Alcohol is very energy dense, with just two medium-sized glasses of the most calorific wines analysed containing more calories than a McDonalds hamburger. Whats more, higher calorie content is linked to higher strength drinks which are the most damaging to our health. Alcohol consumption is linked to seven types of cancer, including bowel and breast cancer.
For those who drink, alcohol accounts for nearly 10% of their daily calorie intake, with around 3.4 million adults consuming an additional days worth of calories each week totalling an additional two months of food each year.
None of the 30 products examined in this study displayed sugar content on their labels information which is required for all non-alcoholic drinks. Calorie content was only displayed on 20% of the labels examined. Those wanting to know how many calories or how much sugar is in their drink, would be unable to find all the information they need on the majority of product labels.
This lack of information means that drinkers have no idea what they are consuming.

Which Wine Varieties Have The Least Calories
Wine has a reputation for being a sugary alcoholic beverage. Sugar can account for 21 to 72 added calories per serving in sweet wines and 72 to 130 added calories per serving in very sweet wines. Knowing this, the natural tendency would be to opt for the opposite.
A dry wine with dinner should help cut back on calories. Going for a dry wine is a good standard for limiting sugar consumption, but other factors contribute to the total calories in wine. A high alcohol by volume percentage can cause the calorie content to skyrocket.
There is no nutritional value to vodka: 0g sugar, carbs and fat. Vodka is pure alcohol, and yet, one shot of 80 proof vodka contains nearly 100 calories. This is because alcohol actually contains more calories per gram than sugar.
Residual sugar contains only four calories per gram, while alcohol contains seven calories per gram. So, yes. Dry wines do contain less sugar but contain more alcohol as well.
Keeping this in mind, a dry wine that has a high alcohol by volume content will nearly put the same amount of calories in your stomach as a sweet wine that has a low ABV content.

Calculating Calories In Wine
We use the following calculation from to calculate the number of grams of alcohol in a bottle or glass of wine, use this formula:
volume x alcohol x 81000
Multiplying this answer by sevenwill give you the approximate calorie content of a bottle of wine divide that number by 5 to find the amount in a 5 oz. glass.
Using this model, a standard bottle of wine at 750ml with an Alcohol by Volume of 12.5% would have approximately 525 calories. With approximately 5, 5oz servings of wine per 750ml bottle, that means there would be an estimated 105 calories per glass. We used this calculation to determine the calories in each of our sugar free wines.
Another important observation brought up by regarding residual sugar vs. calories:
a sweeter wine with low alcohol could be lower in calories than a high-alcohol dry white, because the residual sugar is a less-concentrated source of carbohydrate than alcohol, at four calories per gram.

Is There Sugar In Wine
Yes, sugar can be found in all wines. From reds to whites to cooking wine and everything in between, there is definitely some amount of sugar to be found. It is the type of wine and winemaker that will determine just how much.
Wine is made from grapes, which naturally contain sugar. To achieve the sweet nectar we call wine, these grapes must be fermented. This is a process through which cultured yeast is added and the natural sugars are broken down into alcohol. It’s a bit more complicated than that, but this is the general process. Any sugars that aren’t converted in the process are called residual sugars. These are the reason the wine you’re drinking contains some sugar, but less than if you ate the grapes it was made from. Aged wine will also have less sugar since tit has had more time for fermentation.
Depending on the desired sweetness, winemakers may also add sugar after fermentation. This is particularly true in the US, where the market for sweets is higher. This is also why there tend to be higher calories in wine made in the US.

And These Types Of Wine Have The Most Sugar
Clocking in at seven to nine percent residual sugar, its no surprise that dessert wines tend to have the highest sugar content of any wines, says Largeman-Roth.
For context, while a five-ounce glass of Chardonnay has just one gram of sugar, five ounces of Port contains around 12.
The following wines tend to have the most sugar:

Wines from other fruits, such as apples and berries, are usually named after the fruit from which they are produced, and combined with the word “wine” and are generically called fruit wine or country wine . Other than the grape varieties traditionally used for wine-making, most fruits naturally lack either sufficient fermentable sugars, proper amount of acidity, yeast amounts needed to promote or maintain fermentation, or a combination of these three materials. This is probably one of the main reasons why wine derived from grapes has historically been more prevalent by far than other types, and why specific types of fruit wines have generally been confined to the regions in which the fruits were native or introduced for other reasons.
Mead, also called honey wine, is created by fermenting honey with water, sometimes with various fruits, spices, grains, or hops.
