Vodka and beer are different types of beverages that are most consumed around the world. Vodka is a harder drink when compared to beer. Vodka is distilled from grains and contains about 40 percent alcohol.

It is distilled more and more until there is no flavor remaining in the liquor. Moreover, vodka is not barreled or aged. One of the peculiarities of vodka is that it is tasteless and odorless.

One of the main differences that can be seen between vodka and beer is that the former is a distilled beverage and the latter one is fermented. When comparing the calorie content, vodka has fewer calories than beer.

This Vodka From Bakon Is Going To Be A Hard Pass

Now for all you Bloody Mary fans out there, this might not sound too terrible, but the second-worst vodka on our list that you should probably avoid at all costs is the bacon-flavored spirit from Bakon Vodka. Yes, bacon-flavored vodka. We love a good piece of bacon, dont get us wrong, but in vodka form? Absolutely not.

As noted by the Bakon Vodka website, the spirit is ideally used in drinks like a Bloody Mary or a Caesar but if you can just use your classic vodka for those specific drinks, why get a special flavored vodka that you cant use for all your cocktails? Its not like youre going to want to sip on bacon-flavored vodka, let alone use it in a classic mixed drink like a Cosmopolitan .

If you think that were being dramatic, we can guarantee you that we arent. LA Weekly put Bakon Vodka on their list of the five worst vodkas out there, so were pretty confident that you should save your money and skip out on this bottle.

How Is Flavored Vodka Made

Pin on Low carb/keto

Flavored vodka begins as a clear, neutral spirit distilled from starchy foods like wheat, corn, rye or potatoes. After its distilled, natural and manufactured flavorings are added to the spirit to make flavored vodka. Some flavored vodka brands start with neutral grain spirits and then add flavorings.

  • Any distilled spirit starts with taking food with complex sugarssuch as grain or potatoes.
  • The distiller starts with a mash of grain and water thats heated in a big vat.
  • Then yeast is added. The yeast eats the sugar in the starchy mix and turns it into alcohol, in an ancient process called fermentation. This fermented liquid, which is like a strong beer, has a relatively low alcohol content of about 15 to 16 percent.
  • To create vodka, this beer is distilled to create more alcohol.
  • The fermented liquid is added to a still and heated. Since alcohol is lighter than water, it turns to steam that collects inside the still and the water evaporates. Once the still cools down, the liquid thats left is high proof of alcohol or vodka. This spirit can be distilled several times, and with each repetition, it gets purer. When the distiller is satisfied with the spirits purity, the appropriate flavor is added.
  • Boutique vodka makers will use a pot still, often made with copper, to produce a spirit with a softer texture. Flavorings like spices can be added in the pot still to create a flavored vodka.

Your Guide To The Carbs And Calories In Vodka

Whether it’s made from potatoes, corn or rye, vodka’s calorie content depends on the alcohol level rather than the main ingredient. But even though vodka doesn’t contain any carbs, it does contain calories.

Tip

You generally won’t see calorie info listed on a bottle of vodka, but you will see the alcohol percentage, as well as the proof. Doubling the alcohol percentage gives you the proof number. A vodka labeled 40 percent alcohol, for example, is 80 proof. Each gram of pure alcohol contains 7 calories, so the higher the percentage of alcohol in your favorite brand of vodka, the higher the proof and the more calories you’ll get.

Keep this handy fact in mind whenever you’re trying to figure out how many calories are in a type of alcohol.

The ingredients in vodka are mainly water, vodka and sometimes flavorings. There are small amounts of potassium, phosphorus and sodium in vodka, but it is not a significant source of any nutrient and provides 0 percent of your Daily Value for them.

The calories in vodka come from alcohol, not carbs, and there are no carbs in vodka. Every gram of pure alcohol contains 7 calories, according to the USDA. The more alcohol your vodka contains, the more calories it will have.

Review: Ciroc Summer Watermelon Vodka

The Sommelier Update: November 2012

Ciroc has been making a play for the tropical fruit vodka market, with an enjoyable Mango Vodka and now a re-release of its Summer Watermelon vodka. Calling it a Limited Edition maybe adds a little cachet to what could otherwise be just another flavored vodka, but it does mean that when its gone, its gone for this summer, at least.

