Even if you dont consider yourself a professional chef and you have never made syrup in your life, you definitely need to make this recipe because it is super easy to make, and not only that, but it wont cost you an arm and a leg to make it.

All you really need is two to three ingredients that you can find at your local grocery store or right in your own pantry. If you are feeling fancy, you can also spice it up with vanilla extract, mint, any kind of citrus flavor, or cinnamon.

No fancy equipment is required to make this syrup, which makes it even more worth it to make. You dont have to run to the store to buy a fancy, complicated machine.

All you need is a few measuring tools to measure out your water and sugar and a saucepan. Thats it!

Pantry Staples: How To Make Brown Sugar With Molasses

You never know when youll be in the middle of a delicious recipe and realize you needed just a little more brown sugar than you have! Learn how to make brown sugar in just moments with pantry staples you already have on hand! This is a great trick to have in a pinch, for sure.

But at this point, I use it all the time. Since I make water kefir with my brown sugar, we always need some on hand! We also love to use it in recipes like our wedding day apple crisp and our butterscotch pudding pie!

Since organic brown sugar is more expensive anyway (I saw a 1.5 lb bag for about $7 recently, we find this quick, 5-minute recipe helps us keep it in stock all the time.

We get the 10 lb bag of organic white sugar from Costco and I have a bottle of organic blackstrap molasses from Wholesome.

How To Make Brown Sugar With Molasses

I honestly dont even have any measurements for you! Just take your container and fill it about 2/3 of the way, maybe a little more, with white sugar. This will ensure you have the right amount. Since we are going to be mixing the brown sugar with air, it will puff up a bit!

Pour the white sugar into your bowl attachment.

Dont bother using a measuring spoon to add the molasses.

Molasses is so thick and sticky that measuring it with a spoon is already a messy process. The molasses will get stuck to the spoon, so youll take a spatula to get it out and then the spatula will be covered in molassesNah. Not worth it.

A note on color:

1. Eyeball about a teaspoon of molasses into the bowl. It should be about the size of a quarter.

2. Turn on the stand mixer at the lowest setting. If you go any higher, the sugar will start to fling out!

Youll notice the molasses separates out into these little clumps. Thats okay keep mixing!

3. Pause when it looks like the sugar is starting to integrate to lift the head. Scrape molasses off the paddle attachment and off the sides of the bowl.

4. If the color seems too light, add another quarter-sized blob of molasses and repeat the cycle.

Depending on the amount of brown sugar you are making, you may need a lot more or just a little. I added about 4 of these quarter-sized blobs in total for my container.

I highly recommend that you use the molasses substitute, but in a pinch, if you dont have molasses you can combine granulated sugar with any of the following:

  • Honey
  • Maple syrup
  • Agave nectar
  • Stir about 2 tablespoons of honey, maple syrup, or agave into 1 cup of granulated sugar.

    NOTE: These substitutes will not produce a result as close to brown sugar. The sugar will not be as dark and the flavor will not be as deep and rich. Your baked goods will be lighter in color and the results can vary based on the recipe.

    For all those times you didnt want to use refined brown sugar in a recipe, I found a solution for you! This refined sugar-free Homemade Coconut Brown Sugar produces the same exact result in baking and tastes every bit as delicious!

    You probably already know that brown sugar is made from just 2 ingredients, refined white table sugar and molasses. There is different types of brown sugar depending on the depth of the refining process but most likely the store bought stuff you find, is just white sugar plus molasses.
