How Much Alcohol Should I Drink Daily
It depends. As I mentioned in my post on Is Wine Fattening? for women, it is considered that one drink per day is safe. On the other hand for men, the number of drinks is two per day.
- Beer: 12 fluid ounces
- Wine: 5 fluid ounces
- Distilled spirits : 1.5 fluid ounces
According to the National Institutes of Health, the maximum amount of wine safe for a woman to drink is 4 ounces, and for a man, 8 ounces. Once a man reaches 65, the maximum should be the same as women. Note, there are sites and research documents that cite 5 ounces as a standard size for a glass of wine.
So the bottom line is that you can drink daily as long as its a healthy amount of alcohol. Though, just because you can doesnt mean you should, especially every day.
Soda Contains Empty Calories Which Can Contribute To Weight Gain
Americans obsession with soda is waning, but not everyone is sipping with their health in mind.
According to a study published in November 2017 in Obesity, about 61 percent of children and 50 percent of adults reported drinking soda daily in a 20132014 survey, compared with nearly 80 percent and 62 percent, respectively, in a 20032004 survey. Overall, 18,600 children ages 2 to 19 and 27,652 adults 20 years old and older were surveyed over the total time period.
Drinking soda can be a detriment to human health. According to a study published in September 2019 in JAMA Internal Medicine, drinking soda is associated with a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, colorectal cancer, and all causes of death.
Its also linked to obesity, notes a review published in August 2017 in QJM, the journal of the Association of Physicians of Great Britain and Ireland. Findings from a review of three small studies and published in the journal Appetite suggested that drinking soda can trigger sweet cravings by dulling your sensitivity to sweet tastes, sparking a vicious cycle of eating foods and drinks with added sugar.
Soda has no nutrients of value, and therefore, there is no nutritional benefit to having it, says Kelly Kennedy, RD, staff nutritionist for Everyday Health. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture , one can of soda contains 36.8 grams of sugar. Thats about 1 ½ times more than the American Heart Association recommends a woman have in an entire day, Kennedy notes.
Soft Drink Sugar Amount
Depending on how often you consume sugar-sweetened beverages, you may not be aware of the soft drink sugar amount in some of the top drinks. In general, soft drinks contain sugar or artificial sweetener, carbonation, and natural or artificial flavoring. Some of the more common soft drinks include soda, sports drinks, energy drinks, sweetened teas, fruit punch and lemonade.
The concern over soda sugar content relates directly to the number of beverages people drink each day. For example, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that from 2011-2014, almost two-thirds or 62.9 percent of youth consumed at least one sugar-sweetened beverage on any given day.
To understand the amount of sugar that represents, it’s important to know some of the more common soda sugar content. According to the USDA, a 12-ounce cola soft drink has 156 calories and 37 grams of sugar.
If that seems high, then the Mountain Dew sugar content is really going to shock you. Pepsico, which makes Mountain Dew, reports that a 12-ounce can has 170 calories and 46 grams of sugar.
A 12-ounce can of root beer will net you approximately 152 calories and 39 grams of sugar, while a 12-ounce fruit drink will add 112 calories and 21.9 grams of sugar. And some energy drinks that are labeled as soft drinks can have as much as 38 grams of sugar, according to the USDA.

What Is The Healthiest Cocktail To Drink
Well, it depends on your definition of healthy. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, the overall effects of alcohol consumption are too complex to make blanket statements about whats healthy or not. But if youre aiming for low-cal, keep in mind that all alcohol has about 100 calories per serving, give or take, and its the other cocktail ingredients that add up. If low sugar is your goal, you can swap in diet sodas and sugar-free mixers like seltzer or sparkling water to bring down the carb count. But if were being honest, everything in moderation is probably the healthiest route.

A DELICIOUS LOW SUGAR COCA-COLA ALTERNATIVEKombucha has absolutely taken the market by storm and for good reason. Kombucha is a fermented tea that can be beneficial to the gut due to the richness of probiotics which provide healthy bacteria to your gut. These bacteria can help to improve overall health including digestive health, immune health, inflammation in the body and so much more. This Lo Bros Kombucha is one of my personal favourites. It is absolutely delicious and seriously tastes like Coca-Cola. I love incorporating kombucha into my day when I feel the sugar cravings hit or as a substitute for alcohol. Even though there is sugar in the ingredient list, the sugar feeds the yeast and bacteria, aiding in its growth. So most of the sugar added to the kombucha is consumed during the fermentation process making it a low sugar product.

How To Read The Ingredient List Of A Soft Drink:
Ingredients on an ingredient list appear in order from most to least so its always helpful to factor that in when assessing the ingredients list of a product. In the case of soft drinks, whether healthy or unhealthy options, water will always be the first ingredient. Other ingredients to look for include a natural sweetener instead of sugar and fruit juices or powders instead of artificial flavours.

