Why Do People Drink Gatorade Zero

Gatorade Zero boasts its electrolyte replenishment that cannot be supplemented by plain water. Most especially for individuals who are highly physically active. But how essential are electrolytes to the body?

To facilitate important bodily functions, electrolytes are distributed through the fluid in the body and utilized as electrical energy, since these are charged ions .

These are important to control :

  • Aids in muscle contraction including the heart
  • Maintain correct body pH

Common electrolytes include calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium and chloride. Gatorade Zero contains potassium and sodium. Concentrations vary with every electrolyte water available in the market.

This contains no sugar and 2 grams of carbs. No sugar spike in Gatorade Zero, such that it contains alternative sweeteners: acesulfame potassium and sucralose which are known to have little to no effects on the blood sugar.

Sugar In Sports Drinks

Why do people from one country hate the snacks from another country ...

Skipping the soda and reaching for popular sports drinks may seem like a healthy choice, but most sports drinks are only slightly better than soda in terms of sugar and calories. A 32-ounce sports drink contains between 56 and 76 grams of sugar equal to about 14 to19 teaspoons and four to six times the recommended daily amount for kids and teenagers.

They do have less sugar than soda, but its still a significant amount, says Vanessa Curtis, MD, a pediatric endocrinologist and director of the pediatric cardio-metabolic clinic at University of Iowa Stead Family Childrens Hospital. Most sports drinks still have about two-thirds as much sugar as soda.

The same amount of a non-diet soda contains 104 to124 grams of sugar, or 26 to 31 teaspoons.

The number of teens reaching for sugary sports drinks weekly is going up, and even more so daily when it comes to kids who watch more than two hours of TV a day, according to a study posted in May 2018 in the American Academy of Pediatrics . Nearly 60 percent of high school students drink at least one sports drink each week.

Dr. Curtis says the added electrolytes that come from these sports drinks arent necessary for kids, either.

Kids dont really need the extra electrolytes if theyre eating a healthy diet, she says. If theyre running a marathon, then the drinks are fine but for one ball game or a dance recital? They dont need them.

The best alternative at the ball park or the soccer field, she says, is simply water.

Is Gatorade Bad For Kids

While Gatorade can be useful for active adults and some very active children, most kids do not need sports drinks regularly.

Sports drinks are now a household staple and are frequently handed out at sports matches. A 2018 study in Pediatrics revealed that 57% of adolescents drank a sports drink at least once in the previous week. Almost 14% drank a sports drink daily.

However, the vast majority of children do not exercise at a level of exertion or length of time that requires the performance-boosting ingredients in sports drinks.

For most children, a plain bottle of water will provide the hydration they need during a youth basketball game or high school field hockey event.

What Is In Gatorade Other Than Water

While the majority of Gatorade is simply water, the drink does contain some additional ingredients that are intended to improve its taste and nutritional value.

One of the most notable ingredients in Gatorade is sugar. Sugar is a carbohydrate that the body uses for energy. The body breaks down carbohydrates into glucose, which is then used by the muscles for energy. Consuming sugar during exercise can help to maintain blood sugar levels and delay fatigue.

Gatorade also contains electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium. These electrolytes are lost through sweat during exercise. Replacing them can help to prevent dehydration and maintain proper fluid balance in the body.

In addition to these basic ingredients, Gatorade also contains some vitamins and minerals. These include vitamins B6 and B12, which are important for energy metabolism, and magnesium, which is involved in muscle contraction. While these vitamins and minerals are present in small amounts, they can still help to improve the nutritional value of the drink.

Overall, Gatorade is a refreshing and hydrating drink that can be beneficial for athletes. The sugar and electrolytes present in the drink can help to replenish energy and fluids that are lost during exercise. Additionally, the vitamins and minerals present in Gatorade can help to improve its nutritional value.

Is Gatorade Good For You This Is When You Should Drink It According To A Nutritionist

Last month I found myself drenched in sweat, using all of my mental willpower to push through a 10K race . While I usually forgo the hydration stations during races , this race was different.

The temperature steadily climbed into the high 80s as the race went on, and the inclined course had me dripping with sweat, which was bringing on a headache. Every time I stopped at a station I fell back on my typical habit of avoiding sugary beverages, bypassing the neon-colored liquids filling half the cups in favor of plain old H20.

While this choice is typically a smart one , according to Natalie Rizzo, RD, founder of Nutrition à la Natalie, this situation turns out to be an exception to the rule.

For any activity longer than 60 minutes, youre going to want to think about a sports drink, says Rizzo. Gatorade or any sports drink was actually formulated for athletes. We think that theyre not so good for us because a lot of people drink them when their sitting at their desks or theyre not so active, and if thats the case, yes, its too much sugar. But sports drinks are actually good for athletes working out for longer than an hour or who are working out in extreme conditions like extreme heat.

My rule of thumb is generally after an hour, you want to kick in with a sports drink.

Aspartame is one of the most controversial low-calorie sweeteners used to decrease sugars in foods and drinks. This popular sweetener is widely used in packaged products like diet soda and sugar-free candy, and can typically be identified on a label as containing phenylalanine. Some studies claim aspartame is bad for your health.

Gatorade Fit is aspartame-free and sweetened with purified stevia leaf extract, a healthier alternative to aspartame. The original Gatorade also steers clear of aspartame and instead uses both sucrose and dextrose to achieve its sweet flavor.

Gatorades With Less Sugar

Does Gatorade have sugar?

In response to concerns over its high sugar content, Gatorade now offers Gatorade Zero, which has no sugar and only 10 calories, and G2, which has half the sugar and about half the calories of the original. These products use the artificial sweetener sucralose and acesulfame potassium in place of sugar.

While many studies suggest that artificial sweeteners are safe for consumption in moderate amounts, other research has found potentially detrimental effects. For example, a 2017 review article concluded that artificial sweeteners may alter the gut microbiome, be associated with weight gain, and alter satiety cues.

More research needs to be done in order to validate causation. At this time, the FDA stands by the safety of the ingredient and approves its use in food.

Both of these low and no-sugar product lines provide the same electrolyte re-fueling without the added calories and can be a happy middle ground for those that want an endurance boost without all the sugar.

Are The Color Dyes In Gatorade Zero Safe

Several flavors of Gatorade Zero have artificial colors like Yellow 5, Yellow 6, and Blue 1. Research suggests that artificial colors cause hyperactivity and behavioral issues in some children. There are also concerns around possible carcinogens in artificial colors used in Gatorade Zero.

Ive made dedicated posts about each of these artificial colors before. But here are some of the specific health concerns people have:

  • Yellow 5 : A 2015 study found that Yellow 5 caused DNA damage in human white blood cells that it was exposed to. Its possible that this could lead to tumor formation if it were to happen in amounts that cant be repaired.
  • Yellow 6 : Yellow 6 often contains known carcinogenic contaminants, including benzidine and 4-amino-biphenyl. These contaminants have only been documented at low levels where it shouldnt be cause for concern, however. There were also animal trials where Yellow 6 resulted in the formation of kidney/adrenal tumorsbut this result is disputed.
  • Blue 1 : : An unpublished study on Blue 1 suggested that it may cause tumors in mice. In addition, a test-tube study found that Blue 1 inhibited nerve cell development. So the effect on unborn fetuses may be of concern.

All of these artificial colors are still being tested on animals to determine their safety. The most established problem is hyperactivity in kids. Some governments around the world have taken steps to add warnings or ban some of these dyes.
