You may have heard that sugar feeds cancer and to avoid all foods and beverages that contain sugar, but is this really necessary? Following such a restriction can significantly reduce your intake of foods that are rich in nutrients that have been shown to fight cancer such as fruits and whole grains. In addition, eating enough calories during cancer treatment can be difficult. Adding new, restrictive dietary changes can often lead to more stress which can also compromise your immune system. The following information is what the research shows in relation to sugar and cancer and how to incorporate healthy eating based on these findings.
Myth : You Can Be Too Old For Cancer Treatment
FACT: There is no age limit for cancer treatment. Decisions about cancer treatment for older adults should take into consideration the same factors as for younger adults and should not focus on the persons age alone. Many older patients benefit as much as younger patients from treatment. However, some older adults may have other illnesses that limit the use of specific treatments.

Association Of Sugary Drink Intake With Pancreatic Cancer
A recent study did a similar analysis using questionnaire-based data from 477,199 participants included in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition cohort study, most of which were women with a mean age of 51 years. During a follow up of 11.6 years, 865 pancreatic cancers were reported.
Unlike the previous study, this study found that total sweet beverage consumption may not be associated with pancreatic cancer risk. The study also found that juice and nectar consumption might be associated with a slight decrease in pancreatic cancer risk. Pancreatic cancer patients may have to avoid very high intake of drinks with concentrated sugar.
Will Eating Sugar Make My Cancer Worse
No. Although research has shown that cancer cells consume more sugar than normal cells, no studies have shown that eating sugar will make your cancer worse or that, if you stop eating sugar, your cancer will shrink or disappear. However, a high-sugar diet may contribute to excess weight gain, and obesity is associated with an increased risk of developing several types of cancer. Fact: Sugar Does Not Make Cancer Cells Grow Faster
The truth is that all cells in our body use a form of simple sugar, called glucose, for energy. We get sugar from foods that contain carbohydrates, protein and fat. Even though sugar does not feed cancer cells it is a good idea to limit the amount of simple sugars you eat.
Too much sugar can lead to high insulin levels. Insulin can tell healthy cells to grow which is good. Our bodies need insulin to function, but it is unhealthy if we make too much insulin or if our body develops resistance to it. It is in this way that cancer risk is increased in diabetics, not from sugar itself.
Does this mean we need to stop eating all sugar? NO! Remember, the normal cells in our body still need some sugar for energy. If we eat less sugar, our bodies will compensate by making sugar from other sources.
Like the other cells in our body, cancer cells need fuel. Our bodies are carefully tuned to maintain blood sugar levels at a constant level. In the complete absence of sugar, body cells use other fuels like ketones. There is no evidence that cancer cells prefer one form of fuel over the other. So, there is no way to starve a tumor by eating less sugar.
It is important to eat a well-balanced diet including good carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and fiber, and yes, sugar. This helps maintain your energy level and avoid other health issues while dealing with your cancer diagnosis.

Where Did The Idea That Sugar Causes Cancer Come From
When we eat food containing carbohydrates, including foods that contain sugar, our body breaks it down into glucose. That glucose then fuels our cells to make the energy we need to survive. This process is called metabolism.
Normal cells and cancer cells both use glucose for energy. Scientists know that cancer cells metabolize glucose faster than normal cells. Its part of something called the Warburg Effect, named after the German scientist Otto Warburg, who studied cancer in the early 20th century.
The Warburg Effect even has a practical application in diagnosing cancer. In an imaging test called a positron emission tomography scan, doctors inject radioactive glucose into the bloodstream. Since cancer cells metabolize glucose at a faster rate, the PET scan lights up the location of cancer cells and tumors in your body. Doctors can use the image to find cancer or evaluate how well cancer treatments are working.
Today, some scientists are working on treatments to destroy cancer cells by starving them of glucose. They hope to alter genes that affect the cancer cells metabolism or develop drugs that would target cancer cells metabolism.

The Connection Between Weight Gain And Cancer
While there is no evidence to directly link sugar consumption and cancer growth, you should still be mindful of how much sugar you eat or drink.
Added sugar has no nutritional value. The empty calories are stored as fat and cause weight gain.
Research has found those who are overweight or obese, have an increased risk of cancer including pancreatic, breast, liver and kidney cancer. Obesity also increases your risks of developing other chronic illnesses that could make cancer treatment more difficult.

Artificial Sweeteners Weight Gain And Cancer
Zero-calorie artificial sweeteners, such as NutraSweet, Equal and Splenda, arent healthy replacements for refined sugars. Research has not found a direct correlation between artificial sweeteners and cancer in humans, however there is a link between weight gain and artificial sweeteners.
Study results find consuming artificial sweeteners to be associated with:

Sugar and sugar-sweetened foods and drinks have been increasingly scrutinized for their role in promoting cancer development and cancer spread.
In an editorial in Nutrition, Dr. Undurti N. Das highlighted the fact that fructose, a constituent of table sugar, or sucrose, changes cell metabolism and raises the activity of cancer-promoting proteins.
In an accompanying article, Ashutosh Kumar, Ph.D., and his colleagues from the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research in Hyderabad in India echo this sentiment.
But Kumar also highlights that here are many published reports with conflicting results regarding the role of carbohydrates and cancer prevalence.
For instance, several studies have found an increased of endometrial cancer in women who consumed high levels of sucrose, yet when it comes to other types of cancer, the data are less clear.
While some study failed to find a clear-cut association.
As mentioned earlier, we have previously reported on a study that revealed that sucrose increases breast cancer rates. Over half of mice fed a sucrose-rich diet developed breast cancer, while only 30 percent of mice that consumed a starch-based diet did. While a number of population studies concur with this finding , others refute such a link.
The question is, how easy is it to get away from the sweet temptation that is sugar?

Is Cancer A Death Sentence
In the United States, the likelihood of dying from cancer has dropped steadily since the 1990s. Five-year survival rates for some cancers, such as breast, prostate, and thyroid cancers, now are 90 percent or better. It is important to note, however, that these rates are based on data from large numbers of people. How long an individual cancer patient will live and whether he or she will die from the disease depend on many factors, including whether the cancer is slow or fast growing, how much the cancer has spread in the body, whether effective treatments are available, the persons overall health, and more.
