Sugar Beach Maui: Everything You Need To Know
Sugar Beach is a quiet, lesser-visited shoreline on the north end of Kihei. It is also the longest continuous stretch of sand in all of Maui, extending 2.5 miles from North Kihei to Haycraft Park.
The open space and lack of crowds make Sugar Beach the perfect place for an extended walk on the beach. Just be sure to wear beach shoes as the Kiawe trees that line its shores produce an extremely sharp thorn known for puncturing flip flops.

DESCRIPTION
Sugar Beach is hidden behind a few small resorts on the north end of Kihei. It extends 2.5 miles, making it the longest continuous stretch of sand on Maui.
Palm and Kiawe trees line the faded-golden shore. While the palms provide a tropical, aloha vibe, the Kiawes present a painful danger. These invasive pests yield an extremely sharp thorn known for puncturing thin-soled flip flops. Be extra mindful the further you journey north and ensure you have some beach shoes!

What Water Activities Are At Sugar Beach
Sugar Beach is nestled on Maalaea Bay, on Mauis longest stretch of uninterrupted shoreline. Its the perfect spot for swimming, snorkeling, windsurfing, kayaking, canoe paddling, or just relaxing.
The sunsets are famous and its a great place to watch for whales or swim with green sea turtles.

Maui Pie in Kihei next door to the post office has all kinds of amazing pies. Try Chicken Pot pie, Mango Strawberry and Coconut Cream. And all the rest! This friendly and clean place is a delight!
Cafe OLei in South Kihei is a must! Fresh local greens, in house made dressings, fish melting in the mouth, great sushi, excellent coffee, and the prices are reasonable.
Longs Drugs is a great place to buy gifts. We cant recommend Hana Bay Rum, unfortunately, as it is neither produced nor distilled in Hawaii.
Eskimo Candy is the place for fresh local fish, assorted poke and plate lunches.
Koiso Sushi Bar in Dolphin Plaza is a spot for people who are interested in the traditional, simple Japanese-style pleasures. This is a tiny and very personal place, where you can closely observe the magical work of Master Chef Hiroaki Kudo.

Saltwater Swimming Pool Beach Access Sandwich Shop As Well As Access To A Beautiful Beach
In between the two towers that house the condos at Sugar Beach Resort is a saltwater swimming pool with a hot tub and a barbecue area. There’s also a convenience store selling sunscreen, snacks, and souvenirs as well as a gift shop, a massage clinic, and a bridal shop on-site. Dinas Sandwitch Eatery serves sandwiches, snacks, and cocktails at lunch and dinner. The property looks out over Sugar Beach, which is popular with green sea turtles and humpback whales can be spotted from the waters of Maalaea Bay during whale season. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, though past guests have complained about spotty service.

Swimming Snorkeling And Boating
The beachfront supplies a popular swimming location. This section of the coast does not maintain a lifeguard station. The length of the beach permits visitors to spread out and enjoy the water in relatively uncrowded conditions. The ocean in this area sometimes grows murky due to coastal erosion. Nevertheless, beachgoers often snorkel or scuba dive here, too. Since many boats depart from nearby Maalaea Harbor and travel through these waters, snorkelers and freedivers frequently carry flags to mark their locations in the water. Two local canoe clubs regularly use this beach. One of them conducts weekly rowing excursions to Molokini several miles away. A Popular Local Beach
Kenolio Park stands just across the street from the southern tip of this beachfront. The northern extremity of this long strip of fine golden-brown sand reaches into the southern outskirts of Ma’alaea. The shoreline in this location curves around a significant portion of Ma’alaea Bay. For those that live in places like or , going to Sugar Beach is as easy as walking across the street. Visitors discover restrooms and picnic grounds at Kenolio Park in Kihei. Although several small beach parks adjoin this popular waterfront , most of them lack extensive facilities. Beachgoers discover a number of parking locations directly off North Kihei Road. The offshore terrain along this broad stretch of shoreline consists mainly of soft sand, with a few rocky outcroppings. Some sections of the beachfront include shallow tidal pools.

Also right next to the beach is Sugar Beach Resort, the easiest place to stay for beach access. The resort is a few minutes walk from Whalers Village, an outdoor shopping center with restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues.
Its nine miles away from the Kahului Airport and 25 miles from Maalaea Harbour. Its idyllic for honeymooners who want to have a secluded beach vacation. The rooms are located in a beachfront home, and some even have private pools or hot tubs.
How Safe Is Sugar Beach Maui
As far as beaches, Sugar Beach is as safe as it gets, except you should know that there are no lifeguards on Maui.
Still Sugar Beach is a safe place for kids to roam and enjoy splashing in the water. Its also such a long beach that it doesnt get too crowded, so its great for family walks along the beach.
There are usually parts of Sugar Beach that are less populated after sunset, so it is recommended that you stick to the more crowded areas while you are walking by yourself.

How To Get To Sugar Beach
There are many access points for Sugar Beach along North and South Kihei Road.
With Navigation: Enter 61 N Kihei Rd into your navigation. Near here you will find a small parking lot for around 10 cars. If this lot is full, head south along South Kihei Road or north along North Kihei Road, where you will find some streetside parking.
General Directions: Heading north from Kihei follow S Kihei Road until you reach Kihei Canoe Club . Here there will be some roadside parking on the left. Or continue on until you see the green sign for Beach Access and turn left to remain on S Kihei Road. Here you will find some additional parking.

An Important Role In Kihei’s History
The remains of a wharf constructed in 1899 stand close to the southern portion of the beach. Reportedly, the site at one time served as a commercial dock for ships carrying agricultural exports. Today, a plaque commemorates the historic significance of the wharf. A short distance to the north, the beach passes close to Kealia Pond, an important environmental site today. This wetlands location plays a significant role in the ecology of the beachfront. Just a short distance inland, people access a boardwalk directly overlooking the pond to view birds and other wildlife.

The Sugar Beach Pier And Outrigger Catamarans
Sugar Beach takes its name from the wharf that was built on it in 1899 to service Henry Baldwin’s newly established Kihei Sugar Plantation. The remnants of the pier can still be seen today but in years past this was the site of the beginning of the bustling Kihei Town which began at this very site. Ah Sue opened a Chinese general store across the street and boats crowded along the wharf as the age of sugar on the island was heading toward its heyday. Over a hundred years later the commercial center that was started by Henry Baldwin has now extended to form the towns of Kihei, Wailea and Makena which expand miles to the south. In the photo above you can see the original pier and also a number of outrigger canoes in the foreground as this is the location used by the Kihei Canoe Club for its practice and is also used as the race course for competition against other island clubs on numerous Saturdays throughout the year.

Each of the 214 units at the Sugar Beach Resort is individually owned and, as such, decor and in-room amenities varies greatly. All come with kitchens and balconies flat-screen TVs and DVD players are standard to most rooms. Some have additional features such as washer/dryers. Potential guests book specific rooms rather than room types, so they know what they are getting ahead of time . Wi-Fi is free. ADA-accessible rooms are not available. Some guests have raised questions about the quality of the maintenance of the units.
