Risks Of Homemade Waxing
Although there are some benefits to waxing at home, it may come with some risks. The only risks you have for waxing at home would be if you arent familiar with safe waxing techniques. One risk would be burning yourself.
If you use the hot wax on your body too soon before allowing it to cool down, you may burn your skin. Depending on how badly youve burned your skin and even the severity of the burn, you may need either a first aid kit or visit your doctor.
Another risk of homemade waxing is removing skin instead of hair. If the area of your body youre wanting to wax is too dry, the wax might stick to the skin instead of just the hair. This can cause inflammation and even pain while your skin heals.
Benefits Of Sugar Wax
1. Natural Ingredients Sugaring uses ingredients you can find in your kitchen, which includes lemon, water, and of course, sugar. No random unknown chemicals. You know what you are putting in your mixture. There will be less risk of an allergic reaction and less irritation after the treatment.
2. Reduced Ingrown Hairs- Shaving and aggressive hair removal can cause ingrown hairs. Ingrown hairs grow back into the skin. If not appropriately treated and over time, it can lead to infection or cyst. Aint nobody got time for that.
3. Less Hair Growth- Because sugaring pulls hair from the root, the hair follicle becomes damaged, and over time will slow/stop hair growth.
4. Easy Clean-up- Sugar is water-soluble, so cleanup is super simple. Plain water will get rid of any residue.
5. You Can Make Different Variations At Home- Depending on the temperature and how long you heat the sugar wax in the microwave, you can determine how you apply it and how you remove it. For example, cooked in my microwave for 3 minutes and 30 seconds, I will make a wax where I will apply with a Popsicle stick and remove it with some muslin cloth. If I heat for around a minute longer, I can use it as hard wax. Hard wax can be applied with a Popsicle stick or your fingers, and you do not need a cloth to remove. You simply pull off the wax in the direction of hair growth.
Basic Sugar Waxing Tips
Please Exfoliate. If you want sugar waxing to work for you, then by all means, exfoliate your skin first. Use a good sugar scrub to gently slough off dead cells, grime and other impurities from your skin. You can easily make your own exfoliating sugar scrub at home by combining ½ cup of sugar and ¼ cup of oil of choice. Check out my delightful Rosemary Sugar Scrub Recipe if youre looking for a DIY exfoliating scrub!
Hot Shower. Take a hot shower or bath to open the hair follicles and soften skin.
Dont Immediately Sugar Wax After a Shower. Much as I said exfoliate your skin right before sugar waxing and I know almost all of us exfoliate in the shower, dont sugar wax immediately after your shower without properly drying your skin. There shouldnt be any moisture on your skin. Your skin should be completely dry for the wax to hold on to the hairs.
For Perfect Hair Removal. You can even dust baby/talcum powder or plain corn starch all over the areas youre going to wax, wait for maybe an hour then sugar wax. The powder will help the sugar wax grip onto your hairs easier.

Why My Sugar Wax Wont Thicken
One word: Too much water. Alright, not exactly one word. But you get the picture. Youve added too much water. You must keep on boiling it until it has a thick consistency. On a candy thermometer you would be able to tell because its at the soft ball stage. Or if youre going by your eyesight it would be an amber color.
Your best bet is to start over and use a better recipe. Read the recipe closely. Get a measuring cup if you cant tell the proper measurements by eyesight.

There are two ways I use to clean them.
1- Cover the inside of the saucepan with very hot water and a trickle of washing-up liquid. Leave it for a while and wash it as usual.