Ingredients We Like To See In A Healthy Soft Drink:
Ideal ingredients of a healthy soft drink or soft drink alternative would be just water, some type of natural sweetener and a fruit juice or powder for flavour. We like to see natural sweeteners like stevia used in healthy soft drinks. This is because they have less of an impact on our blood sugar levels and wont lead to a spike that later results in a crash.
If it is a kombucha or kefir product, there will also be some live cultures. This is great because it means that the end result gives us the probiotic benefits. In the case of kombucha youll also see tea and sugar on the ingredients list, both of which are fermented by the SCOBY , so there are only trace amounts left.
Sugar In Soda And Other Drinks
The amount of added sugar you can safely consume varies based on your biological sex, age, and weight. Added sugar is often hiding in single servings of sodas and other sweetened drinks, meeting and sometimes exceeding the recommended daily intake for Americans.
Most of the calories in these beverages are “empty,” meaning they provide little to no nutritional value. Even the potential benefits of certain drinkssuch as the vitamins in fruit juice or the urinary tract health benefits of cranberry juiceare minimized by their excessively high sugar content.
The table below illustrates how much sugar is found in a 12-ounce serving of common beverages, which may be smaller than many people consume.

Alcohol And Blood Sugar When You Dont Have Diabetes
So, what should you know about how alcohol affects blood sugar if you dont have diabetes? Some of the ways alcohol affects blood sugar include:
- Alcohol is high in sugar and calories, which can raise the risk of type 2 diabetes. Drinking moderately isnt likely to lead to type 2 diabetes, but excessive drinking over time can be a trigger for its development.
- If you drink alcohol, its important to factor in those sugars and calories when youre looking at your overall diet.
- Even if you dont have diabetes and drink excessively, it can cause low blood sugar because drinking increases insulin secretion, although it is unlikely these levels will get dangerously low.

Does The Healthiest Soda Even Exist
What youve read so far clearly paints a very negative picture of soda. Considering all these problems with sweeteners, its not possible for a soda to be healthy. In that case, should you drink it at all?
Well, that really depends on your own health and on how much of it you drink. In the first place, you dont drink soda to stay healthy you do so to satisfy your thirst and because it tastes good. Thus, the question of what is the healthiest soda is not technically correct. The important part is to find out which soda is the least unhealthy.
Recommended Amount Of Sugar
There is no recommended daily allowance for sugar, which leaves consumers asking, “how much is too much?” That said, many health authorities have set upper limits or recommended daily amounts, including the American Heart Association .
For optimal health, the AHA recommends a maximum of 100 calories or 6 teaspoons of sugar per day for adult women. And men, because they are generally taller and weigh more, should not exceed 150 calories or 9 teaspoons per day.
Until recently, product nutrition labels did not have to show the percentage of calories from added sugars, according to the CDC. This left consumers guessing as to the actual percentage of calories from sugar in that particular product.
However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued new regulations requiring all packaged food and beverage containers produced by manufacturers to carry the new label, which shows the percentage from added sugars. The CDC points out that less than 10 percent of your daily calories should be from added sugars.
To give you a better idea of the added sugars you will find in soft drinks, check out this list from the CDC:
- High-fructose corn syrup

So How Can You Have Alcohol On Keto
Despite the warnings above, you can still enjoy alcohol on a low carb diet. As cliche as it sounds, the key is to do drink responsibly.
Here is how to drink alcohol on keto:
- Drink in moderation. Theres no reason to miss out on an occasional drink when you are out, but limit it to one or two. This will not only keep carbs and calories in check, it will also decrease the chance of stalling weight loss or a hangover the next day.
- Drink plenty of water. Aim for a glass of water for every drink you have, and an extra one before bed. This will reduce dehydration and youll be less likely to get a hangover.
- Choose low carb drink options. I covered low carb alcohol choices at a bar above, but if you miss classic sugar-laden mixed drinks, check out the list below for low carb drink recipes to make at home.

What Else Should You Consider When Choosing A Healthy Soft Drink
When choosing a healthy soft drink or alternative, its as simple as looking that its made up of real food ingredients. Like when choosing any healthy product, you should be able to understand all of the ingredients present on the list.
We should also be careful that healthy soft drinks arent loaded up with sugar. Its preferable if they use a natural sweetener like stevia, which are friendlier to our blood sugar levels.
Soda& Soft Drinks Calories
Soft drinks such as soda are primarily known for containing a sweetener like sugar along with other flavorings. They are non-alcoholic by themselves but can be used to make mixed drinks, such as rum and Coke. A lot of soft drinks are made from carbonated water, but others like fruit punch are not typically fizzy. Because the common ingredient in soda and soft drinks is often sugar, namely high fructose corn syrup, they are considered to be empty calories. This means that for the amounts of energy listed per serving in the calorie chart, there are very few of the nutrients that your body needs to run like a well-oiled machine. Check the nutrition facts of your favorite soft drink to see. Instead of a can of Fanta fruit-flavored soda, the same number of calories could be consumed as a piece of fruit like a banana, which offers potassium, or an orange, which has lots of vitamin C. Diet sodas will contain fewer calories, but they have a high amount of artificial sweeteners, flavorings, and colorings.

What Is The Recommended Sugar Intake For Adults And Children
WHO Guideline for sugar intake for adults and children recommended reducing the intake of free sugars to less than 10% of total energy intake throughout life. WHO also suggested a further reduction of the intake of free sugars to below 5% of total energy intake.
Dietary Guidelines for Americans also suggested reducing the sugar intake to less than 10% of our daily calory intake.
So, for a 2000Kcal standard diet, 200Kcal can be supplied through added sugars in a diet. Since, 1g of sugar supplies 4Kcal of energy, 50g of sugar provides 200Kcal. 100ml coke contains 11g of sugar, so a single coke can supplies 33g of sugar, corresponding to 132Kcal of energy. So, we must think twice or thrice before taking any type of soft drink.
