The Eat This Not That
Whether you’re a protein powder connoisseur or a first-time buyer, you’re just as likely to be overwhelmed and confused by the countless options and label trickery. That’s why we’ve rounded up a list of the best sugar-free protein powder brands available to you.
To whittle down the list to the cream of the crop, the Nutrition Twins recommend going with the more simple protein powders with shorter ingredient lists because “there is less room for ingredients that could contain contaminants or pose an allergy threat and it allows our clients to mix in whatever they prefer.”
The following protein powders are completely free of any sweeteners, including sugar, artificial sweeteners, non-nutritive sweeteners like stevia or monk fruit extract, or sugar alcohols.
NOTE: You may see that some powders list 1-3 grams of sugar. These are naturally-occurring sugars that are from the protein source. None of these grams of sugar are from added sweeteners.
We’ve split them up into plant-based/vegan and dairy protein, so you can pick according to your dietary preferences.
Glucerna Rich Chocolate Shake Is Gluten
Glucerna is gluten-free and a good choice if youre lactose intolerant. Glucerna protein shakes, which are formulated both for people with diabetes and for those looking to watch their weight, come in four flavors: Rich Chocolate, Homemade Vanilla, Creamy Strawberry, and Classic Butter Pecan, with the chocolate and vanilla also available in snack-sized portions. Overall, they’re a good choice. Their carb content places these shakes in the range of a moderate-sized snack or part of a meal, Dr. Ramsetty says.

Is Glucerna Better Than Ensure For Diabetics
For people with diabetes, a supplement drink is one that helps in the regulation of the high fasting blood sugar level common among them.
Depending on type 1 or type 2, there are specific factors responsible for high blood sugar level. Type 1 diabetes lack an important enzyme needed for the storage of sugar. However, the type 2 diabetic does not lack the glucose converting enzyme, but shows no response to this enzyme.
A person with type-1 diabetes regularly requires an insulin shot to regulate his/her high blood sugar level. People with type 2 diabetes do not need an insulin shot , but best regulate blood sugar level by selective intake of food and use of dietary supplement meals like Glucerna and Ensure.
And Then More Bad Carbs
Add the refined starch that rapidly turns into glucose in the blood, and the truly bad carbs add up to 56 % of the energy in this drink.
This is not that different from eating a bag of candy or drinking soda. Add a vitamin pill and youll get something very similar.
If you want to ensure that you become obese and sick, then you should buy this drink.

Bob’s Red Mill Protein & Fiber Nutritional Booster
“We really like Bob’s Red Mill as a brand,” share the Nutrition Twins, “and Bob’s Red Mill Protein & Fiber Nutritional Booster is awesome because it is loaded with fiber and protein.” Plus, “unlike many other pea protein powders, there are no chemical solvents or artificial sweeteners used to make Bob’s Red Mill Pea Protein Powder,” they add.
And if you’re looking to add vegetarian or vegan protein to your diet because you’re on a plant-based diet, this blend is a great pick. ” is a great source of iron,” explain the Nutrition Twins, which is a great bonus for the people who tend to pick plant proteins and are more likely to be low in this micronutrient. How To Buy Truly Sugar
While a bag or tub may stamp the “unsweetened” claim on the front label, always make sure to check the ingredients to be sure there are no non-nutritive sweeteners on the label.
Manufacturers can still claim “unsweetened” or “no sugar added” and use artificial sweeteners in their mix.
And while you might see “Stevia Free” plastered next to the brand name, this can often be a sign that a manufacturer has gone with another natural sugar alternative: monk fruit extract or “Luo Han Guo.”
What Should You Be Getting
So, what benefits should users be garnering from a quality nutrition supplement / meal-replacement product? Natural whole food supplementation is going to be the best avenue for individuals to truly get the optimal nutrients however, we understand circumstances may disallow this, either due to suppressed appetite, inability to chew, or simply just less access to these foods. Thus, we strongly feel that a nutrition supplement shake should be giving its consumers the following:
1. Quality whey protein to support lean muscle growth and maintenance. Given many use these products either in recovery, to help maintain their bodies as they age, or for growing children, adequate protein is a must. For those seeking to manage weight, whey protein offers a way to feel fuller for longer.
2. Fiber to support digestive function. Those suffering from a loss in appetite, may not necessarily be able to get their fiber from food and diet alone.
3. Low Potassium & Low Sodium. For those who are going through dialysis treatment, this requirement is critically important.
4. High in Calcium. For children and adults, calcium is a crucial building block for maintenance of strong bones as well as growth. Those taking these products as an alternative to milk may not be receiving the adequate calcium they require.

The Sugar Content Of Ensure Plus
Nutrition supplements, such as Ensure Plus, are often used to help replace missing nutrients in the diet. They can also be used to increase calorie intake and promote weight gain in malnourished individuals. While they provide the body with essential vitamins, minerals and muscle building protein, they are also high in sugars, which can lead to high blood glucose levels and an increased risk for diabetes.
Protein Throughout The Day
The American Diabetes Association advise people with diabetes to space their meals out during the day and not to skip meals or to eat too much.
The body can only absorb and use so much protein at one time. It uses what it can and then creates waste with the leftover.
Instead of having 50 g of protein in one meal, for example, it is better to spread that 50 g out into three to four meals containing 15-20 g each.
A protein shake with added oatmeal, yogurt, and fruit could make a meal.
It is also important to vary your sources of protein.
Protein shakes can act as a protein supplement, but it is still important to eat a variety of protein foods, such as meat, fish, dairy produce, nuts, and beans, as these provide other essential nutrients.
There are different types of protein shake. Some you can make from a protein powder, while others come ready to drink.
Both of these can contain sugar, artificial sweeteners, and unnecessary chemicals.
People with diabetes should take care to limit sweeteners like sugar, agave, or fruit juice in their shakes.

