Blood sugar levels increase when we eat foods containing carbohydrates.

When digested, carbohydrates are broken down into sugar and absorbed into the bloodstream, leading to an increase in blood sugar levels.

When our blood sugar levels rise, our body releases insulin.

But small amounts of insulin are also released before any sugar enters the bloodstream. This response is known as cephalic phase insulin release. It is triggered by the sight, smell, and taste of food, as well as chewing and swallowing .

If blood sugar levels drop too low, our livers release stored sugar to stabilize it. This happens when we fast for prolonged periods, like overnight.

    The concern people however have about this aspartame is that one of the products of its breakdown is methanol.     When it comes to diabetes and weight loss, one of the first steps many people take is to cut empty calories from their diets. This often includes sugar.

    Aspartame has both pros and cons when considering diabetes and obesity. First, the Mayo Clinic states that, in general, artificial sweeteners may be beneficial for those with diabetes. Still, this doesnt necessarily mean that aspartame is the best sweetener of choice you should ask your doctor first.

    Sweeteners may also help weight loss efforts, but this is usually only the case if you consume a lot of sugar-containing products before trying to lose weight. Switching from sugary products to those containing artificial sweeteners may also reduce the risk of cavities and tooth decay.

    According to a 2014 PLoS One study , rats that were fed aspartame had lower body masses overall. One caveat to the results was that these same rats also had more gut bacteria as well as increased blood sugar. This increase in blood glucose was also linked to insulin resistance.

    The research is far from conclusive about how aspartame and other nonnutritive sweeteners affect these diseases and others.

    Americans obsession with soda is waning, but not everyone is sipping with their health in mind.

    According to a study published in November 2017 in Obesity, about 61 percent of children and 50 percent of adults reported drinking soda daily in a 20132014 survey, compared with nearly 80 percent and 62 percent, respectively, in a 20032004 survey. Overall, 18,600 children age 2 to 19 and 27,652 adults 20 years old and older were surveyed over the total time period.

    Drinking soda can be a detriment to human health. According to a study published in September 2019 in JAMA Internal Medicine, drinking soda is associated with a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, colorectal cancer, and all causes of death.

Findings from a study published in the journal Appetite suggested that drinking soda can trigger sweet cravings by dulling your sensitivity to sweet tastes, sparking a vicious cycle of eating foods and drinks with added sugar.

    Soda has no nutritional value, and therefore, there is no nutritional benefit to having it, says Kelly Kennedy, RD, staff nutritionist for Everyday Health. Just one can of cola contains over 9 teaspoons of sugar thats 1½ times more than the American Heart Association recommends a woman have in an entire day.
