Dark Chocolate Vs Milk Chocolate: Which Is Better
If theres any great debate in the world of cacao, its dark chocolate vs. milk chocolate. Most of the worlds chocolate eaters have palates attuned to the latter. To many of us, chocolate is meant to be smooth, creamy, and mouth-smackingly sweetnot the bold, bitter complexity of the naked cacao consumed by cacaos first discoverers. But dark chocolate is just way healthier, right?
So, which reigns supreme? Lets dig into the differences between dark chocolate and milk chocolate to see how each compares when it comes to taste, quality, and health benefits.
Highest Amount Of Sugar Per Serving
Please remember that the above gives an accurate value in 100g for high sugar foods in your diet. For example 100g of Candies, milk chocolate contains 51.5 g of sugar. Are Chocolate Chips Healthy
All chocolates, except white chocolate, contain flavanols from the cocoa that are linked to heart health and a lower risk of stroke and heart attacks, according to the Mayo Clinic.
However, it’s important to read labels carefully to ensure you are selecting the best quality semisweet or dark chocolates. Sugar content alone is not enough to go on, as all chocolate chips contain sugars.
Look for labeling that states the percentage of total cacao content in the chocolate. The higher the percentage, the darker the chocolate and the better it is for you.

Sugar: The Unhealthy Side Of Chocolate Milk
- Schools MUST keep chocolate milk available for children to choose at lunchtime.
- Milk is a much better choice nutritionally than sodas or juice.
- Chocolate milk has only 60 more calories than plain milk.
- Kids love it and will therefore drink more milk.
So is this new campaign justified?
What you need to know:
Few people would argue that drinking milk instead of soda pop is a bad choice. And anyone who has children knows that their attraction to sweet is like a magnetic force. So if adding some sugar and flavor is the vehicle to get children drinking milk, it makes sense that we all raise our hands for chocolate milk.
The question then becomes, how much added sugar?
Would you add over 3 teaspoons of sugar to your child’s 8 oz cup of milk?
Probably not. But that’s exactly the amount being added to kids’ chocolate milk.
We asked Karen Kafer, RD, VP Health Partnerships at National Dairy Council, about all that added sugar. She responded that in market testing conducted by the milk manufacturers, the 3 added teaspoons seemed to be the magic number that got kids to drink the most milk. She did not disagree that less sugar would be better, but added that right now that’s what manufacturers are selling because that’s what kids like.
What to do at the supermarket:
Potential Health Benefits Of Chocolate Milk
Bone health. Milk is naturally rich in calcium, an essential nutrient for your bones and teeth. In addition, most of the milk available in the U.S. and many other countries is fortified with vitamin D. This combination of nutrients makes milk a bone-health powerhouse.
U.S. dairy producers began adding vitamin D to milk in the 1930s to help eliminate rickets, a bone-weakening disease. Rickets, which at the time was common in children, is caused by vitamin D deficiency and makes bones softer and weaker than they should be.
In adults, vitamin D deficiency can lead to osteomalacia, a softening of the bones that increases the risk of fractures. Both diseases can be prevented by eating foods high in vitamin D and thats where milk, including chocolate milk, comes in.
Muscle mass and endurance. Chocolate milk is rich in protein, which helps build muscle mass. Several studies have also found that drinking chocolate milk significantly increases endurance, which helps you keep exercising longer.
As a result, chocolate milk can help you build muscle mass directly, by providing protein, and indirectly, by enabling you to exercise longer. Some evidence also suggests that it may be even more effective than sports drinks for increasing endurance and reducing post-workout exhaustion.