Is it worth going after, though? It isnt cheap, and if your price is higher than your ABV, the product had better be good. The first thing to say is that it needs chilling. Tasted at room temperature when the room temperature was in the 80s brought out the bad side of watermelon, where instead of tasting and smelling fresh and sweet, it gave off the unmistakable and unpleasant aroma of over-ripe rind.

Chilling the vodka, even for just a few minutes with an ice cube, revealed a different story. On the nose it became what it should be: the delicately-sweet smell of a freshly-sliced watermelon. There were hints of vanilla and even strawberry, no doubt from the sugar content of the watermelon with which the five-times-distilled vodka is infused. There are unspecified artificial flavors added too.

Ciroc Summer Watermelon Vodka wasnt a good match for the bitterness of tonic, but it did pair well with a bubbly soda and a squeeze of lime. It should also add a touch of class and pizazz to a vodka sangria or a fruit punch.

70 proof.

This neutral flavor profile allows Ciroc to be infused with natural fruit extracts without the taste conflicting with any existing grape flavors.

How Many Calories Are In A Shot Of Vodka

5 x Easy Vodka Cocktails (part 1)

Vodka is considered a lower-calorie libation compared to wine or beer. The more concentrated your vodka is , the more calories it contains. The proof is a number that refers to the percent of alcohol in the liquor.

You can figure out the percent by dividing the proof in half. For example, 100 proof is 50 percent alcohol, while 80 proof is 40 percent alcohol.

The higher the proof, the higher the calorie count . For a 1.5-ounce shot of vodka, the number of calories are as follows:

  • 70 proof vodka: 85 calories
  • 80 proof vodka: 96 calories
  • 90 proof vodka: 110 calories
  • 100 proof vodka: 124 calories

Alcohol is not a carbohydrate. The calories in vodka come only from the alcohol itself. Pure alcohol contains roughly 7 calories per gram. For reference, carbohydrates and protein both contain about 4 calories per gram, while fat contains about 9 calories per gram.

This means that alcohol is nearly twice as fattening as carbohydrates or protein and only slightly less fattening than fat.

The calorie content is generally the same between different brands of vodka that are that same proof. Kettle One, Smirnoff, Grey Goose, Skyy, and Absolut vodka, for example, are all 80 proof vodkas and each contain 96 calories per 1.5-ounce shot, or 69 calories per ounce.

If You Drink Vodka Every Night Your Blood Pressure May Decrease

According to the CDC, approximately 29 percent of Americans have high blood pressure, which is about 75 million people. Unfortunately, having high blood pressure can make you much more likely to be at risk for heart disease and stroke, which are super common causes of death in the United States.

On the bright side, if you drink vodka every night, it just might improve your blood pressure, according to Laura Krebs-Holm, a registered dietitian. Moderate alcohol consumption has been linked to improved blood pressure due to its ability to relax blood vessels and help with increasing new blood vessel formation, she revealed to The List. That said, those with high blood pressure should avoid drinking alcohol, vodka or otherwise, as this can lead to an increase in your already high blood pressure. Instead, to lower your blood pressure, do the same things you would do to keep your cholesterol down: mind your diet, get plenty of exercise, and quit smoking. Ready to give up cigarettes? Heres what happens to your body when you quit smoking.

What Is The Main Ingredient In Vodka

Water is the main ingredient in most brands of vodka. After all, vodka comes from the old Slavic word voda, which translates to little water. The typical ABV for vodka is 40%, making the water content around 60% and resulting in an 80-proof spirit. While the United States ABV minimum is 40%, the European Unions is 37.5%, allowing the water content to be slightly higher. Either way, itll stay liquid in your freezer.

While some brands of vodka, like Devil Spring and Balkan 176°, have an ABV of up to 88%, theyre intended to be diluted by the consumer before ingesting, like Everclear and other rectified spirits.

Now that you know all about this unassuming spirit, its time to mix up one of these choice cocktails.

How Is Ciroc Vodka If Its Made From Grapes

    Absolut Orient Apple Vodka 70cl

According to the legal definition of vodka, vodka can be made from any agricultural product that contains starch or sugar.

Traditionally, wheat, rye, and potatoes were used to make vodka but in recent years, base ingredients like milk, apples, and grapes have been used by distillers.

Initially, Cirocs grapes are fermented and they turn into wine. Since Ciroc takes the next step and distills the wine to a higher proof before diluting it in water, it becomes vodka.

Moreover, Ciroc possesses the required traits of vodka as per the ATF and the European Union, which are a neutral flavor profile and a minimum of 80 proof.
