Keep Your Meter And Supplies With You
Before checking your blood sugar levels, make sure you have a blood glucose meter and other supplies with you such as:
- A blood glucose monitor
- A finger-stick device such as a lancet for pricking your finger
- An alcohol swab to clean and sterilize the site of puncture
- A bandage in case bleeding persists beyond a few drops
Depending on the type of blood sugar test you want to perform, whether fasting or post-lunch, you will have to adjust your meal schedule accordingly.
For example if you plan to check your fasting blood sugar in the morning, have your dinner at least 10 hours before the intended time of your breakfast or the test. So, if you usually have breakfast at 6 am, have dinner at around 8 pm the earlier night so that you can check your fasting blood glucose in the morning before breakfast.
Similarly, you can check your post-lunch blood sugar after about 2 hours of having lunch.
How Do I Record My Blood Sugar Test Results
Keep good records of any blood, urine, or ketone tests you do. Most glucose monitors also have a memory. Your records can alert you to any problems or trends. These test records help your doctor make any needed changes in your meal plan, medicine, or exercise program. Bring these records with you every time you see your doctor.

Wheres The Health Benefit In This
Is there any evidence of benefit if people without diabetes monitor their blood sugar levels with CGMs? Theres little published research to help answer this question.
The best study I could find found nothing particularly surprising: among 153 people who didnt have diabetes, about 96% of the time blood sugar levels were normal or nearly so. In fact, many of the abnormal levels were considered implausible or a mistake. Another small study looked at sedentary individuals without diabetes who were overweight or obese. Participants completed a counseling session about the effects of physical activity on blood sugar and used a CGM device and an activity tracker for 10 days. Afterward, they reported feeling more motivated to exercise.
But I could find no published study suggesting that monitoring translates into improved health. Well, wait: one maker of a CGM device posted a study on its website reporting better blood sugar results among healthy people using their product. However, the study wasnt published in a peer-reviewed medical journal, it lacked details that would allow critical evaluation, and it examined what seem to be arbitrary ranges of blood sugar values, not actual health outcomes such as heart disease, nerve damage, or hospitalizations.
How To Use A Blood Sugar Meter
There are different kinds of meters, but most of them work the same way. Ask your health care team to show you the benefits of each. In addition to you, have someone else learn how to use your meter in case youre sick and cant check your blood sugar yourself.
Below are tips for how to use a blood sugar meter.

What Causes Blood Sugar To Be High
Many things can cause high blood sugar , including being sick, being stressed, eating more than planned, and not giving yourself enough insulin. Over time, high blood sugar can lead to long-term, serious health problems. Symptoms of high blood sugar include:
- Feeling very tired.
- Having blurry vision.
- Needing to urinate more often.
If you get sick, your blood sugar can be hard to manage. You may not be able to eat or drink as much as usual, which can affect blood sugar levels. If youre ill and your blood sugar is 240 mg/dL or above, use an over-the-counter ketone test kit to check your urine for ketones and call your doctor if your ketones are high. High ketones can be an early sign of diabetic ketoacidosis, which is a medical emergency and needs to be treated immediately.
What Do My Results Mean
When you finish the blood sugar check, write down your results and note what factors may have affected them, such as food, activity, and stress. Take a close look at your blood glucose record to see if your level is too high or too low several days in a row at about the same time. If the same thing keeps happening, it might be time to change your diabetes care plan. Work with your doctor or diabetes educator to learn what your results mean for you. It can take time to make adjustments and get things just right. And do ask your doctor if you should report results out of a certain range right away by phone.
Keep in mind that blood glucose results often trigger strong feelings. Blood sugar numbers can leave you upset, confused, frustrated, angry, or down. It’s easy to use the numbers to judge yourself. Remind yourself that tracking your blood sugar level is simply a way to know how well your diabetes care plan is working, and whether that plan may need to change.

This allows diabetes patients to download their historical blood sugar readings to their personal computers for detailed analysis.
4. Batteries Check the charging life of the batteries and the type of batteries required. Some monitors use batteries that are readily available in most stores whereas others use batteries that are only available in specific places.

Best Wearable Glucose Monitors
A wearable blood glucose monitor or a CGM is capable of measuring blood sugar levels using sensors. Dexcom CGM system is one of the best wearable glucose monitors that measure blood glucose levels 24 hours a day. It is a CGM that consists of a tiny sensor that measures glucose level, a transmitter that transmits data to the display device, and a smart device that displays real-time information. The sensor tracks the glucose level in your interstitial fluid and the sensor is capable of testing the level of blood sugar every few minutes. The sensors present in a continuous glucose monitor can change the tracked information into electrical signals and can display it.

Pondering Over How Does Cgm System Work
In order to make a CGM system work, you need to insert a tiny sensor beneath your skin, on your arm or abdomen usually. The sensor then performs the measurement of your levels of interstitial glucose. Adding to it, the sensor performs testing of your glucose every few minutes. To a monitor, a transmitter relays the information wirelessly.
Possibly, the monitor is a separate devices part such as a smartwatch or an insulin pump. Other than this, some CGMs directly send information to a tablet or smartphone as well.

How Meds Impact Blood Sugar Testing
Its important to check blood sugar more frequently if your physician changes your diabetes medications or if youre prescribed other medications, including steroids and certain antibiotics, which can affect blood sugar, notes Wolf. Depending on the drug, it can do wonky things to your blood sugar soon after taking it, sometimes within a few hours. For example, glucocorticoids such as prednisone can cause hyperglycemia via multiple mechanisms, adds Dr. Kohlenberg. His advice: Anytime you start a new medication, review it with your physician to see if this will impact your glucose and diabetes treatment plan.

How To Check Blood Sugar Levels
Blood sugar levels are checked by using a blood glucose meter, which is available from any pharmacy. The meter uses a strip, which is inserted into the meter once youve placed a drop of blood on it the blood should be taken from your finger using a lancet
Types Of Glucose Meters
There are two types of glucose metersstandard and continuous. Our ranking only analyzed standard glucose meters, which can be a good fit for people who dont require frequent testing or insulin injections. These types of meters measure current blood glucose by using a finger stick blood sample placed on a test strip and inserted into the device.
Meanwhile, continuous glucose monitors work by wearing a sensor placed under the skin that measures glucose levels in real time. People who might benefit from a CGM include those with type 1 diabetes, people who require tight blood sugar control or dont experience warning signs of low blood glucose and those who have frequent high or low levels. CGMs dont require as many finger sticks, and as of July 2022, Medicare permanently eliminated the requirement of a four-time daily finger stick to qualify for CGM coverage.
Talk to your doctor about which type of glucose meter is best for you and your needs.
