Ingredients: Organic Grade A Lowfat Milk, Organic Cane Sugar, Organic Cocoa , Organic Cocoa, Gellan Gum, Organic Vanilla Extract, Salt, Vitamin A Palmitate, Vitamin D3.
We applaud Horizon for its squeaky-clean ingredient list and its use of organic ingredients, from the milk to the sugar and the cocoa. The quality of the ingredients definitely reflected in the flavor, as the milk was tasty and satisfying. In fact, our taste testers agreed that the drink tasted just like chocolate pudding. However, the thin consistency is where this pick fell through.
Its Better For The Environment
The dairy industry has become an ecological disaster. Animal agriculture is responsible for 83% of total global agricultural land, yet produces only 18% of the worlds calories. Its a leading driver behind the destruction of tropical rainforests. And cows are huge contributors to climate change. The methane they release is 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide in warming the atmosphere.
Dairy also uses a lot of water. Factoring in the amount needed to feed and raise cows, it takes 976 gallons of water to produce one gallon of milk.
Q What Is The Healthiest Milk
Answer: Milk is considered healthy as it contains enough amounts of vitamins, essential fatty acids, proteins, and more nutrients. All forms of milk are created differently. Nutritional differences are vast. Different milk options present a variety of health advantages such as boosting your antioxidant intake. For lactose intolerance people, plant-based milk like almond is the best option. However, remember this will reduce protein and riboflavin intake. These nutrients are important to the body. While its not safe to drink raw milk, heating tends to compromise some of the essential nutrients in it. Therefore, pasteurized milk is a healthy drink to consider.
A noble strategy can be mixing a variety of them and drink. In that line, you will get nutritional values from each, particularly when you consume them alongside healthy diet plans. Always check labels for ingredients that may present undesirable effects on your health. For instance, people with diabetes should avoid added sugar in milk brands. For underweight people, added sugar is a good occasion. If you are overweight, then added sugar is not a welcome addition

Some Dairy Products Can Raise Insulin Levels
Of the three macronutrients protein, carbs, and fat carbs have been shown to raise blood sugar levels the most, by far.23 And when blood sugar goes up, it triggers your pancreas to release insulin.
Since lactose breaks down to glucose during digestion, consuming high-lactose dairy products can raise both blood sugar and insulin levels.
So if your goals include keeping insulin levels low, its likely best to steer clear of milk, flavored yogurt, and other types of high-lactose dairy.
However, even some keto-friendly dairy foods, such as cheese, also raise insulin levels somewhat. In this case, its not the carbs but the protein or more specifically, amino acids that cause insulin to rise.
Why does this happen? During digestion, protein is broken down into individual amino acids, which are absorbed into your bloodstream. This prompts your pancreas to release insulin, which helps the amino acids get into your muscles.
In fact, this happens with all protein foods, although to a greater extent with some than others. For instance, hard cheese raises insulin more than eggs but less than fish and beef. Yet all four of these protein foods raise insulin far less than carb-containing foods.24
Additionally, the whey protein in dairy is absorbed more rapidly than the casein.25 Therefore, consuming whey-containing dairy products may raise blood insulin levels more quickly than fermented dairy products that no longer contain whey.26
Condensed And Evaporated Milk
These milks are used to sweeten hot and cold drinks, and have traditionally been added to desserts instead of cream or custard. Where 50ml of semi-skimmed milk would contain only 25kcal and 0.85g fat, regular condensed milk offers 161kcal and 4g fat. Choosing a semi-skimmed version could therefore provide an impressive saving.
Both are high in calories, and the original versions are high in fat.

What Are The Basics Of Cow Milk
The USDA recommends about three cups of milk a day for adults and children age 9 and older to help meet daily dietary needs for nutrients such as bone-strengthening calcium and vitamin D. But what type of cow’s milk is best for you? It depends on what you want and need in your diet.
Nearly every store carries whole, reduced-fat and skim milk, but some might not know what those terms really mean. When milk is processed, different levels of fat can be taken out .
- Whole milk is cows milk that hasnt had its fat content stripped. The milk retains its fat and is slightly thick.
- Reduced-fat milk retains 2 percent of fat.
- Skim milk, contains no fat at all. This processing lowers calories and slightly alters the milk’s taste.
Reduced-fat and skim milk lose nutritional benefits when processed. Most producers then fortify their milk with solids to restore vitamins and thickness, although fortification is controversial. In addition, the practice of giving cows added growth hormones to aid in milk production is also contentious.
Some milk producers have started offering rBST-free milk that comes from grass-fed, free-range cows to address these concerns. According to the Cleveland Clinic, not only do grass-fed cows make milk with significantly more beneficial omega-3 fatty acids, but because they are less stressed than conventionally raised cows, they also tend to produce more milk and richer milk.
What Brand Of Milk Has The Least Sugar And Most Calcium
Generally speaking, plain milks having a lower sugar content compared to flavoured milks. Flavoured milks can range in sugar content and many options are naturally rich or boosted in calcium content.
We are unable to recommend specific brands, but a quick check of the Nutrition Information Panel will reveal the sugar and calcium content.
Plain milk contains, on average, about 5g/100mL of naturally occurring sugar . Plain milk has no added sugar and are therefore lower in total sugar compared with flavoured milks. Its important to remember that when you read the label of a plain milk carton and see sugars that this is referring to the naturally occurring lactose sugar in milk. For this reason, lactose free milks will have lower figures in the sugars column.
Like plain milk, flavoured milk provides important nutrients to the diet. A range of flavoured milk with varying sugar levels are available. Some of these products contain alternative sweeteners, and therefore have a lower sugar content.