Chocolate Milk In Schools: Ban It Keep It Or Change It
Its time for a truce in the chocolate milk wars. A conflict over whether schools should offer flavored milk has been raging for years, pitting advocates for better school food against each other. While chocolate milks supporters insist the health benefits of milk outweigh any possible harm from extra sugar, its foes allege that chocolate milk is just like soda or candy. Meanwhile, as school funding shrinks, and costs for food, fuel and labor continue to rise, the chocolate milk battle divides advocates, just when it is most important that they join forces and work together.
To recap the battle thus far: flavored milk accounts for about 70% of the milk served in US schools. Some schools offer it for both breakfast and lunch, others only at lunch. Some schools have banned flavored milk altogether, but studies sponsored by the dairy industry show that when this happens, milk consumption overall drops about 37%.
Flavored milks foes say that such studies are biased. If only plain milk is offered, they say, children will happily drink it thus far there have been no studies produced to back up that claim. Foes of sweetened milk also link its consumption with increased obesity, but again there have been no studies done to provide support for that view. Studies of the role sweetened beverages play in obesity have focused on soda, sweetened teas, juice drinks, and sports drinks, not flavored milk.
Both sides are right and both are wrong.
But there is a middle ground.
Do You Have To Pasteurize Milk
Pasteurized milk is raw milk that has been heated to a specified temperature and time to kill pathogens that may be found in the raw milk. Pathogens are microorganism such as bacteria that make us sick. By law, all milk sold to the public must be pasteurized and packaged in a licensed dairy plant.
Which Bird Give Milk
Although milk is exclusively a mammalian production, some birds, such as pigeons, penguins and flamingos, produce a milk-like substance which provides similar benefits to their young. Both female and the male pigeons produce it in their crop, and like mammalian milk production is controlled by the hormone prolactin.
Why Is There Sugar In Milk
Many people try to avoid added sugar and for good reason.
Foods high in added sugar contribute extra calories to your diet without providing any additional nutrients. Theyre also linked to weight gain and metabolic syndrome, a condition that increases your risk of diabetes and heart disease .
However, some foods contain naturally occurring sugars.
Thats why some products, such as dairy and nondairy milks, show sugar content on their nutrition panel even if sugar isnt included as an ingredient.
These natural sugars are the main carbohydrate in milk and give it a lightly sweet taste even when drunk plain.
In cows milk and human breast milk, the sugar comes primarily from lactose, also known as milk sugar. Nondairy milks, including oat, coconut, rice, and soy milk, contain other simple sugars, such as fructose , galactose, glucose, sucrose, or maltose.
However, keep in mind that sweetened versions, including chocolate milk and flavored nondairy milks, harbor added sugar as well.
Most dairy and nondairy milks contain naturally occurring sugars like lactose. Sweetened versions provide added sugar, too.
Milks sugar content varies significantly depending on the source and how its made as some products have sugar added.
Here are the sugar levels in 1 cup of various types of milk (
Among the unsweetened nondairy varieties, rice milk packs the most sugar 13 grams while almond milk contains none at all. Cows milk is comparable to rice milk at 12 grams.

Chocolate Milk For Kids: Healthy Or Not
Is it a good idea to add sugar to milk to encourage more children to drink it?
Or is chocolate milk just another sugary beverage that will add unnecessary calories to kids diets?
If you follow health news at all, youve probably noticed this nutrition controversy getting a lot of news coverage. Heres one story.
Heres what we know:
Milk contains significant amounts of calcium and is fortified with vitamin D, important for childrens bone development and growth. Milk consumption has decreased significantly in the United States, by about 1/3 since 1968.
Chocolate milk contains added sugars and therefore more calories that can lead to more overweight and obesity. In the United States, 1/3 of children are already overweight and obese and at higher risk for chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
Calories in 1 cup milk:
1% white milk = 102
The concern with removing chocolate milk from schools is that children will drink less milk.
Whats the evidence?
I couldnt find much.
According to a study by the Centers for Disease Control , in 2006 New York City public schools began switching from whole milk to lowfat and fat free milk. The milk industry warned that student demand for milk would decrease. Although it did initially decrease, by 2009 children actually did drink more milk than in 2006.
What do you think? Should chocolate milk be served in schools? Or is it adding too many calories and sugar to childrens diets?
How Much Sugar Is In Flavored Milk
Flavored milk does have more sugar than white milk. But all milk has sugar its lactose, the naturally occurring sugar in milk.
Remember, 11 grams of sugar are in the milk before any other flavors are added, so all that sugar isnt extra.

