My Long History With Sonic Slushies

Sonic Sour Patch Kids Slush Float

Well, you have come to the right spot for your answer because I used to work at Sonic. In fact, it was my very first job as a teenager.

I was one of their carhops and I also ran the fountain as we used to call it.

So I was the one responsible for making those slushies and any other drink or ice cream ordered. I actually have very fond memories of working there .

Of course, that was way back when I was happy to partake in all of the sugary sweet drinks.

Since it has been a very hot minute since I have worked there, I took the time to re-look at their menu and see what theyve got to offer to try today.

Not surprisingly, a lot of it is the same . I will delve deeper into this later so, read on!

Sonic Slushes Are Gluten

Sonic Slushes may have quite a bit of sugar in them, but fortunately all of the standard flavors on the Sonic menu are gluten-free. This is important information to those diagnosed with celiac disease or people dealing with gluten intolerance. Even though the basic Slushes don’t contain gluten, you need to be careful if you start adding in unusual syrups and toppings, or if special edition Slushes containing different ingredients are released.

Sonic has conveniently where you can find out all about their gluten-free menu options, as well as other possible allergy considerations for everything on the menu. Note that the allergen information does clearly state: “Blended/mixed drinks and frozen desserts may come in contact with milk, egg, soy, wheat, gluten, peanuts, pecans, and tree nuts.” So, if you do have a serious gluten allergy, you might still want to be careful about what you order.

Different Flavors Are Available

You can get different flavors of sonic slush out there today and you are free to pick any that is ok with you.

The company had been adding new flavors over time, making the product even more exciting. You can opt for blue raspberry or any other flavor.

There are several other fruity flavors available too for anyone interested in this product. As sonic slush dissolves in the mouth, the flavor tends to get even stronger, amplifying the tartness and sweetness.

Sonic’s Chili May Sit Around For A While Before Making It To Your Car

It’s not just the vanilla ice cream that could potentially be older than you might like. Turns out, the Sonic chili a necessary ingredient for Sonic’s famous coney dogs sits around for a while, too. According to a Men’s Health article that looked at Reddit responses to a thread on things to avoid at popular fast-food chains, one Redditor said that the Sonic chili, very much like the vanilla ice cream mix, “comes in a bag” and then “gets warmed up in a metal tub, and then sits for 10 hours until we run out and replace it.” And while no one expects fast-food chili to be made to order , most diners would probably agree that 10 hours is a little too long to let the chili set before refreshing the batch .

As unappetizing as that may be, the Sonic chili coney has remained popular enough to become its own Slim Jim flavor.

Milkshakes Could Be A Major Concern If You Have A Food Allergy

Sonic New Sour Patch Kids Slush Float Review

Probably more concerning than the onions are the Sonic milkshakes if you have a peanut allergy. The former Sonic employee found fault not just with onion cross-contamination in the dressing station but said, “the same goes for peanuts with the shakes.” This could be a much larger deal. While Popular Science’s take on the growing sensitivity to onions and other allium plants details how exposure to those plants can result in unpleasant gastrointestinal symptoms, anyone familiar with a peanut allergy knows that exposure even in the smallest amounts can sometimes lead to death.

Health.com calls peanut allergies the most widespread of all food allergies in the United States and one quoted doctor even calls the growth of peanut allergies an “epidemic,” affecting 1 in 70 children. But, unfortunately, even if you did experience some sort of allergic reaction to peanuts at Sonic, it’s unlikely that you could take any legal action. That’s because Sonic posts on its website that “blended/mixed drinks and frozen desserts may come in contact with milk, egg, soy, wheat, gluten, peanuts, and tree nuts” which essentially puts the chain in the clear.

When you order your drink, remember to tell them not to add any sweetener to your tea or coffee.

It’s a lot safer to add the sugar substitute yourself. That way, you can control how sweet it is and whether it is real sugar or low-carb sweetener.

Make Your Own Cherry Limeade

There’s nothing wrong with the occasional serving of diet cherry limeade, but don’t make it a regular part of your diet, and stick to one of the mini or small sizes. Anything larger can fill you up, leaving you less hungry for other more nutritious foods. You might also consider making your own cherry limeade so you can control what ingredients you use.

Rather than using low-sugar flavored syrup like Sonic does, puree fresh pitted cherries with fresh lime juice, lime zest and ice to make a similar concoction that doesn’t contain any added sugar but that also supplies vitamin C, fiber and potassium.

If You’re In A Hurry Don’t Order The Boneless Wings

Skinny Pineapple Cream Slush

One of the largest appeals of fast food is that it’s, well, fast. So, if you’re in a tremendous hurry the next time you stop by Sonic, one of the chain’s skating carhops recommends on Quora that you skip the boneless chicken wings. Why? She notes, “There things that will take longer to cook. Wings usually take 69 minutes to cook depending on the thickness of the wings, the number being cooked at once, and the fryer temperature. They aren’t sold with consistency enough precook any. So 9 times out of 10, if you come after 6 p.m. you’ll be waiting for wings.”

