Vitamin C Found To Help Type 2
A new study from Deakin University has found that taking 500mg of vitamin C twice daily can help those with type 2 diabetes by lowering elevated blood sugar levels across the day and minimising spikes in blood sugar after meals.
The randomised cross-over study, recently published in the journal Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, also found vitamin C lowered blood pressure in people with type 2 diabetes, suggesting benefits for heart health too.
Lead researcher Associate Professor Glenn Wadley, from Deakins Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition, said the results may help the 1.2 million Australians currently living with type 2 diabetes.
We found that participants had a significant 36 per cent drop in the blood sugar spike after meals. This also meant that they spent almost three hours less per day living in a state of hyperglycaemia, Associate Professor Wadley said.
This is extremely positive news as hyperglycaemia is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease in people living with type 2 diabetes.
We also found that the proportion of people with hypertension halved after taking the vitamin C capsules, with both their systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels dropping significantly.
Associate Professor Wadley said the dose of vitamin C used in the study was about 10 times the normal dietary intake and readily available from most health food stores.
This study was funded by a grant awarded by the Diabetes Australia Research Trust.

First, science tells us it is possible to reverse type II diabetes even if theres no cure for type II diabetes. By following a very low-calorie diet for several months, you could kickstart your pancreass production of insulin and avoid most symptoms of type II diabetes. As WebMD explains, multiple studies have found that following aliquid diet of 625 to 850 calories per day for 2 to 5 months effectively reversed diabetes in participants.
In this 2019 study, for example, researchers found that it was possible to reverse type II diabetes using bariatric surgery, low-calorie diets, or carbohydrate restriction. By restricting carb intake, significantly reducing calorie consumption, and restricting your diet in other ways, you may be able to reverse symptoms of type II diabetes. However, theres no evidence that simply taking a supplement can reverse or revoke your type II diabetes.
Cinnamon bark has been shown to help people with diabetes in some studies. As explained by Diabetes Journal, for example, taking 1g, 3g, or 6g of cinnamon extract per day reduces serum glucose, triglyceride, LDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol in people with type II diabetes.

How Dietary Supplements May Help Control Diabetes
So far, there is not enough research to support specific recommendations for diabetes and dietary supplements. Ongoing studies point to two minerals that may be linked to blood sugar control.
- Magnesium is needed to help the body use glucose effectively. But more research is needed to see if taking a magnesium supplement will help control blood sugar levels in people who are not magnesium deficient. Currently, there are no recommendations for its use in diabetes management.
- Magnesium levels are often low in people who have problems with insulin secretion and in people with complications of type 2 diabetes. Whether magnesium dietary supplements can help relieve or reduce these problems is still unknown.

What Is High Blood Pressure
Arteries are naturally flexible and smooth, which allows blood to easily move throughout the body. High blood pressure creates extra force against the artery walls, which damages the lining of the arteries. As they become narrower and harder, this restricts blood flow, and when blood flow is lowered, the heart has to work harder to pump it through the body, which only makes the problem worse.
Healthy blood pressure is any reading under 120/80 mm Hg, where the top number represents the blood pressure level when heart beats and the lower number represents the blood pressure level in between beats. Anything over 120/80 is considered high, and you are considered to be at a very high risk if your reading is over 140/90.

No study has ever examined the effect of vitamin C with metformin on fasting and postmeal blood glucose as well as glycosylated hemoglobin in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus . The goal was to examine the effect of oral vitamin C with metformin on FBS, PMBG, HbA1c, and plasma ascorbic acid level with type 2 DM. Seventy patients with type 2 DM participated in a prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 12-week study. The patients with type 2 DM were divided randomly into placebo and vitamin C group of 35 each. Both groups received the treatment for twelve weeks. Decreased PAA levels were found in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This level was reversed significantly after treatment with vitamin C along with metformin compared to placebo with metformin. FBS, PMBG, and HbA1c levels showed significant improvement after 12 weeks of treatment with vitamin C. In conclusion, oral supplementation of vitamin C with metformin reverses ascorbic acid levels, reduces FBS, PMBG, and improves HbA1c. Hence, both the drugs in combination may be used in the treatment of type 2 DM to maintain good glycemic control.