Diabetic Liquid Meal Replacers
We’re always concerned with what we can, can’t, should, and should not eat. We pass by the shelf, and in big, bold letters it says “For Diabetics!” Is it? Should we add this one to our meal plan? What about that one? And so on …
From Slimfast on down, there are a lot of liquid “meal replacers” out there. All have carb counts some have diabetic exchanges. Strictly speaking, you can factor such a product into your meal plan. Should you?
Be careful. All of the ones I looked at: Slimfast, Ensure, Ensure Plus, Ensure Glucerna, CarboRite At Last, Diabetic Care Choice, and Enterex Diabetic, are “loaded” foods. Designed to provide a meal’s nutrition, they are full of protein, carb, fat, and vitamins. If you have nothing else to eat, they can keep you alive. Used under close supervision, they’ll do what they say they’ll do — help keep you slim, properly fed, and well nourished. But there’s a problem — and it’s not with the products — it’s with us.
In America, we’re accustomed to reaching for food because we feel like it, and eating ’til we’re full. Undisciplined snacking. It’s dangerous. It’s why we’re the fattest nation on the planet. It’s the “see-food” diet.
Ensure Glucerna is similar, but specifically formulated with the needs of diabetics in mind. There is less sugar. But, as diabetic diet management is not the avoidance of sugar but the management of a total budget of carbohydrates and calories, the avoidance of sugar is nice, but of incremental value.

Are Bananas Ok For People With Diabetes To Eat
Bananas definitely can be part of a healthful diet for someone whos trying to manage their blood sugar, says Giancoli. Theyre not that high on the glycemic index because of the resistant starch and pectin that dampen that blood sugar rise.
First and foremost, if you have diabetes or youre pre-diabetic, you need to follow your healthcare providers instructions when it comes to diet, but for the most part, those living with diabetes should be eating a healthful diet that ought to include fruits like bananas if thats a fruit they like to eat, says Giancoli.
Too Much Sugar In Ensure We’re Not So Sure About Ensure
Ensure, advertised as the “number one doctor recommended” brand in the dense-nutrition liquid / supplement shakes space, is simply put, a bad choice for nutrition supplementation. Today, you’ll see Ensure being doled out regularly at hospitals, clinics and the like, used as supplementation to post-surgery patients or those who have trouble swallowing / have a loss in appetite. Its sister brand, PediaSure is served to children as a nutritional supplement . Now, why is Ensure not the best option for either of these cases?
Let’s take a look at their nutrition label:The first thing that comes to attention is the amount of sugar in each one of these drinks! Ensure is chock-full of sugar. In fact, one of their reviewers said it best:
As a doctor I would not recommend to any of my patients. To obtain 100% of some of the vitamins and minerals in the product you would have to drink four bottles which would mean ingesting 60gms of SUGAR!
The same goes for PediaSure, a product supposedly great for children. The macronutrient profiles of all of these products appear to do more harm than good. One might as well take vitamin tablets with sugar water – you’d pretty much achieve the same effect. Again, keeping in mind that many of those that depend on Ensure / PediaSure are either very young, older, or recovering from sugery – does it make sense to give these individuals products with so. much. sugar?

Glucerna Vs Ensure What Is The Difference
Glucerna and Ensure products are both produced by the same company. They are both nutritional drinks that are low in calories and glycemic index.
They provide a complete balanced diet and nutrition to whoever drinks it. However, there are some differences between these products too.
The first and the most noteworthy difference is in its purpose of production.
While Glucerna is produced explicitly for persons with diabetes, Ensure is made primarily for non-diabetics.
Glucerna is made to meet the needs of persons with unstable blood sugar level, those whose blood sugar level rises over the normal range in the intake of any meal. Glucerna helps them better to manage their blood sugar level in a safe range.
On the other hand, Ensure is not made for diabetics, but to provide a nutritional meal supplement for health maintenance, weight loss plan, improvement in appetite, and in general, balanced nourishment.
Furthermore, Glucerna and Ensure also differ based on their nutritional content. In a matter of their caloric content, Ensures is more.
A bottle of Glucerna supplement drink has about 200 calories. Meanwhile, a bottle of Ensure has 220 calories. Their fat content also differs, in that Glucerna is higher in fat, which accounts for a majority of its caloric source.
But Ensure has lower fat and higher carbohydrate /sugar. The protein content in both supplement drinks also differ. Glucerna is richer in protein than Ensure.

Orgain Nutrition Shake A Healthy Alternative To Ensure
May 14, 2015 By Alison
My younger daughter recently had a piece of food get stuck in her throat. She was shaken by the event more than I realized, and she had trouble eating. I thought that her anxiety would pass more quickly than it did and that she would begin eating normally, but a day turned into three, and the doctors found ketones in her urine.
I learned that ketones in urine can indicate that a person isnt getting enough calories or nutrition. I knew she needed more calories, but she was refusing to eat foods with any texture at all. The doctor recommended that she drink Ensure, the most popular brand of nutrition shakes. I headed to the pharmacy, read the ingredients on the cans of Ensure, and thought to myself, I am not putting this crap in my baby.
A trip to Whole Foods and a talk with the employee in the vitamin aisle led me to Orgain, a brand of a nutrition shakes with all natural, organic ingredients. I was so relieved to find this product and over the next few days, these shakes were a life-saver for my daughter. These got her through the psychological hump from only being able to drink liquids and eat soft foods, to introducing foods with texture back into her diet. It has been three weeks since she choked, and she is still not back to eating all the foods she used to. She still likes to occasionally drink the chocolate milk and now I use the vanilla Orgain as a base in smoothies for both of my children.
