How Can I Improve Sugar Free Gummy Bears
I’m a diabetic but I love gummy bears, I don’t mind cooking and thought I’d see what I could find in terms of gummy bear recipes.
Also, let it be known, I’m alright accepting that this just may not be possible
Anyway, I found this recipe and proceeded to give it a shot with Crystal light. It turned out pretty good actually, but I felt the gummy wasn’t chewy enough so I tried again with more gelatin . This helped keep them firmer but now they’re almost more springy than chewy, if that makes any sense.
I’m just curious if anyone here knows of anything I can try to add while still attempting to keep the sugars relatively low. I’ve tried adding 1tbsp of golden corn syrup to see if that added any chew but it didn’t do much, granted 1tbsp in a half a cup of water may have just been too little.
Anyway, any suggestions would be cool, even if it’s just to learn a bit more about the chemistry behind it. I have done some searching and from what I can see, it sounds like maybe adding some pectin might help? This is all just a fun journey for me and I like experimenting with cooking so I thought I’d make a post and see if anyone else had any interest 🙂
Thanks for reading this far and for any input you can provide 😀

Keto Friendly Gummy Bears: They Exist
We recently discovered that Tapioca Fiber is HIGHLY glycemic and no longer recommend the below Eat Smart Sweet gummies for a keto or diabetic diet . Please read more about this fiber on our latest post here.
Currently, we havent found a keto friendly gummy bear that doesnt use maltitol or tapioca fiber.
In our never-ending quest for the best low carb candy, we have discovered a great option for keto friendly gummy bears!
There are a bunch of sugar-free gummy bear varieties out there, but basically, every single product we could find was sweetened with maltitol.
Whats maltitol, you ask?
Its a sugar alcohol that is widely used as a sugar alternative. Maltitol is about as sweet as sugar but does not spike your blood glucose levels as much as real sugar does.
Another thing that maltitol is good at? Its great at attracting water. And when youve eaten a lot of maltitol, that water gets sucked into your digestive system. And that, my friends, is why if you arent careful, you can experience a power wash of your intestines. Not very pleasant.
The solution? Luckily we found some keto and low carb gummy bears that solve these issues.

Can You Buy Sugar Free Gummies
There are a few brands that carry sugar free, low-carb gummies. However, I havent found any that dont cause digestive issues for me.
Smart Sweets is one of the most popular. They sell bears, sweet fish gummies, peach rings, and more. But the fiber sweetener used in them is known to impact blood sugar levels so I dont recommend them.
Other brands use maltitol which isnt keto friendly. Thats why I prefer to use my sugar-free gummy bears recipe. It doesnt have any impacting carbs and is very budget friendly.

What Happens If You Eat Too Many Sugar Free Gummy Bears
The problem with sugar free gummy bears has has to do with something called maltitol.
Maltitol, or maltitol syrup, is a sugar substitute thats often used as the main sweetener in all sorts of sugarless keto candy, gums, jams, ice creams, and more.
You might also see the ingredient Lycasin on sugar-free products, which is just a trademarked maltitol syrup.
The good news is that maltitol has a lower glycemic index than sugar , which causes a lower impact on blood sugar. Thats why mannitol is so commonly used in diabetes-friendly food products.
It also has a low absorbability rate, hovering around 45%, according to the consensus of numerous nutrition organizations including the American Diabetes Association.
That comes out to about 2.7 calories per gram.
The trick with maltitol is that if you eat too much it tends to have a laxative effect.
So If You Try Any Of The Sugar Free Gummy Bears Form This List Make It Lilys
As someone who can normally eat anything without any negative effects, heed my warning: those other gummies will mess you up.
This seems to be one of those cases where the phrase everything in moderation really rings true! While everyone said these gummies are all delicious, you cant eat them with wild abandon and not expect to suffer some gastrointestinal consequences. Even if the other gummies are keto-friendly, its probably best to stick to the serving size or less until you figure out how your body reacts.

What Are The Ingredients In Sugar
The recipe only requires four basic ingredients. Who knew making gummy bears at home was this easy?
- Unflavored Gelatin The key to getting that lovely gummy texture is to use a LOT of gelatin. Im talking three packages of gelatin to half a cup of water!
- Stevia Powder Any sweetener works. Adjust the amount to suit your taste.
- Soft Drink Mix I use Kool-Aid®, but sugar-free Jell-O® works really well, too. Use your favorite flavor! Ive tried this recipe with lime, orange, raspberry, and pineapple, and they all turned out amazing.
- Cold Water For dissolving the gelatin and soft drink mix in. If you dont want to use a soft drink mix, replace water with real fruit juice or brewed fruit tea.

Next, boil some water in a saucepan. You dont want to fill up the whole pan with water just halfway is fine.
Pour cold water and gelatin powder into a heat-proof container, such as a glass measuring cup.
It should have a smaller circumference than the saucepan because youll be submerging it in the boiling water to heat the gelatin mixture.
It should also be tall enough so that the water from the saucepan wont get in.
Stir the mixture well until the gelatin is dissolved in the water.
Add in the sweetener and soft drink mix and stir until combined. I used Stevia and Kool-Aid for this recipe.
Place the container in the boiling water. Stir the mixture well until it turns syrupy.
Remove the mixture from heat. Fill the wells of the silicone molds with the mixture using a dropper or a syringe.
Let the molds chill in the fridge for an hour, or until the gummies are firm.
You can also freeze them cut the waiting period short to about 15 to 20 minutes.
Pop them out of the molds and voila!

Gummy Bears In History
German candy maker Hans Riegal first created Dancing Bears in 1922 as the company Haribo, which was an acronym for his full name, Hangs Riegal Bonn. The name was soon changed and, in 1982, gummy bears were imported to the US by the Herman Goelitz company . If you want to visit a Haribo gummy bear factory in the US, youre out of luck!
