How Do You Keep Fasting Numbers Low

Gestational Diabetes Blood Sugar Levels High In Morning

I was wondering what worked and didnt work, im still trying to get the hang of it, but i mostly get high numbers in the morning.

I either eat flavored almonds before bed or Fage 0% Greek Yogurt with some frozen mixed berries in it. my fasting will be in the 80’s every time with those two snacks.

I’ve just realized that I need to have a shorter fast rather than longer. My last pregnancy I needed 10 hrs to be in range but now am able to keep it in check with a shorter fast. I have a small glass of milk and a Greek yogurt. Sometimes I will add almonds or peanuts

I tried everything from no snacks to just protein snacks, and nothing worked. Exercise didnt help, so I was put on insulin.

I was very upset about this at first, but since the insulin Ive only had 2 high fasting numbers in 12 weeks!

I’m just not sure if I’m having the snack to early, too late, or if it’s what I’m eating. I don’t have this problem on weekends but I sleep for 9-10 hours whereas I’m up at 5am on weekdays.

Mine today was 120 :/ i have tried snack and no snack after dinner and i still haven’t been able to get good numbers. I just started the diet this week, could that have something to do with it or i should give up and accept the fact that i need medicine? My other numbers throughout the day are always really good.

I’m on my 11th day now and my fasting result has gone down to 84-92. After meals, I get 103-117.

How Do I Lower My Blood Sugar Level If I Have Gestational Pregnancy

A little more than 9.2% of pregnant women have gestational diabetes. It is very common that all women are tested during their pregnancy. If you havent yet, bring it up to your physicians attention. The cause is really unknown, but doctors believe that it is because the extra hormones that are released during pregnancy hinder the insulin sensitivity and increase the need for more insulin. It is very important to keep blood sugar levels under control because high blood sugars can lead to complications such as:

  • Premature labor
  • Pre-eclampsia which can lead to seizures
  • Increased risk of the mother to develop type 2 diabetes later in life

Lowering blood sugar with gestational diabetes is a lot like the other ways mentioned above.

They include:

Breastfeeding after the baby is born is a great way to lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life as well as providing many benefits for the baby. Read this article / that I wrote about all of the benefits of breastfeeding.

Personalizing Your Diet Based On Blood Sugar Response

In addition to seeing your healthcare provider, there are steps you can take to reduce your blood sugar levels. If you check your blood sugar after meals and keep track of those measurements, along with the types and amounts of food you ate, you may be able to see which foods are problematic.

Although an increase in blood sugar is usually due to eating high-carb foods, all carbs are not the same when it comes to raising blood sugar. Because starchy foods digest down to glucose very quickly, some starchy foods may end up having a much greater impact on blood sugar than you might expect.

For instance, even though a banana tastes sweeter than a baked potato, the potato may actually have a bigger impact on blood sugar.13

Because high-carb foods have the biggest impact on blood sugar levels, it makes sense to reduce them, no matter what type of diet you follow. The American Diabetes made this point in a 2019 paper on nutrition for people with diabetes.14

Sometimes making gradual changes can work best. Our guide, Eating better: six steps down carb mountain, can help you lower your carb intake, one step at a time.

If youve been diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, our guide to the best foods for diabetes can help you make choices that may reduce your need for blood sugar control medications.

If a food or beverage seems to be causing your blood sugar to rise too much, try leaving it out of your diet for a few days to see if you notice a difference.

Future Risks Post Birth

A 2002 publication19 from Diabetes Care comparing 28 studies found that elevated fasting levels during pregnancy was the most common risk factor associated with future risk of type 2 diabetes:

Cumulative incidence of type 2 diabetes increased markedly in the first 5 years after delivery and appeared to plateau after 10 years. An elevated fasting glucose level during pregnancy was the risk factor most commonly associated with future risk of type 2 diabetes.

  • Will Gestational Diabetes Go Away

Most likely, after you deliver your baby, gestational diabetes should go away. About six weeks after delivery, your doctor will check your blood glucose level to see if its in the normal range again.

