Want To Eat Less Sugar Try This Instead Of Quitting Cold Turkey

Nutrition pros share their top tips for cutting back on sugar the healthy way — without leaving you craving the sweet stuff.

Sugar is quite addictive, but reducing the amount of it in your diet can improve your health.

Eating more fresh foods, drinking more water and getting more exercise — these are all common goals when it comes to getting healthy. But one of the hardest habits to kick? Eating too much sugar.

Cutting down your sugar intake is a simple way to improve your diet and health overall — but it’s certainly not easy. Consuming too much sugar, especially added sugar, is linked to health risks like heart disease, fatty liver disease, high blood pressure and chronic inflammation. If you think that you’re consuming more sugar than you need and want to cut back, doing so is a smart move for your long-term health.

Health authorities like the US Office of Disease Prevention and the World Health Organization recommend that you should get no more than 10% of your daily calories from added sugar each day . Another way to look at that amount is to limit your sugar intake to no more than 6 teaspoons, or 25 grams total. You’ll want to keep track of how much sugar you actually add to your food and drinks, but also what’s in prepackaged food or food from restaurants.

Quitting sugar cold turkey can seem like the best option, but it may not work in the long run.

How Do I Get My Kids To STOP Eating So Much Sugar?

Here are three easy ways to stop eating sugar:

  • Eat fresh fruitFresh fruits are better for you than canned fruits because the processing removes all of the nutrients. Canning fruit in high fructose corn syrup coats pieces of fruit with lots of added sugar. For example, one-half cup of canned pears contains as many as 12 grams of high fructose corn syrup, whereas one-half cup of freshly sliced pears contains about 7 grams of natural sugars. Natural sources of sugar are digested slower and help you feel full for a longer time. It also helps keep your metabolism stable.
  • Opt for diet or non-soda carbonated beveragesThe healthiest beverage is, of course, water, but if you would like a better alternative to regular soda, opt for a diet option or non-soda carbonated beverage instead. Regular soda is generally a mixture of carbonated water and sweeteners, like high fructose corn syrup or sucrose, phosphoric acid and caffeine. One 12-ounce can of regular soda contains 10-11 teaspoons of sugar. Diet soda contains similar ingredients but uses sugar substitutes like aspartame, acesulfame, potassium, sucralose and stevia.
  • Sugar can lead to a number of serious health conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and high blood pressure. For these reasons and more, added sugar should be kept at a minimum whenever possible, which is easier when you eat a healthy diet based on whole foods like fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meats and whole grains.

    Sugar & Insulin Resistance

Your brain and body need glucose to survive. When your body perceives that blood sugar is getting too low, it sends you a signal that it needs fuel. You get hungry, or maybe you crave sugar because your body knows its a calorie dense and efficient way to give you a fast boost. When you eat sugar, white flour , alcohol, sodas, candy, cookies, pastries, etc, your body uses a hormone called insulin to transport the glucose to your cells for usage. When you eat too much sugar, your pancreas releases a whole lotta insulin to usher all that glucose into your cells, and blood glucose levels drop again , and your blood sugar levels drop too low, so you crave sugar again to bring the levels back up.

The problem with this cycle is that eventually, your cells stop responding properly to insulin. They already have enough glucose, so they lock the door and dont allow insulin to escort glucose into the cell. Your pancreas is overworked as it continues to churn out insulin in response to all that sugar youre eating, but now you have become insulin resistant because your cells dont want all that excess sugar. This causes your blood sugar levels to rise, setting you up for type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

“Sometimes, this works great. Maybe you hit on a recipe that hides veggies in something, and has less sugar, and makes you happy in the way that you were seeking. That’s a win,” says Scott-Dixon. However, she adds that when we know something is healthier, we tend to overeat it or justify sketchy food choices later on. Like: “Well, I had that healthier muffin, so now I can have a pizza.”