What Is The Glycemic Index
The glycemic index, or GI, is a food ranking system that groups carbohydrate-containing foods on a scale of zero to 100 on how they affect blood sugar. Foods that digest quickly and cause a spike in blood sugar are considered high-glycemic foods, greater than 70, while foods that take a bit longer to digest and cause only a blip of an increase in blood sugar are considered low-glycemic foods, 55 or lower. Keeping your blood sugar at a more even level helps keep insulin levels down and may help control hunger. Filling your diet with more low-glycemic foods has health benefits too, including reducing your risk of diabetes and heart disease.
What Are The Benefits Of Cow Milk
Milk provides several key dietary requirements, but the levels of nutrients in each milk type can vary slightly.
Reduced-fat and skim milk retain roughly the same amount of protein as whole milk but lose some of their vitamin content during processing and fat removal. Vitamins A and D, which are fat-soluble, are added back through fortification.
Here is a breakdown of the amount of protein, potassium and calcium found in a single serving of each type of milk.
- Whole milk contains 8 grams of protein, 9 percent of your daily value of potassium, and 27 percent of your daily value of calcium.
- Reduced-fat milk contains 8 grams of protein, 9 percent of your daily value of potassium, and 29 percent of your daily value of calcium.
- Skim milk contains 8 grams of protein, 10 percent of your daily value of potassium, and 29 percent of your daily value of calcium.
Here is a breakdown of the amount of vitamin A and vitamin D found in a single serving of each type of milk.
- Whole milk contains 5 percent of your daily value of vitamin A and 24 percent of your daily value of vitamin D.
- After fortification, reduced-fat milk contains 9 percent of your daily value of vitamin A and 29 percent of your daily value of vitamin D.
- After fortification, skim milk contains 10 percent of your daily value of vitamin A and 25 percent of your daily value of vitamin D.
What Is Rice Milk
Rice milk is made from milled white or brown rice. It’s the least likely of all of milk products to cause allergies, which makes it a good choice for people with allergies to dairy, soy, or nuts.
Rice milk can be fortified to be a good source of calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin D. However, rice milk is high in sugar, carbohydrates and calories and is low in protein.
The Worst Milk Alternatives For Blood Sugar
Not all plant-based milks are created equal. Certain base ingredients are more likely to spike blood sugar:
- Oat milk: Of all the options, oat milk is the worst for blood sugar, says Titgemeier. Even if an oat milk is unsweetened, the nutrition label will list added sugars. Thats because during the manufacturing process, enzymes are added to break down oat starch so the milk is creamy. Because the longer chains of oat carbohydrates are broken down into shorter chains of simple sugar like maltose, it is considered added sugar on a nutrition facts label.
- Rice milk: Oat and rice milk are naturally higher in carbsespecially compared to nut milksbecause the grains themselves have more carbs than nuts. And with 22 grams of carbohydrates and not even 1 gram of fiber or protein per cup, rice milk, even unsweetened, is very likely to trigger a blood sugar surge.

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association, in a joint policy statement, endorsed policies to reduce kids consumption of sugary drinks, which are the primary contributor to added sugars in childrens diets.
Key among the organizations recommendations is that healthy drinks such as water and milk should be the default beverages on children’s menus and in vending machines. The policy statement also states that flavored milks are not considered to be sugary drinks.

Ingredients: Lowfat Milk, Liquid Sugar , Contains Less Than 1% Of Cocoa , Cocoa, Cornstarch, Salt, Carrageenan, Natural Flavor, Vitamin A Palmitate, Vitamin D3.
While the aqueous consistency didn’t live up to our childhood memories, TruMoo wasn’t our least favorite on this list. It’s satisfyingly sweet and exactly what you’d expect from a chocolate milk. However, TruMoo didn’t woo us. The chocolate flavor wasn’t as pronounced as we’d hoped for, and we wished our palates were met with stronger cocoa notes.

Does Skim Milk Contain More Sugar
One of the most common reasons dietitians find people ditch skim milk for full cream milk is that they have heard that skim milk contains more sugar. While its true, the extra sugar is minimal. Ill explain.
When you remove the fat, it means that the other components of the milk will be higher in content. There will be slightly more carbohydrate, protein, sugar and calcium. It is also important to remember the sugar in milk is not added sugar. It is a natural, low glycaemic index sugar, called lactose. Sugar is not added to plain skim milk. Below is a comparison of Dairy Farmers full cream milk and skim milk products per 100ml.
|Component per 100mL|
As you can see, there is 4.8g of sugar in 100ml of full cream milk compared to 4.9g in 100ml of skim. Hardly worth the worry! However, there are more calories in full cream milk due tot the fat: 1 cup has 665kJ compared to 368kJ in skim milk. Although some fat assists the absorption of fat-soluble nutrients such as A, D, E and K and can make us feel more satisfied, drinking large amounts of full cream milk may add to your waist line.
