Deadly toxins can contaminate a sugar solution rather quickly in very warm weatheras fast as 24 hoursespecially if the feeder receives some sunlight. Hummingbirds may become ill and even die from feeding at unattended feeders. And I dont even want to think about a mother hummingbirds nestlings who might starve to death after shes been sickened by fermented sugar water thats rich in mold and bacteria. So if you cannot keep your feeder fresh and clean, please dont feed them via artificial feeders.
Real flowers are bestTo avoid all these potential dangers, I strongly recommend growing plants that provide natural nectar which contains micronutrients, unlike refined sugar. Besides the nutrition and safety of real nectar, you wont have to deal with unwelcome insects at feeders. What a great question! Especially at this time of the year when the Hummingbirds are flitting all over my garden.
Heres some rules of thumb when filling your hummingbird feeders:
- DO NOT use that red-dyed hummingbird food you can get in the supermarket or garden store. It is thought to cause harm to both humans and hummingbirds and its just not worth risking that. Besides, it makes no difference in attracting hummingbirds and its expensive.
- DO NOT use honey to make nectar for hummingbirds. Honey ferments and causes a deadly bacterium in hummingbirds.
- Table sugar most closely resembles the nectar found in flowers. This is the feeding method of choice by every hummingbird researcher I know.
- It is very important to clean your feeders out frequently in the summer heat. The nectar can spoil in the heat and cause illness for the hummingbirds. Aim for every other day.
To make nectar for hummingbirds, mix table sugar with water in a 4 to 1 ratio. For example, 1 cup water to 1/4 cup sugar, or 4 cups water to 1 cup sugar.

How Do Hummingbirds Eat

Hummingbirds have evolved a highly dependent relationship with the local flowers in their ecosystem. Their bills are specially shaped so they can scoop nectar directly out of the base of the flower. Some beaks are so strange and exaggerated in their curvature that they could have only adapted for a specific type of flower. Most of the flowers that they frequent are normally colored in some shade of red, orange, or pink to provide a visual cue . Hummingbirds are very good at assessing the sugar content of nectar and will reject any flower that does not meet their high standard. When they drink, the hummingbird will open its bill slightly and lap up the liquid with its narrow tongue. The nectar is so important to the birds survival that it will sometimes protect its food source from intruders.

Prepare Your Sugar Water
Now youre all set up, you can get to work on your sugar water. There are many recipes out there but you must use the right sugar. The best sugars to use are cane sugar or beet sugar, as they contain about the same amount of sucrose as nectar from flowers. If you make your sugar water too sweet or not sweet enough it may not attract the hummingbirds. Dont use honey, raw sugar, corn syrup molasses, brown sugar or artificial sweeteners.
Use 1 cup of sugar to 3-4 cups of water. If you have spring water, use this, though tap water is just fine. Mix the two together in a pan and bring to the boil. Remove the pan from the heat as soon as it boils and stir until all of the sugar has been dissolved. If you leave it boiling for too long some of the water will boil off and the mixture may become too syrupy.
Cover the mixture while it cools. You can then pour it in to a storage bottle, as it will keep for up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator.
Some recipes say to add red food coloring, but this can be harmful to the birds. Its best to tie a red ribbon to the outside of the feeder, but they should be attracted to your lovely fresh nectar.