    Ease Off The Table Sugar

If you’re used to adding sweetener to your food and drinks, give yourself time to ease out of the habit, suggests Kohn. Typically start your day with two spoons of sugar or honey in your tea or coffee? Cut back to one sugar for a week, then slash it to zero a week lateror sweeten it with a slice of orange or a little milk. Same thing with the sugar you put on top of French toast or cereal, or the maple syrup doused on your pancakes. Gradually reducing the amount will make it less noticeable that you’re cutting back, and you’ll be less craving-crazed for a sugar hit.

What Is The Easiest Way To Detox From Sugar

So, how do you get rid of your sugar cravings?

Moderation, rather than elimination, is key.

    Eat sugar in moderation

    Just take my client Tree.

Tree loves to eat out with her family and that involves desserts. She never gave up on these dinners, but was still able to lose 20 pounds and flatten her stomach.

She didnt deprive herself, so she was able to enjoy her sweet treats while eating the right foods most of the time.

Most of the time, you can simply switch out your sugary treats to healthy, but tasty alternatives.

A study shows that participants ate significantly less high-sugary foods when they were given a mint with gymnemic acids from the Gymnema Sylvestre plant compared to those who were given a placebo.

A few of my own favorite sugar-replacing foods are cinnamon and mint.

    Plan your meals

The next thing is to plan your meals. You see, if you have your breakfast, snacks, lunches, and dinners planned out, it gets much harder to go for quick solutions, like a chocolate bar as a snack or a ready-made meal as dinner.

And if you eat delicious food all the time, you wont even miss sugar. Your energy levels will keep much more stable if you eat frequent, small meals and a varied diet.

    Other factors

Other factors also impact how well you stay off sugar.

Research shows that staying active throughout the day can help people reduce cravings for sugary foods. In the study, overweight people were shown to be less likely to eat sugary snacks after a brisk walk.

    Beware Of Dried Fruit

Shocking Amounts of Sugar People Eat Around The World ...

Though we’ve never met a raw fruit we didn’t love, dried and canned fruits are entirely different stories. Food manufacturers often add sugar, juice concentrates, vegetable oil, and syrups to extend their fruit’s shelf life and improve the flavor. Steer clear of these culprits to cut sugar and stay slim!

    Sugar Has Zero Nutritional Value

Thats right. No vitamins, minerals, no NOTHING. Sugar is literally plain calories. And after you have some, youll only want more because it wont make you full.

Thats why people have inadequate amounts of sugar. Because they just dont know when to stop. They think if theyre still hungry, that means they havent had enough. And again, and again, and the circle never ends.

But next time you have sugar, remember how absolutely useless it is and dont give in to the feeling of needing more of it!

Potential Signs Youre Eating Too Much Sugar

Upset stomach, irritability, and sluggishness are all possible warnings you’re overdoing it on the sweet stuff.

Sugar gets a bad rap, but the truth is that its a vital source of energy and essential to our survival. Of course, not all sugars are the same. Fructose found in fruits and vegetables and lactose in dairy-rich foods are natural sugars we dont have to be as concerned about because these foods also have fiber and calcium, for example. Added sugars, however, which are often found in processed foods, are those we could do without, and most of us consume too much of them.

According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 20202025, the average American consumes 270 calories of added sugars, or 17 teaspoons, each day.

Added sugars are anything thats added to food to make it taste sweet, and this includes natural sugars like honey and maple syrup. Even though they may be more wholesome than table sugar, its still contributing more calories but not much in the way of vitamins and minerals, says Jessica Cording, RD, a health coach in New York City and author of The Little Book of Game Changers.

Sugar is sneaky and can hide under 61 different names, according to the University of California in San Francisco. Despite your best efforts to make healthy food choices, you could be getting more sugar than you bargained for.

    It Can Cause Premature Aging

Heres a crazy fact: sugar can be more aging for the skin than a lifetime of lying in the sun.

    Thats right

Sugar can seriously speed up the aging process. This is due to a process called glycation. This chemical process happens when blood sugar levels become excessively high.

Sugar molecules circulate through the blood and bind to other components. forming substances known as protein-sugar complexes. These complexes trigger an inflammatory response, causing tissue damage and premature ageing.
