    My go-to recipe: Whisk together one tablespoon each apple cider vinegar and lemon juice, add a half teaspoon of minced garlic, a dash of ground black pepper, and a few fresh basil leaves, chopped.     How can vinegar be so powerful? I think it has to do with our ancestral diet. We used to eat carbohydrate in highly complex forms that took a long time to break down in the intestines. Some of that material may have converted to vinegar before being absorbed. Vinegar may be a signal to our bodies to produce insulin and not resist it. Todays highly refined carbohydrates are absorbed long before they start breaking down. Our bodies dont get the ancestral signals that carbohydrates are coming, so theyre not ready for them. Drinking a bit of vinegar might trigger the hormones and transmitters that are now missing the boat.

    This theory might be nonsense, but the benefits of vinegar are proven reality.     The key is to start off with a low dose, and gradually increase slowly. Start with one teaspoon in a glass of filtered water, one to three times daily. If youre not seeing results, increase to two teaspoons in water twice per day. If your blood pressure is still not decreasing, increase the dosage to one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in water three times daily.

    It is also important to note that not all apple cider vinegar is equal. You will want to get raw apple cider vinegar with the mother intact. The cloudy, brown, cobweb-like substance called the mother is a sign that the friendly bacteria and enzymes have not been removed. Select organic, unfiltered, and unpasteurized apple cider vinegar to treat conditions like high blood pressure.

    What Else Might Lower Blood Sugar

    An Australian review proposed that the polyphenol compounds in cinnamon and a number of other foods may help regulate insulin and glucose metabolism . Some of the other foods that might be expected to help with blood sugar control include cocoa, tea and coffee, grapes, pomegranates, berries and olive oil. Most of these have not been well studied for their ability to lower blood sugar. Presumably apple cider vinegar also contains some polyphenols If so, these compounds might explain why cinnamon and apple cider vinegar seems to be a good combination.

    We are not sure about the honey, though. One study of honey vinegar syrup found no benefit for fasting blood sugar and undesirable effects on beneficial HDL cholesterol .
