold. I prefer it hot.

Makes 4 half-cup portions.

2 cups of rice cooked in bone broth

1 cup of non-dairy milk

1 Tablespoon of honey

Vanilla, cinnamon and salt

Optional add ins:

1-2 Tablespoons of collagen, lemon or orange zest, goji berries, chia seeds, sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds, chai spices, sliced banana, nut butter, butter, spirulina

How to

Cook the rice in water or bone broth. I used an Instant Pot to cook my rice. The rule of thumb is 2 parts liquid to 1 part rice. One cup of uncooked rice should yield 3 cups of cooked rice.

Add honey.

I keep it simple with red and green cabbage and carrots as my base.

Green cabbage is the traditional or classic slaw base, though I love adding some red cabbage for the peppery flavor and pretty color it adds.

Both are smooth-leaved, dense, and crunchy, which is key if you are making your coleslaw ahead, and want it to maintain that crunch.

To find the best cabbage, consider these tips:

Functional Medicine View Of Reflux

Lumpy Tums: 1857

Theres an alternate theory in functional medicine, that it is low stomach acid and NOT high stomach acid that causes GERD and reflux.

The idea is that the LES gets loose when stomach acid secretion are lower than normal. And that a sufficient level of acid is what signals the LES to stay tightly shut.

One of the most common causes of low stomach acid is a bacterial infection of the stomach called h pylori.

Regular testing at your doctors office is not sensitive enough to catch this inflammatory and acid lowering infection. I use a highly sensitive functional lab test with clients that identify h pylori along with any other gut infections that it can lead to. The test I use is called the GI Map.

Stomach acid kills and protects you from pathogens like parasites as well as bacterial and fungal overgrowth. When acid is low it leaves the gut vulnerable to infections.

Tums Vs Other Calcium Supplements

TUMS provide a high amount of calcium per pill, at 40 percent, meaning fewer pills are needed in the long run. This can help keep supplement costs down. Additionally, in order for the calcium in TUMS to be absorbed properly, they should be consumed with food, which can make remembering to take them easier.

What Is In Coleslaw Dressing

I love a good dressing made with buttermilk, but I also love a little vinegar and lemon juice. Some might say it is overkill and you dont need all 3. But after testing this and several other recipes, this is my favorite combo for a nice tangy dressing that isnt too puckery or vinegar-y!

  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice

Summer Picnic And Bbq Sides

Summer is here, BBQ season is in full swing, and those tasty side dishes of sweet, vine ripened fresh fruits, savory grilled veggies, and crunchy, refreshing salads like this coleslaw are gracing our tables.

Dont let pesky heartburn stop you from enjoying your summer favorites.

If you are anything like me, you cant get enough of all the bold, fresh flavors of summer. But sometimes they just dont sit well. And you can end up with that unpleasant burning feeling of acid reflux and heartburn.

Even when you eat healthy, fresh foods, you can get heartburn. It isnt about how good the foods are for you, it is how they react with your esophagus and stomach.

Heartburn is often caused by the foods we eat, as some foods can relax the lower esophageal sphincter, which allows food to escape into the esophagus and cause heartburn.

Since food can be one of the causes of heartburn, many would advise you avoid those heartburn triggering foods.

But that would be such a bummer.

Especially since so many of them are so good: Pineapple, lemons, mint, citrus juices, onions, chocolate, coffee, soda, and more! Half of my favorite summer foods have heartburn triggering ingredients.

Instead of skipping delicious, but heartburn inducing foods, I have looked for other solutions. And I am excited to share them with you!

My Solution To Gerd And Reflux

Can I Give My Dog Tums? Safe Tummy Ache Solution?

Acid blocking or lowering medications, like antacids or proton pump inhibitors , will make the problem worse if the issue is actually low stomach acid.

If the low acid is driven by h pylori, then eradicating the infection will help it bounce back. I use this powerful tea with my clients to eradicate h pylori.

Other reason for low stomach acid is stress or deficiencies of nutrients such as zinc.

With low stomach acid its best to eat multiple smaller meal and food that is well cooked as well as blended or pureed meals. These foods have already started breaking down before they are eaten and are much easier for a weak digestive system to handle.
