Where Is The Best Place To Hang A Hummingbird Feeder
Hummingbird feeders should be placed in partial sun. If your feeder is in the sun all day it will spoil faster. You want to put the feeder somewhere where you can see it but also somewhere that the hummingbirds feel comfortable. They dont like to be out in the open, so the partial shade of a tree or bush, or hanging from a canopy or your house is a good location.
The Window Hummingbird Feeder
I am absolutely loving this little window hummingbird feeder that I purchased earlier in the summer.
You can find it on Amazon here, its the Aspects 407 Jewel Box Window Hummingbird Feeder, 8-Ounce Bird Feeder.
It has been on sale lately, so its a great time to purchase it. If you are looking to by, I have found two different retailers on Amazon, so check the other hummingbird feeder seller here to see which one is the lowest.
We literally had birds at this feeder within an hour of putting it up, in fact these little hummingbirds are in and out of here all day long and they love to buzz my head when I go out to fill it.
I really like this style because filling it is really easy, all you do is lift the lid OR you can remove the entire base and bring it in the house to rinse and refill and then it just snaps back onto the main base which is held to the window with suction cups.
Ours has been up since early May, with no issues and is still in great condition!
My next goal is to try to get the hummingbirds to eat out of my hand! I recently visited with a neighbor who does this and apparently, its not that hard if you can get them used to you.
Amazon sells this Aroma Trees Handheld Hummingbird Feeders Kit which is what my neighbor used to train her hummingbirds to eat out of her hand. That might be my project for next summer! If you have used these, I would love to hear about it. I loved reading the reviews.
Do I Need To Boil Sugar Water For Hummingbirds
Courtesy Rhonda Horrall
Is it necessary to boil the sugar water mixture for hummingbird feeders? I just stir until the sugar is dissolved. Ive always wondered if its safe to make my hummingbird food recipe without boiling, asks Amy Kernes of Brea, California.
Opinions differ on the importance of boiling the hummingbird food mixture. We always do boil the water to neutralize some impurities that might be in the water or sugar. Besides, sugar dissolves more easily in hot water. But as soon as the feeder is outdoors, contaminants will get into the water anyway, brought by hummingbirds, insects or just a breeze. So at best, boiling the mixture keeps it fresh a little longer. If your water is good and your time is limited, washing the feeder thoroughly and often is more important than boiling the sugar water mixture.
Using really hot water will usually suffice to dissolve the sugar. However, if you plan on making extra hummingbird sugar water to store in the fridge or you have so-so water quality, then its best to boil.
Its always best to stick with real white sugar in your hummingbird feeders. Say no to sugar substitutes and brown sugar.

Consider Your Water Source

If your tap water contains heavy chemicals, strong tastes, or odors, consider using bottled or purified water for purer nectar. Boiling the water before adding the sugar will help purify it, but double-check the liquid amount after extended boiling to be sure you have not reduced the volume too far, which could make the sugar concentration much higher. Hummingbirds can enjoy sweeter nectar, but it will ferment more quickly and may clog feeding ports as the sugar crystallizes.

But Please Dont Add Red Dye To Your Hummingbird Food
Some studies have claimed that red dye can have health consequences for hummingbirds.
But heres why I dont add dye to my nectar.
It doesnt help! Hummingbirds do not care if the nectar is red or clear. So why take the chance that the added dye could be harmful?
The argument for adding dye to your nectar recipe is that it will attract more hummingbirds because they love the color red.
While its true that hummingbirds are attracted to red, 99% of hummingbird feeders already contain a red top or base or some other bright color, so the color of the nectar becomes irrelevant.
Where Should I Place My Hummingbird Feeder
There are a couple of points you should keep in mind when placing the feeder:
- Shade: The feeder should be covered from the sun, This makes sure the nectar stays good as long as possible and also gives the birds a spot to cool off.
- Visibility: Just because you should put the feeder in a shaded spot doesnt mean you should hide it completely. The feeder should still be visible to passing birds.
- Safety: This can be from harsh weather like strong wind, intense rain and blazing sun. But also other animals that may harm the birds while they try to eat.

You need to concentrate on the following tips to make perfect nectar for hummingbirds.
Purified Water:
Sometimes normal water contains some harmful chemicals and has a strong taste, so you need light purified water to make perfect nectar. You can also boil the water for that purpose, but make sure you dont reduce water volume during boiling. It may increase the sugar concentration in the water. If you are a little confused, buy this cheap purified water or any other of your choice.
Refined sugar:
Sometimes you use the unrefined sugar in place of regular white sugar and think that its ok. But unrefined sugar is very heavy compared to regular white sugar, which may cause harmful effects on birds. So always use refined white sugar to make perfect nectar-like natural nectar obtained from flowers. We are recommending you one that works best, but you can buy any white sugar.
The ratio of sugar and water can be slightly adjusted but always try to maintain the perfect ratio of 1:4 ratio of sugar and water. Less sugar water is not attractive for birds because they get sweeter nectar from flowers. The more sugar-concentrated water is not easy for birds to digest. So always try maintaining a perfect concentration 1:4 ratio of sugar and water.

People often ask what size feeder to buy. A large feederdoes not necessarily bring a lot of birds. However, if you live in a locationwith a lot of hummingbirds and do attract many, use a largefeeder that holds more nectar.Otherwise several smaller feeders will do the trick. The size is importantin regard to the nectar because it is helpful to fill your feederwith an amount of nectar the birds will drink within 3 to 5 days. Otherwise, you will waste nectar. The nectar needs to be fresh and changed every 3 to 5 days.
The consequenceof not keeping the nectar fresh is that your hummingbird friends will go elsewhere where there is a 4 star restaurant. We get many emails from our visitors asking why they are not seeing their hummingbirds. Most of the time the reason is that the nectar in their feeders had spoiled.
