Most Toxic Foods For Sugar Gliders

How To Make Sugar Glider Food – BML Diet

Sugar gliders will eat almost anything sweet that is put in front of them, but many of the sweet stuff we crave is toxic to sugar gliders so be sure that they steer well clear of these toxic foods and drinks:

  • Chocolate
  • Collard greens
  • Beets

Also as weve mentioned earlier, the following treats can be harmful to your sugar glider when consumed in large amounts excess fruit, mealworm and other insects, nuts, corn, pork, and seeds.

As well as making sure they avoid or limit the above foods, its also important to be aware of the dangers that an unbalanced diet can have on your sugar gliders health.

Sugar gliders are prone to metabolic bone disease as a result of having an improper ratio of calcium and phosphorous foods in their diet. If their diet is higher in phosphorous than calcium, this calcium imbalance can result in the nutrient being leached from their bones and other tissue to redress the balance making your sugar glider susceptible to fractures and many other health complications.

For this reason, owners are normally encouraged to add calcium supplements to their pet sugar gliders diet to ensure they will always have the right balance of calcium and phosphorous.

Veterinarians at the Arizona Exotic Animal Hospital recommend a calcium based multivitamin by brands like Glide-A-Mins or VitaMax sprinkled lightly over their fruit and veg portions every other day or mixed in with apple sauce or organic yogurt and hand-fed to them.

Getting Your Sugar Glider Used To Your Presence

You will soon notice that they are not crabbing anymore when they see you. You can then move on to the second step and get them used to your presence and smell.

For instance, give them a piece of clothes youve been wearing overnight or place it on top of the cage, where their sleeping pouch is. You may also place a cloth or fleece square that youve put your scent on into their sleeping box.

Speaking in a soft tone when close to the cage will show them that you dont mean any harm. Dont try to pet them as yet. They will probably start crabbing as soon as you approach the cage too close for the first few days.

What About Feeding Them Fruits Like Apples

HOW TO: Make Sugar Glider Food

Now, if you only have one baby Sugar glider, cut them about an eighth of a slice of apple every day and leave the peeling on it but just be sure to cut the seeds out. For 2 Sugar gliders, give them two slices and treat the apple the same. We also suggest that you DO NOT dice these apples into small chunks because they dry out a lot quicker that way and your Sugar gliders wont get the full benefit of all that natural fruit juice. Once youve cut the apple, just put it on the floor of the cage. Keeping it down low like that will make it easy for your Sugar glider to find it especially when the babies are small, However.. once your Sugar gliders start getting a little older, its usually a good idea to start putting their food up on a shelf. By doing this, youll find that the food stays fresher LONGER because any toilet droppings they make wont accidentally land in their food.

The Pet Glider Fresh Diet For Healthy Sugar Gliders

There are several different theories on what you should feed a sugar glider on a daily basis. But most sugar glider experts agree that these wonderful animals, when raised in captivity, require a fresh diet variety of fruit, fresh vegetables and protein. We recommend The Pet Glider Diet every day with The Pet Glider Multi-vitamins with calcium sprinkled on top, staples in the habitats at all time, mealworms and healthy treats. We have one of the top reputations for healthy gliders and we believe it is because of this diet and of course the loving care we give our sweethearts on a daily basis. We know that our sugar glider food takes a little more time to prepare than powdered versions, but it is well worth your time. Your sugar gliders will thank you, always give compliments to the chef. Avoid feeding anything with preservatives, sugar or color additives. Gliders in the wild eat very low fat diets and get lots of exercise gliding through the rain forest. Gliders raised in captivity, without a healthy diet, can become fat and develop health problems.

The Pet Glider Fresh Diet: The Pet Glider Fresh Diet consists of apple sauce, yogurt, calcium-fortified orange juice, oatmeal, protein , fresh or frozen vegetables and fruits. 1 ½ tablespoons per glider per day served in late afternoon.

Beginners Guide To Sugar Glider Care

Sugar gliders are very unique animals that many people in the general public dont even know exist. Over the past 15 years, they have been domesticated and are now known to make great little pets! If you are interested in bringing a sugar glider into your home, here is what you need to know.ABOUT SUGAR GLIDERS

Sugar gliders are native to places like Australia and Indonesia. They are not rodents as some would assume, but are marsupials, meaning they raise their young in a pouch on the mothers belly, similar to a kangaroo. They are nocturnal animals which means that they sleep through the day and are awake and active at night.

Sugar gliders get their name from the fact that they love eating sweet, sugary foods and that they have a thin membrane that stretches from their wrists to their ankles, much like a flying squirrel, that allows them to jump and glide through the air. In the wild, they can glide from tree to tree at a distance of up to 150 feet!

Adult sugar gliders weigh between 4-5 ounces and usually measure around 12 inches from nose to the tip of the tail. The tail is responsible for at least half of its length. These creatures are quite vocal and can bark somewhat like a small dog. When cared for properly, they can live in captivity up to 15 years.

DIET

What Should I Not Give My Sugar Glider

Chocolate and dairy products should not be fed to your pet sugar glider. Avoid foods treated with pesticides. Fruits and vegetables known to be high in oxalates should be avoided as they will impair calcium absorption. Those of concern include raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, spinach, carrots, beets, pears, lettuce, figs and collards. Raw corn should be fed only very occasionally, as it is very sweet as well. Changing diets should be done very gradually, with careful attention paid to ensure that the animal is actually eating enough.Consult with a veterinarian familiar with sugar gliders if you have any questions or problems.

Bml Diet For Sugar Gliders

The Bourbons Modified Leadbeaters sugar glider diet can easily be fixed at home.

Its a close substitute for the original Leadbeaters Diet.

Most of the original diet ingredients were not available in the American market, hence the need for innovation.

Be very careful before substituting any ingredients in the recipes because gliders can be a bit picky.

Ingredients

Directions

  • Blend the egg, honey, and apple juice until you achieve a smooth blend
  • Add blue-labeled vitamin supplement and the Gerber juice in the blender and blend it to achieve a smooth mixture.
  • Add the wheat germ, chicken baby food, dry baby cereal, and the pink-labeled Rep-Cal.
  • Blend again until smooth
  • Pour your mixture into your ice cube tray and freeze it.
  • Remove frozen cubes at least an hour before feeding, so it melts.

Note that the BML diet should be supplemented with vegetables.

If you choose to use frozen vegetables, remove them together with the ice cube.

You can feed your glider with fresh fruits, mealworms, or treats during the day if theyre hungry.

That said, the BML diet is a complete meal, and it should keep them through the day.