On one hand, this could be a good thing. If this Sonic employee is correct and Sonic’s boneless wings aren’t pre-cooked, you’re guaranteed fresh wings every single time. However, if you’re in a hurry, this could be enough to turn you off, as you could be waiting for your order up to 10 minutes or longer after you place said order.

Carhops On Skates Will Bring Your Sonic Slush To Your Car

If you have never been been to a Sonic Drive-In, you might not realize that skating carhops still exist. Carhops at many Sonic locations bring your Slushes and other food and drinks to the car while on roller skates or rollerblades. You’ll be amazed how much they can carry on a tray while on skates. When you are done eating, you can summon the carhop to come back and dispose of your trash, too. Another little known fact: Carhops can get you refills on drinks at many Sonic locations for 50 cents. However, some locations will even give you Slush refills at that price, if it’s a slow time and you ask nicely. It’s worth a shot!

Skating carhops must complete Sonic’s skating training program before they start skating at work, and the carhops also have to buy their own skates, so that may be why you don’t see them skating at every location.

Sonic Diet Cherry Limeade Nutrition

Diet cherry limeade is just one of the many beverage options at Sonic, a fast-food chain restaurant that serves burgers and shakes. Being a diet drink makes it lower in sugar and calories than the traditional cherry lemonade, but that doesn’t mean it’s healthy.

Video of the Day

While the occasional diet cherry limeade can be an acceptable part of your diet, this beverage doesn’t deserve a prominent place in your healthy eating plan because it’s so low in nutrients.

Look Elsewhere For Nutrients

Though the diet cherry limeade at Sonic is low in calories and sugar, that doesn’t make it a nutritious beverage. The only nutrient the beverage supplies is vitamin C, according to FastFoodNutrition.org. This vitamin helps make collagen, or connective tissue that helps support blood vessel walls, according to Harvard Health Publishing.

The mini and small sizes deliver 4 percent of your daily vitamin C requirements, while the medium supplies 8 percent. The large size supplies 10 percent of your daily vitamin C needs, and the Route 44 size delivers 15 percent. The diet cherry limeade doesn’t supply any vitamin A, iron or calcium, however.

While it might not taste salty, the diet cherry limeade does contain sodium ââ¬â 10 milligrams in a small, 15 milligrams in the medium, 25 milligrams for a large and 30 milligrams in the Route 44 size.

Healthy adults should limit daily sodium intake to no more than 2,300 milligrams according to the American Heart Association. If you have high blood pressure or other heart disease risk factors, that number drops to 1,500 milligrams.

It’s Impossible To Get A Sugar

If you’re looking for a sugar-free Slush option, we’ve got bad news for you: All Sonic Slushes contain sugar because the base itself consists of sugar and ice. This means even without any add-ins or toppings, your Slush will pack a really sweet punch. In fact, a small, plain Slush contains 48 grams of sugar and 180 calories. Bump that all the way up to a Route 44 and it’s 145 grams of sugar and 540 calories.

Unfortunately, some people don’t realize that the base itself has sugar in it, though that information is certainly printed on their menu. In some instances, Sonic staff don’t even seem to know about the sugar-laden base, according to a Reddit thread on the topic. So if you’re watching your sugar intake, don’t think that ordering a Diet Coke Sonic Slush means you’ll be avoiding sugar altogether. You aren’t. And they are definitely not keto- or diabetic-friendly, either. Given the high amounts of sugar, Slushes should probably be an occasional indulgence rather than a daily treat.

Sonic Takes Them Very Seriously

In 2018, a Colorado-based craft beer brewery by the name of Wiley Roots Brewing Company unveiled a new and super popular beer series called Slush. They didn’t try to hide the fact that they were spoofing Sonic’s famous frozen drinks. In fact, they playfully nodded to their inspiration by parodying Sonic commercials. In 2019, according to Brewbound, they decided to take the series to the next level, adding some lighthearted Sonic-style branding on the cans and rolling out even more Sonic-esque flavors, including a brew called Double Cherry Limeade Slush.

However, if you’ve ever wondered how serious Sonic is about safeguarding their Slush brand, consider your curiosity relieved. They’re super-serious, which was made abundantly clear in April 2019 when the company’s law firm sent Wiley Roots a cease-and-desist letter over their “Slush” sour beer series. As a result, Wiley Roots had to stop using the Double Delta logo and Route 44 marks in their can branding and remove all references to Sonic.

They were good sports about it, though. “We completely understand where coming from,” Wiley Roots co-owner Kyle Carbaugh said in a news release, per the Greeley Tribune. “What initially started off as an inside joke at the brewery gained far more momentum than we had ever anticipated. Once we saw the trending popularity of this series, we figured it would only be a matter of time before the inside joke grew beyond its means and would require rebranding.”
