What Is Dry Wine Anyways
Dry is often misused as a wine descriptor it does not refer to a wine that is drying. A dry wine is on the opposite end of the spectrum to a sweet wine, its a wine with no residual sugar. Per our Maker wine terms glossary, grape juice becomes wine when all the natural sugars from the fruit are eaten up by yeast and converted to alcohol and C02 through a process called fermentation. In a dry wine, fermentation has been allowed to complete fully, and there is no residual sugar left in the wine.
Even more confusingly, just because we perceive a wine as sweet, does not necessarily mean it isnt a dry wine! Ripe fruits and floral notes can create the perception of sweetness even if there is no residual sugar, especially if the wine doesnt have the acidity or tannins to balance that fruitiness.
And what should you call that drying sensation in your mouth with some wines? Fun fact, thats actually caused by tannins, which are naturally occurring compounds from grape seeds and skins.
Which Type Of Wine Has The Lowest Amount Of Sugar
Wine sugar content will vary quite heavily depending on the bottle you purchase and the type of wine you buy.
However, it is accurate to say that white wine has the most amount of sugar, while red wine has the least amount. This lower level has a lot to do with how the wine is manufactured and fermented. The longer a bottle of wine ferments, the less sugar it contains.
Thats because the yeast that produces alcohol eats sugar and leaves behind the alcohol content you find in a wine bottle. Sweeter wines typically have less alcohol because they have not fermented as long and produce less overall alcohol.
As a result, you can get around four to 220 grams of sugar per liter in a single bottle of wine, with red wine having the least amount. It is also worth noting that red wines can also be quite healthy in moderation.
Typically, you get around 0.9 grams of sugar in a 175-milliliter glass of red wine. That amount is much lower than you get from many sweeter white wines.
However, some red wines may contain a higher amount of sugar if theyve been fermented for a shorter amount of time. For instance, a good rosé can have between 35 and 120 grams of sugar per glass, while dessert wine has seven grams.
By contrast, a dry white wine can have around 1.4 grams per 175-milliliter glass.
Again, that will vary depending on the white wines overall sweetness and dryness. Generally speaking, though, red wines that ferment the same time as a white will normally have less sugar.

What Wine Has Low Sugar Content
Dry wines have the lowest sugar content because during the fermentation process the yeast changes almost all of the sugar into alcohol. Both dry red wines and white wines have residual sugar levels of about 0.1-0.3% which is about 1-3 grams of sugar per liter of wine. Most common red and many white wines are considered dry.

Do Organic Wines Have Less Sulfites
Organic wines made in the United States have no added sulfites. For wines that are made with organic grapes, sulfur dioxide may be added to yield fewer than 100 ppm . Fermented alcoholic beverages made in the United States often have sulfites added to prevent oxidation of wine, beer and other alcoholic beverages. Foods that are not processed have less sulfites than foods that are processed with sulfur dioxide. Natural wines in the United States may contain up to 10ppm of sulfur dioxide. Any wines that contain more than 10ppm requires labeling so make sure to check those labels.
Organic wines also have less additives, so theyre a great source if youre looking for lower sulfite wines!
The Different Levels Of Sugar In Wine
When it comes to sugar content, not all wines are created equal. In general, dry red wines tend to have the lowest sugar levels, while late harvest wines are on the opposite end of the spectrum with higher sugar levels. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule. Some red wines may have a touch of sweetness, while some white wines may be on the drier side. It all depends on the grapes used and the winemaking process.

The sugar in wine varies depending on whether youre sipping on a dry or sweet wine, but most conventional wines dont have that much residual sugar.

While wine contains carbs like many grape derived products, your body processes them differently than non-alcohol containing beverages. If you count carbs, you may be surprised at just how many carbs there are in a glass of wine. Dry Champagne is the lowest carb wine with just 1 gram of carbs per serving, but other dry wines are also reasonably low in carbs as well. Off-dry, semi-sweet, sweet, and sweet wines have progressively higher carb amounts and aren’t compatible with a low-carb lifestyle.

Which Wine Varieties Have The Least Calories
Wine has a reputation for being a sugary alcoholic beverage. Sugar can account for 21 to 72 added calories per serving in sweet wines and 72 to 130 added calories per serving in very sweet wines. Knowing this, the natural tendency would be to opt for the opposite.
A dry wine with dinner should help cut back on calories. Going for a dry wine is a good standard for limiting sugar consumption, but other factors contribute to the total calories in wine. A high alcohol by volume percentage can cause the calorie content to skyrocket.
There is no nutritional value to vodka: 0g sugar, carbs and fat. Vodka is pure alcohol, and yet, one shot of 80 proof vodka contains nearly 100 calories. This is because alcohol actually contains more calories per gram than sugar.
Residual sugar contains only four calories per gram, while alcohol contains seven calories per gram. So, yes. Dry wines do contain less sugar but contain more alcohol as well.
Keeping this in mind, a dry wine that has a high alcohol by volume content will nearly put the same amount of calories in your stomach as a sweet wine that has a low ABV content.
What Is The Lowest
Most wine labels dont list nutrition facts like sugar, carbs, and calories, so it can be tricky to figure out which are considered low-carb or low-sugar wines. A good rule of thumb is to look at the ABV and residual sugar in wine. As either one goes up, so do the calories and carbs, says Josh Fritsche, production winemaker at William Chris Vineyards. Drier wines have less residual sugar then semi- or off-dry, sweet, or very sweet wines. While residual sugar isnt often on the label, you can usually figure out out how much sugar is in wineaka the grams of residual sugaron a wines tech sheet by doing a little research first.
Keeping that in mind, sweeter white wines like rieslings and moscatos are out of the question if youre going keto or just looking for low-carb wines, as are cabernet, grenache, and shiraz for reds. Varieties like Oregon pinot noir and French or Italian white wines can help you minimize carbs without sacrificing taste, says Adam Sweders, wine director for DineAmic Group in Chicago.
Its worth noting that alcohol is really in its own nutrient category, though, and isnt really a fat, carb, or protein, says Jae Berman, M.S., R.D.N., who works with wine app Vivino. While alcohols come from carbohydrate sources such as potatoes, grains, and grapes, theyre metabolized differently than a carb because of that ethanol molecule, she says.

Can You Drink Wine On The Keto Diet
For anyone on the keto diet, the question of how much wine is okay to drink actually becomes one of whether its okay to drink wine at all.
You might be able to drink wine on a ketogenic diet, but even small amounts may be enough to bump you out of nutritional ketosis, explains Paul Kriegler, RD, an assistant program manager at Life Time.
While everyone is different in how they metabolically respond to alcohol and any residual sugar in the wine, Kriegler says that, in his experience, people can either follow a strict ketogenic diet or enjoy wine, rarely both concurrently. But it’s not impossible.
If you are looking to find a wine that will stick as closely as possible to your keto diet, though, there are two things to keep in mind, he adds.
First, you want quality over quantity. Look for a well-made, dry wine that youll enjoy one 4 to 6-ounce glass of and be satisfiedprobably not your bargain-priced winesrather than buying for bulk, he says. Second, you should look for a dry wine since those tend to keep the sugar content low.
You can also search for wines, which are specifically sold as “low-sugar wines,” though you should always read the nutrition label to make sure it fits into your diet.
What Kind Of Wine Has The Lowest Sugar
Dry reds often are amongst the lowest sugar content amongst wines and often contain around one gram of sugar per five-ounce pour. Some of these include Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah/Shiraz. Dry whites, which have between one and 1.5 grams of sugar per five ounces such as Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and Viognier.
