Keeping It As Natural As Possible

  • I am not aware of any scientific evidence yet, but surely their own honey has got to be better than feeding them with refined sugar. Leave the bees with enough honey to last them through the year. This means leaving your 14×12, brood and a half or double brood box well alone and not be tempted to harvest honey from it
  • The best way to guarantee that bees have enough pollen is to ensure there are adequate and round-the-year pollen-bearing plants close to the hives
  • Ensure that the bees have access to a clean water supply
  • However, there will be times when you will need to feed your bees and possibly use enhancers to boost colony health and size and honey production. Sugarbee Causes A Buzz

What began as a seed of desire to follow in his fathers and grandfathers footsteps has led Chuck Nystrom to find a new apple variety that may become the next big winner for apple growers and consumers alike.

The apple, originally named the B51, was found by Nystrom in the early 90s and is gaining ground in the development and testing phases to becoming commercially available.

Only God creates it I found it, Nystrom said of the apple now being marketed as SugarBee exclusively through Chelan Fresh in Washington state. I plant the seeds and take care of them.

Nystrom, owner and manager of Ocheda Orchard in Worthington, Minnesota, has known apples his entire life. As a young child he spent time at his grandfathers orchard nearby.

Then when his father, Donald Nystrom, decided to branch out and start his very own orchard, Chuck was right there alongside him in the endeavor.

In 1965 my dad planted the first trees, said Nystrom, 65. I skipped school to help him plant.

He said those first trees were the traditional apples grown in Minnesota the Minnesota standbys, as he calls them. Though he doesnt remember what exactly they planted, he does remember planting Fireside and the sport Connell Red, in particular.

It was at an apple grower tour/meeting in the mid-1980s that Nystrom met and began talking to a fellow orchardist, Doug Shefelbine, who highly recommended getting involved in an organization that encouraged developing new varieties.

    Coxs Orange Pippin Apple

Coxs Orange Pippin is a British heirloom apple variety with a complex fruity sweet flavor. This apple is delicious in its own right but is also known as a parent apple to many popular modern varieties. While it used to be difficult to find in North America, Coxs apple is becoming more and more common, especially along the East Coast.

Don’t Miss: Why Is Sugar Bad For You

Produces Tons Of Delicious Sweet And Creamy Fruit

The Sugar Apple tree, also known as the ‘annona squamosal’, is a unique tropical tree that’s the clear winner amongst its competition because it produces a distinctive fruit with an individual look and tropical flavor that blows people away.

Sugar apples taste like a sweet vanilla custard with a hint of pineapple. Its smooth and slightly grainy texture makes this fruit a delight to snack on. While most Sugar Apples are eaten fresh, they can also be used in desserts and for making juices.

Sugar Apples, often referred to as ‘sweetsops’, have a unique shape, similar to a heart and light green skin that’s divided up into sections. Its conical nature causes the fruit to look like a green pinecone at first, but since the fruit is split among different sections it’s very easy to split apart and eat fresh, right off the tree.

Once you pull your Sugar Apple apart you’ll find soft and creamy flesh on the inside that’s divided into sections. Simply pick out the white flesh sections one by one and eat them for a rush of rich tropical flavors.

You don’t have to live without Sugar Apple trees, because they will grow anywhere. They’ll give your landscape a lush tropical feel if planted in the ground, and they also thrive in containers. They can be placed around porches, patios, and inside any room to liven it up with their long and slender exotic leaves.

How Is A Sugar Bee Different Than A Honeycrisp Apple

    Adam

Appearance wise the two apples look a lot a like. I bet the majority of people could not tell them apart. This similar appearance I believe gives them a leg up in marketing the apple. People already love a similar looking apple.

I found the Sugar Bee apple to have a thinner skin than the Honeycrisp. Sugar Bee is more sweet. As far as crispiness, the Sugar Bee is a pretty crisp apple. I don’t think it quite has that same bite as Honeycrisp, but to be honest I think Honeycrisp can be too crisp at times and I simply get tired of eating one, particularly when they are large Honeycrisp.

The big advantage Sugar Bee has over it’s parent is that the quality of the apple lasts longer. Honeycrisp are pretty much available year round now but they aren’t that good after a few months. Once you get winter, the flavor is muted. In a head to head competition between a Sugar Bee and a Honeycrisp done right now, I would bet my money on Sugar Bee being the better apple to eat in January.

My daughter was really excited about Sugar Bee apples. She really loved them and was begging for more.

Where To Buy Sugar Bee Apples

As of now Sugar Bee apples are not going to be easy to track down. I was lucky to spot them at a small, upscale grocery chain called Plum Market in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I have heard of them making appearances at Walmart and Whole Foods Market. Chelan Fresh expect a bigger commercial supply in 2019 as more trees come into production.

    Feeding Bees In Autumn

If you harvest your honey in late July or early August, this gives the bees the opportunity to make their own winter stores.

Earlier feeding tends to be converted into brood so unless there is a risk of starvation wait until September.

I fed my bees too late when I found they had starved by the 18th September: link to story below. My lesson was that I need to read the comb better and feed in preference to using Apiguard if required. I think this is more likely with a new colony as opposed to an established one.

An average honeybee colony requires about 20 kg of stores. A British Standard brood frame, when full of honey contains about 2.5 kg so assess the existing colony stores and feed the required balance using sugar syrup. A 14×12 frames contains about 3.75Kg. Hence you need 8 frames of honey.

Feeding at the time of some varroacide applications, usually those containing essential oils, is discouraged as this may increase robbing risks.

Note: 1Kg of sugar will create 1.25Kg of stores in the brood box.