However, because you had gestational diabetes, youre at a higher risk for having it again in another pregnancy. Youre also at a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes. To learn how to prevent type 2 diabetes, read our article on prevention.

Do Exercise To Improve Blood Sugar

Appropriate regular physical activity is often recommended during pregnancy, even without diabetes. But if you have gestational diabetes, being active is a must. Regular exercise is also beneficial to overall health and may help to improve glucose metabolism, advises Heard. Respect your pregnant status and choose exercises that wont put you at risk. For example, swimming, water aerobics, and walking are all great choices, while high-impact aerobics or activities such as basketball, which could lead to impacts or falls, should be sidelined for a while.

Pregnant woman with gestational diabetes is recommended to eat 6 small meals throughout the day, about 2-3 hours between meals. Most likely the most dreaded part of having diabetes is taking your blood glucose reading 4 times a day, and yes, it involves needles. However after the first few days and figuring out the right settings on your device for getting the blood sample, its quite easy and painless, it becomes second nature to you.

What Causes High Blood Sugar Levels In The Morning

Commonly known reasons why your blood sugar may be high in the morning include high-carb bedtime snacks and not enough diabetes medications.

Yet two lesser-known reasons may be causing your morning blood sugar woes: the dawn phenomenon and the Somogyi effect. These causes of high morning blood sugar levels are a result of body changes and reactions that happen while you are sleeping.

Do Check Blood Sugar Regularly To Decrease Diabetes Complications

In order to decrease the risk of complications from gestational diabetes, close monitoring of fasting and postprandial postmeal blood sugar are essential, says obstetrician and gynecologist Asha Heard, MD, assistant professor in the clinical section of maternal fetal medicine at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. Your fasting blood sugar goal should be less than 95 milligrams per deciliter , your two-hour postprandial blood sugar goal should be less than 120 mg/dL, and your one-hour postprandial blood sugar goal should be less than 130 mg/dL, Dr. Heard advises. Its a good idea to meet with a diabetes educator to learn how to check your blood sugar and how to make adjustments to your diet for gestational diabetes and activity levels to meet these goals.

    Research Design And Methods

Four men and seven women diagnosed with type 2 diabetes who were not taking insulin completed the study. Participants provided a clinically determined A1C reading from a recent blood analysis. All participants gave written informed consent, and the study was approved by the institutional review board at Arizona State University.

Participants maintained 24-h diet records for 3 days and measured fasting glucose at 0700 h for 3 consecutive days with a calibrated glucometer before the start of the study. Participants were instructed to continue usual prescription medication use during the study. Utilizing a randomized crossover design with a 3- to 5-day washout period between treatments, participants followed a standardized meal plan for 2 days, consuming either 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar or water at bedtime with 1 oz cheese . The standardized meal plan was designed to reflect the individualâs typical diet. Participants were instructed to record all foods and beverages ingested during each 2-day treatment period.

Fasting glucose was recorded with a calibrated glucometer by each participant during the trial: at baseline and day 2 at 0700 h. These results were downloaded by the research staff from each participantâs glucometer memory. A multivariate repeated-measures ANOVA test with body weight as a covariate was used to determine a significant time-by-treatment effect using SPSS .

Track Both Your Carbs And Blood Sugar

How To Measure Your Blood Sugar | Gestational Diabetes Blood Sugar

Most pregnant women with gestational diabetes are very good about tracking their blood sugar numbers. However, just tracking the numbers without know what you eat to get those numbers is useless.

If you track both what you eat at each meals and your blood sugar one hour after, youll have better idea of which food tends to raise your blood sugar the most, and which doesnt.

This is what I have my clients do. If the blood sugar 1 hour after meal is high, check your blood sugar again at 2 hours after meal. If this number is high, then most likely your last meal has too much carbs. If the 2 hour after meal number is normal, then mostly like the carb from the last meal is too refined, or you need to increase fats or protein with their meal.

So you see, you can easily lower your blood sugar with these simple changes to your diet, and you dont have to eat rabbit food if you dont want to.