Food Product For Humans
In many cultures, especially in the West, humans continue to consume milk beyond infancy, using the milk of other mammals as a food product. Initially, the ability to digest milk was limited to children as adults did not produce lactase, an enzyme necessary for digesting the lactose in milk. People therefore converted milk to curd, cheese and other products to reduce the levels of lactose. Thousands of years ago, a chance mutation spread in human populations in Europe that enabled the production of lactase in adulthood. This mutation allowed milk to be used as a new source of nutrition which could sustain populations when other food sources failed. Milk is processed into a variety of products such as cream, butter, yogurt, kefir, ice cream, and cheese. Modern industrial processes use milk to produce casein, whey protein, lactose, condensed milk, powdered milk, and many other food-additives and industrial products.

Is Chocolate Milk Healthy For Kids
Serving chocolate milk in school cafeterias is once again under attack, but is it really that bad for kids? Nutrition expert Joy Bauer weighs in.
Chocolate milk: To drink or not to drink? That’s the hot-button issue on the minds of school officials, parents, and nutrition experts across the country.
The debate over whether chocolate milk should be served in school cafeterias and whether it’s healthy reared its head again when the Los Angeles Unified School District announced it would ban chocolate- and strawberry-flavored milk from its schools starting this summer. Superintendent John Deasy pushed for the ban with influence from celebrity chef and food activist Jamie Oliver, who has said that flavored milk has as much sugar as a candy bar.
In April, The Washington Post reported that Fairfax County, Va., schools would reintroduce chocolate milk after they banned it last year. The new, reformulated chocolate milk is low-fat and contains less sugar than previous versions .
But the chocolate milk controversy is bigger than just school policy. Chocolate milk is higher in sugar and calories than non-flavored milk, but some kids simply refuse to drink plain milk.
So are kids better off consuming the extra sugar and calories in chocolate milk than not consuming any milk a vital source of calcium, vitamin D, and other vital nutrients at all?

Dark Chocolate Vs Milk Chocolate: The Nutrition Facts
First, some basics: It all starts with cacao beans from the cacao tree.
Cacao beans contain protein, fiber, and are a great source of minerals like iron and magnesium. Theyre also rich in powerful antioxidants, particularly flavonoids like catechin, epicatechin, and procyanidins. In fact, cacao is richer in antioxidants than most fruits and vegetables. Because of that, eating chocolate has been linked to all kinds of health benefits. Research shows associations with a lower risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, and stress relief, among other benefits.

This is where things start to get complicated. While both dark and milk chocolate contain that healthy ingredient, the percentage of it compared to all of the other stuff thats on the ingredient list is what matters. A milk chocolate bar may contain as little as 10% cacao, while a dark chocolate bar may contain up to 90%. The more cacao youre getting, the more youll reap the benefits.
Then, the other stuff: If a bar contains only 10% cacao, whats the rest of it? You guessed it: sugar and milk! In a Hersheys milk chocolate bar, for example, sugar is the first ingredient, milk is the second, and chocolate is the third. A dark chocolate bar typically has about half the sugar of milk chocolate and contains less milk. And since it has more cacao, it has more fiber, minerals and antioxidants.
Salts Minerals And Vitamins
Minerals or milk salts, are traditional names for a variety of cations and anions within bovine milk. Calcium, phosphate, magnesium, sodium, potassium, citrate, and chloride are all included and they typically occur at concentrations of 540 mM. The milk salts strongly interact with casein, most notably calcium phosphate. It is present in excess and often, much greater excess of solubility of solid calcium phosphate. In addition to calcium, milk is a good source of many other vitamins. Vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D, K, E, thiamine, niacin, biotin, riboflavin, folates, and pantothenic acid are all present in milk.
Calcium phosphate structure
For many years the most widely accepted theory of the structure of a micelle was that it was composed of spherical casein aggregates, called submicelles, that were held together by calcium phosphate linkages. However, there are two recent models of the casein micelle that refute the distinct micellular structures within the micelle.
The first theory, attributed to de Kruif and Holt, proposes that nanoclusters of calcium phosphate and the phosphopeptide fraction of beta-casein are the centerpiece to micellar structure. Specifically in this view unstructured proteins organize around the calcium phosphate, giving rise to their structure, and thus no specific structure is formed.
Some sources indicate that the trapped calcium phosphate is in the form of Ca96 whereas others say it is similar to the structure of the mineral brushite, CaHPO4·2H2O.
