Hummingbirds and Sugar Water Recipe and feeder care

Hummingbird feeders should be placed in partial sun. If your feeder is in the sun all day it will spoil faster. You want to put the feeder somewhere where you can see it but also somewhere that the hummingbirds feel comfortable. They dont like to be out in the open, so the partial shade of a tree or bush, or hanging from a canopy or your house is a good location.

Tips For Making Hummingbird Food

  • Use a larger 4 parts water to 1 part sugar mixture to make a bigger batch of nectar.
  • You can store the unused homemade hummingbird nectar in the refrigerator for 2 weeks.
  • Do not use honey as this can cause a fatal infection to a hummingbird’s tongue.
  • Artificial sweeteners or sugars have no nutritional value. Please don’t use them.
  • Red dyes are not necessary and some may be unhealthy.
  • Remember to clean your feeder regularly.
  • Change the nectar every 3 to 5 days and more often in hot weather.
  • NOTE: Since this hummingbird food recipe is a sugar water mixture, it can quickly ferment in the heat and sun causing bacteria and mold. You will see the nectar turn cloudy when it starts to ferment.

We have been using this nectar recipe for years and we have had many hungry birds at our feeders.

We hope your feeders will be as busy with hummingbirds enjoying this delectable treat!

Will Birds Drink Chlorinated Water

Chlorine pool water can be deadly to wild birds. Wild birds are not designed to drink and digest chlorine, which is found in both swimming pools and tap water. If they ingest too much chlorine, it will result in death from shock as well as damage to the liver, kidneys, heart and central nervous system.

Why Do Hummingbirds Not Like My Feeder

The feeders are dirty or the nectar has spoiled. The sugar in the hummingbird food can easily spoil if left out in the sun too long. Some people buy one large feeder so that they dont have to refill it as often. If necessary to accomplish this, I may not fill my feeder all the wayonly what the birds eat in 3 days.

Why Do Hummingbirds Stop Coming To Feeders

~Hummingbird food~ 4 cups water & 1 cup sugar. Bring water ...

One of the reasons that they have stopped coming to your yard is that there are gardens in your neighborhood that offer them fresh food- flowers. Besides putting up feeders, if you are available, plant some of their favorite plants and they will come to your garden more since they prefer natural sources to feeders.

    Tips For Hummingbird Nectar Recipe:

You need to concentrate on the following tips to make perfect nectar for hummingbirds.

    Purified Water:

Sometimes normal water contains some harmful chemicals and has a strong taste, so you need light purified water to make perfect nectar. You can also boil the water for that purpose, but make sure you dont reduce water volume during boiling. It may increase the sugar concentration in the water. If you are a little confused, buy this cheap purified water or any other of your choice.

    Refined sugar:

Sometimes you use the unrefined sugar in place of regular white sugar and think that its ok. But unrefined sugar is very heavy compared to regular white sugar, which may cause harmful effects on birds. So always use refined white sugar to make perfect nectar-like natural nectar obtained from flowers. We are recommending you one that works best, but you can buy any white sugar.

The ratio of sugar and water can be slightly adjusted but always try to maintain the perfect ratio of 1:4 ratio of sugar and water. Less sugar water is not attractive for birds because they get sweeter nectar from flowers. The more sugar-concentrated water is not easy for birds to digest. So always try maintaining a perfect concentration 1:4 ratio of sugar and water.

    Cool before use:
