How To Know If You Suffer Gluten Intolerance

Symptoms of Glucose Intolerance

First, avoid eating products that can contain gluten for 60 days. To do so, it is not enough to just stop eating bread and pasta with gluten. Lets not forget that gluten is also a food additive in many processed products. Therefore, read the product label carefully. Moreover, you will have to order a gluten-free meal if you go to a restaurant.

It may be difficult to give up the products that you usually eat as well as the belief that whole bread is always healthy.

A Difference Of Opinion On Carb Intolerance

The medical community is also at odds over the issue of sugar intolerance due to carbohydrate intolerance.

One school of thought suggests that eating many carbohydrate-rich foods, even the healthy ones of over 100 grams of sugar, can cause sugar intolerance. They say that you become intolerant is when your blood sugars dont go back to normal after two hours of eating. They stay higher, which some say can trigger insulin resistance so that your body needs more insulin to remove the sugar from your bloodstream.

A second opinion says scientifically there is no cause and effect between carbohydrates and insulin resistance, although there can be connections between eating a lot of sugar and illnesses. These scientists suggest that other factors should be considered when talking about carbohydrate or sugar intolerant, like their activity levels, genetics, and overall diet.

The concern is that people will think of all carbohydrates as bad and avoid even eating healthy whole carbohydrates that their body needs.

Feeling Lethargic And Fatigued

How do you feel within yourself when it comes to energy levels? Those with a glucose intolerance tend to feel like they dont have enough energy to get through the day. Theres the constant need to eat more sugar or drink more caffeine to get more energy through bursts. Of course, this makes the whole thing worse. You end up with a sugar crash and then feel the need for even more soon after.

Your body isnt dealing with the glucose in the right way. Youll have more crashes throughout the day, meaning that your mind just doesnt remain within the game.

The problem with fatigue is that its often an overlooked symptom. After all, its a symptom of so many other problems, and you genuinely may not have slept well the night before. You can try all sorts of herbal remedies to help get more iron into your body and sleep better, but you still feel tired for no reason.

Your fatigue is due to the way that your body is absorbing and utilizing the sugar. The body doesnt use it thoroughly, so you dont get as much energy from the sugars as you once did. Of course, you end up eating more sugar, which causes more health problems!

After a while, your muscles will start to ache. You can even feel cramping, as you will also feel thirstier, despite drinking plenty. Your doctor will want to know about all these seemingly minor symptoms that are linked to prediabetes.

Glucose Intolerance Is Known As Prediabetes

Most people right now will wonder what glucose intolerance is. Your body naturally creates this, so how could you possibly be intolerant to it?

The medical term is impaired glucose intolerance or prediabetes. Its a term given to individuals who are at a higher than normal risk of developing diabetes at some point, especially if they continue with the current lifestyle that they have.

This isnt just about your diet, though. It could be that your body doesnt produce enough insulin or that the normal hepatic glucose output is higher than it should be. Some doctors have linked the intolerance to the poor disposal of blood sugar from the system.

Doctors wanted to remove the social stigma of having diabetes. At the same time, they needed a way to note if someone was a higher risk, as well as note those who were at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Now that you know more about what glucose intolerance is, its time to note the main symptoms. This will help you get an official diagnosis and help to avoid this issue turning into full-blown diabetes.

You Constantly Run Out Of Motivation

Common Causes of Chronic Diarrhea

Aside from flagging energy levels, take note if you’ve been lacking motivation lately. “If you feel drowsy and tired after eating a sugar-heavy snack, then you should realize that your body is not burning or storing glucose at the rate you are consuming it,”nutritionist Parker Condit tells Bustle. “In addition to this being a lousy way to live, it’s also an indicator that something is wrong If all you feel like doing is sleeping and lounging around, then it’s time to start being more aware of what you are consuming.”

It may be that eating a lot of sugar isn’t working for you, and that it’s officially time to consider eating and drinking less of it. It can certainly take some time to get used to the change, and it doesn’t mean you can’t have sugar on occasion. But sometimes the payoff is worth the initial adjustment phase, especially when it comes to your health.

What Is The Difference Between The Two Types Of Sugar Sensitivity

The symptoms for both are the same – but it is important to check for HFI with a DNA test.

Hereditary Sugar Sensitivity is a rare genetic condition. The special enzyme for breaking down fructose is not produced. If you find out you have sugar sensitivity – see your doctor for a DNA test to rule out HFI. With this form of sugar sensitivity it is vital to observe a very strict Sugar-free diet. Otherwise there is risk of serious disease including liver failure.

Sugar malabsorption on the other hand is common and affects about 30% – especially people who have many soft drinks and/or soft drink mixers in a week. With Sugar Malabsorption the epithelial cells on the surface of the small intestine are not available to break down the fructose, so you get sick.

Treatment of HFI is a very strict Sugar-free diet for life. Treatment for Sugar Malabsorption is a Sugar-free diet with some concessions. With this latter form – you can find a threshold level: safely eat some Sugar without symptoms.

  • Gastro-intestinal problems: flatulence, Stomach Bloating, Diarrhea, Irritable Bowel
  • Malabsorption: low iron , osteoporosis or other nutrient deficiency
  • Poor skin, nails and hair
  • Depression or mood disturbances
  • Cravings

The symptoms of both types of Sugar sensitivity are very similar to Lactose Sensitivity so they can be mistaken for one another. You cannot diagnose your food sensitivity from symptoms alone. To differentiate among them it’s best to keep a Journal.

Symptoms Of Food Allergies

An allergy can be confused with intolerance, but there are some distinct signs and symptoms.

Symptoms of a food allergy vary from person to person and can even change depending on the type of food consumed.

People who are allergic to certain components within food tend to experience symptoms after consuming them.

Symptoms include:

  • rashes or hives
  • nausea or vomiting

Severe allergies can cause a serious reaction known as anaphylaxis. These reactions can come on quickly and may be fatal if left untreated. Symptoms of a severe anaphylactic response to an allergen can include:

  • swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, or throat
  • shortness of breath or being unable to breathe properly
  • a wheezing cough
  • a sudden drop in blood pressure
  • a racing heart
  • dizziness or loss of consciousness

People with severe allergies should carry antihistamine medications or epinephrine pens on them at all times.

Anyone who experiences new signs of an allergic reaction should contact their doctor or allergist. Symptoms of anaphylaxis require medical attention immediately, even if the person has already taken antihistamine medication or used epinephrine.

People who experience signs of an allergy or intolerance for the first time should also visit a doctor to discuss their options.

A true allergy to sugar in itself is for the most part non-existent, whereas some sugar intolerances are quite common. The two are similar but have some key differences.

/7sugar Intolerance Is A Real Thing

You might have heard about milk intolerance or food intolerance, but have you ever come across the term ‘sugar intolerance’? We are not kidding! Sugar intolerance is a real thing.

Most people can binge eat cakes and ice-creams and still feel alright, while others are super sensitive to even a small amount of sweet. It is true you might suffer from sugar hangover after eating plenty of sugar, which can spike your blood sugar level and can make you feel lethargic. But for the one suffering from sugar intolerance, the symptoms can be more severe.

When To Call 911 For Sugar Allergies

9 Signs You Have A Sugar Intolerance, That You’re Probably Missing

Although true sugar allergies are rare in children, they can be life threatening. Call 911 and/or get your child to the emergency room immediately if:

  • Your child has stopped breathing
  • Your child has difficulty breathing, or slowed breathing
  • Your child has lost consciousness
  • Your childs face, throat, or tongue is swelling

These symptoms show that your child is experiencing anaphylaxis. It’s a severe and sudden allergic reaction. While you wait for emergency medical care, administer an epinephrine injection immediately. Epinephrine manages the severity of anaphylactic shock. You can also give your child over-the-counter antihistamines. These manage any mild, leftover symptoms following the auto-injector.Even if your childs symptoms go away after the injection, consult a medical professional. Following the initial anaphylaxis attack, theres a chance theres a second one around the corner.

You Feel Distracted & Scattered Throughout The Day

You’ve probably heard of a little thing called brain fog, which is that fuzzy out-of-it feeling that causes you to space out at work or forget where the heck you put your keys. As Sharla Mandere, CHHC, a holistic health and wellness coach, tells Bustle, sugar can cause these issues, and even lead to a lack of focus.

And this is particularly true if you have symptoms of adrenal fatigue, Dr. Carrie Lam, MD, DABFM, who is board certified in family medicine, tells Bustle. “When you eat too much sugar it forces your body to make extra insulin and cortisol,” she says, which can wear you down over time.

If you haven’t been feeling like yourself â checked out, tired, and lacking motivation â cutting back on sugar may be a big help.

How Do You Know If You Have Sugar Intolerance

Donuts. Chocolate. Candy. Cake.

Not the first four items on our shopping listhonest. But just four of thousands of things that are dependent on sugar for their rich, sweet taste. Also, a list of foods that most would agree would be classed as naughty. Because sugar is synonymous with indulgence and decadence, it has been demonized by the health community. Sugar has been linked with:

  • Obesity
  • Tooth Decay
  • Accelerated Aging

Not great PR for the white stuff, right? The problem with sugar is that it is far more ubiquitous than many realize. For example, fruit is rich in sugars in the form of fructose. When consumed in whole fruit, this is negated by the fibre content of the fruit. However, fruit juices and smoothies are problematic in that, when you blend fruit, you severely decrease the fibre content. This renders the fruit far less healthy and far more likely to contribute to weight gain and other significant health risks.

So, weve established that sugar can contribute to poor health outcomes, but can it be even worse? Do some people respond differently to sugar? Its time to take a look at sugar intolerance.

How To Cut Down On Sugar

Besides eating a nutrition-dense diet, there are other things you can do to cut down on your sugar intake.

  • Dont add sugar to your cereals, coffee, or foods: Adding sugars like honey, brown sugar, or syrup can cause gut problems, sugar intolerance, or weight gain. This means you learn to eat your oatmeal without a sweet topping. Substitute walnuts instead. This adds crunch without the sugar.
  • Avoid sugary juices, alcohol, and sports drinks: Learn to drink water when youre thirsty instead of a sugar alternative. Its surprising how much-hidden sugar is in juices and sports drinks, which seem so healthy.
  • Choose to eat or frozen fresh fruits: Eat fresh fruits. Stay away from fruits in syrups or sweeteners.
  • Read food labels: Youd be surprised how many foods contain sugar. Read food labels before you buy.
  • Smaller servings: Everybody needs a sweet treat once in a while. You can still eat a dessert now and then by halving the servings of sweets. So eat half cookie or brownie for dessert. This way, you can participate in birthdays or holidays without feeling deprived.
  • Use spices as substitutes for sugar: Shake some cinnamon in your coffee for a sweetener or add pumpkin spice to your morning oatmeal Spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, pumpkin spice, ginger, and cloves can add flavor to your foods, so you dont need sugar.

You Can’t Get To Sleep At Night

4 Chronic and Frequent Symptoms of Sucrose (Sugar) Intolerance.

Again, there are many factors to consider here, like your caffeine intake, stress levels, etc. But a lifestyle high in sugar might also be what’s keeping you up at night. As Hershenson says, sugar can prevent the body from getting into deep sleep mode.

Studies have shown a connection between shorter sleep and drinking sugar-sweetened beverages. While new research needs to be done, it won’t hurt to limit how much sugar you consume during the day, but especially before bed. Like caffeine, it isn’t something you’ll want to have in the evening, in particular.

Diet Modifications Can Help

People with an intolerance to sucrose must avoid many foods containing sucrose to manage their symptoms. Adopting a whole-foods diet, eliminating processed foods, and cooking at home using sucrose-free ingredients is a good start. It is also important to avoid or limit consumption of several fruits, juices, and vegetables that contain natural sucrose. Pharmaceutical therapy is also available to help manage symptoms.

If you suffer from bloating, gas, diarrhea, or stomach pain after eating foods that contain sugar, you need to be seen by a specialist to determine which sugar your body is not digesting properly. A correct diagnosis ensures that you can identify the foods you need to limit or avoid so you can manage your symptoms.

How Many People Have Sugar Sensitivity

  • Hereditary Sugar Sensitivity – is quite rare: Less than one in 10,000 – or 30,000 Americans. It is in your genes so it’s for life. To get a clinical diagnosis you need a stool test from your doctor. Even very small amouints of Fructose can cause reactions with HFI.
  • Sugar Malabsorption is very common. One in three people experience sugar sensitivity – most commonly to Fructose. However most don’t get symptoms until later in life. The particular sugar involved – Fructose – is found commonly in fruits, vegetables. honey, and thousands of processed foods like soft drinks and sweets.

Most sugar sensitivity is undiagnosed, but can be responsible for symptoms like stomach bloating, diarrhea, dehydration, unexplained weight loss and other intestinal distress. These are the kind of symptoms for which we dismiss in our busy lives by taking over-the-counter medications.

Fructose malabsorption is dose-dependent – meaning the problem only arises because of the high sugar content of many modern foods like soft drinks and processed foods. New Fructose-heavy sugars have recently been developed to replace cane sugar : for instance High Fructose Corn Syrup . This one especially is used extensively in manufactured foods due to its strong sweetening power and low cost.

You’ve Been Feeling Emotional Lately

An unstable mood can be caused, in many ways, by blood sugar fluctuations, which Hershenson says can impact how you feel. Studies have also shown a connection between the intake of sweet foods, beverages and added sugars, and symptoms of depression.

What you eat really can play a large role in how you feel overall, including mentally and emotionally. While speaking with a therapist will always be a good idea if you aren’t feeling like yourself, it can also help to pay attention to what you’re eating on a daily basis.

If you’re consuming a lot of sugar, you might notice a big difference if you balance out meals in a way that keeps your blood sugar even. Or by lessening your sugar intake and seeing how that makes you feel.

Living With A Dairy Intolerance Or Allergy

Glucose Intolerance

So, you or someone you love is dairy free. Now what? Some individuals who are lactose intolerant may still be able to consume dairy by using a product such as lactaid. This product is said to help break down the lactose found in dairy products such as milk and cheese to allow digestion without stomach discomfort. But for those with a dairy allergy or for whom this type of product is not effective, eliminating dairy may be the only option. That was the case for my husband who, in addition to being gluten free like I mentioned in my last post, is also dairy free. He has personally chosen to simply eliminate dairy from his diet and add very few dairy alternatives in its place. The number one dairy free item we use is almond milk. I have found it to be a great replacement in pancakes, waffles and baking, as well as for smoothies. I always recommend using the plain, unsweetened variety. Or, better yet, you can make it yourself as I have recently started doing after reading several articles about some questionable ingredients used in the name brand products. I have included the recipe below if youd like to give it a try.

We also use rice milk , but, much less often. I find rice milk to be better for cooking as opposed to baking, such as for making dairy free mashed potatoes.
