Which Wine Has More Sugar Red Or White

Generally speaking, red wine has the lowest sugar content, with an average of around 0.9g per serving. White wines will usually have around 1.4g of sugar per serving, although this varies by type. Given its sweet nature, it will come as no surprise to learn that a glass of rose could include a huge 21g to 72g of sugar.

Red Wine The Kind With The Least Sugar

This drink contains residual sugar , and it is only part of its composition, it does not necessarily mean that sugar was added to it in the creation process. The natural sugars in grapes are consumed by yeast and converted into ethanol , as a by-product during the fermentation process.

The one with the least amount of sugar is red wine, providing 0.9 grams per 175 ml glass. But this has nothing to do with rosé , despite its reddish color, since it contributes between 35 and 120 grams per glass.

One thing to keep in mind is that the drier a wine is, the less sugar it has . This is because the yeast has eaten up all the sugars in the grapes. Dry wines have lower residual levels, which are between 1 and 3 grams per liter of wine. It also helps to choose wines with a lower alcohol content. Since alcohol is made from sugar, the least sugary will be between 10-12% alcohol.

While dry red wines, such as Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sangiovese will be much lower in sugar than Merlot, for a very low-sugar wine, a dry white wine is best. Dry white wines are the ones that help the most to control sugar consumption. For comparison, a Moscato contains between 100 and 200 grams of sugar per liter, while a dry white wine like Brut has about 1-2 grams of sugar per liter.

A few weeks ago I wrote about whether it is a good idea to drink alcohol on a low carb diet. I mentioned various kinds of alcoholic drinks and their carb content for a typical serving. White wine is definitely not one of the worst offenders, but you can reduce the carb content further by mixing it with zero carb soda. It makes a longer drink, and for half the carbs of a regular glass of wine!

If you have fresh lime, you could squeeze some lime juice and add a twist of peel or a slice of lime to the drink. Or, if speed is of the essence, using bottled lime juice is just fine!

Dear Dr. Vinny,

I’m a diabetic, so I try to drink the driest wines I can find. Which wines have the least amount of sugar?

Jim, Milton, Pa.

Dear Jim,

First of all, please talk to your physician about including wine as part of a healthy lifestyle, especially when it comes to sugar. But I can tell you that during fermentation, the sugar in wine grapes is converted to alcohol, which means that wines made in a dry style dont have a lot of sugar in themmost are in the ballpark of less than 10 grams per liter of residual sugar.

As far as determining the actual amount of sugar in a bottle of wine, its not that easy. Sure, some styles are known for being drier and crisper and, others are richer and fuller-bodied. But there are many variableslike vintage variations, winemaker decisions and house stylesthat impact the actual sugar content of wine.

Does Sugar Content Differ From Red Wines To White Wines

You may be wondering, do red wines have less sugar than white wines? Not necessarily.

While red wines and white wines are made differently, theres no hard-and-fast rule for sugar content. Sugar content of a wine is determined by the fermentation process alone. If you notice a red wine is dryer than a white wine, that means the red wine was fermented longer. Rather than look at red or white, look at the label.

How Much Sugar Is In A Glass Of Wine

Because residual sugar varies wildly between different types and styles of wine, its hard to say how much sugar is in a glass of wine.

On average dry red wines or dry white wines have around 2 grams of sugar per standard glass. Off-dry wines have around 3-5 grams, and sweeter wines like Sauternes have 10 grams. Then, theres late harvest wines which can contain a whopping 20 grams of sugar per glass.

However, these are just averages and it can be hard to know what the best option is when sitting in front of an impatient sommelier. If youre trying to limit your sugar intake, follow these wine selection guidelines.

The sugar in wine is called Residual Sugar or RS.

That means the sugar in wine is what remains after grapes have gone through the winemaking process. Grapes contain fruit sugars and the residual sugar is whats left after yeast has chomped on those sugars.

Dry vs. Sweet WineDuring winemaking, yeast eats up sugar and makes ethanol as a by-product. When the yeast is able to eat up all the sugar the result is a dry wine higher in alcohol content and low in sugar. When the yeast is is stopped by a winemaker sugar remains and alcohol is lower.

This is why many sweet wines have less alcohol than dry wines! A great example of this is German Riesling, which has about 89% alcohol by volume if its sweet and 1011% ABV when its dry.

Why Is Sugar Added To Wine

Winemakers may add sugar to their wine to make them sweeter and easier for some people to enjoy. However, winemakers usually add more sugar to wine to produce higher alcoholic content.

It starts early in the fermentation state when cane or beet sugar is added to the grapes before fermenting. This process provides more sugar for the fermentation yeast to eat, producing more alcohol.

This process has become common mostly in cooler countries and cold-weather growing regions because it helps to increase alcohol levels and make their wine more enjoyable.

However, many countries have banned this practice. For example, Australia, Italy, Argentina, Spain, South Africa, Portugal, and Greece do not allow for chaptalization, while France and Germany do.

How To Pick Keto

If youre following the keto diet and sourcing only about five percent of your daily calories from carbs, even 5 grams per glass can add up quicklyso stick to low-sugar wines that are bone dry and come from a cooler region. A cooler-region wine minimizes the potential due to the lack of sugar evolved inside the grape, says Sweders. By fermenting it dry, you remove all residual sugar, cut total carbs and sugar.

Consuming alcohol is generally discouraged if youre on the keto diet because it slows fat burning and ketone production. However, there are ways to enjoy it very moderately , provided you eat a keto-friendly meal beforehand and choose the right type of alcohol.

When choosing to have wine, it is best to have some fat at that sitting so you dont get an isolated blood sugar spike or reactive hypoglycemia from the processing in your liver, says Ali Miller, R.D., L.D., C.D.E., a registered dietitian who runs a virtual ketosis program. Lucky for you, that means a charcuterie board is just the thing to nosh on while you sip some good low-carb wine.

With that in mind, heres a guide to five delicious, low-carb wines with the least amount of sugar that wont leave you feeling deprived.

Where Does Sugar In Wine Come From

Low Sugar Wine Options To Sip On

Unlike the fructose syrup and artificial sweeteners found in soda, wine has natural sugars. This naturally occurring sweetness is derived from grapes and is what makes our favorite Pinot Noirs or Chardonnays alcoholic.

This process of sugar becoming alcohol happens during fermentation. To trigger this chemical reaction, yeast is sometimes added into the tanks with the grapes. As the wine ferments, the yeast converts the sugars from the grapes into carbon dioxide and ethanol, which in turn produces alcohol.

As you may have guessed, certain wines have more sugar than others. This is achieved in several different ways. Most commonly, winemakers simply stop the fermentation process before the yeast has converted all of the sugars into alcohol, resulting in a wine that is higher in residual sugar.

Winemakers also create high-sugar wines by leaving the grapes on the vine for longer before picking them. These are called late harvest wines and they can be very sweet, due to the grapes being extra ripe and extra sweet when picked. Fortified wines such as Port get their iconic sweetness from adding brandy just before the fermentation process.

During fermentation, many mass wine producers will mix in other additives, such as artificial colors, sweeteners, and preservatives like sulphur. Winemakers are usually legally permitted to add whatever natural ingredients they like.

What If I Cant Find A Tech Sheet

If you cant find or if the residual sugar is not listed, here are a few tips:

  • Cheap wine usually has residual sugar. Its safe to assume that most affordable wines from the US contain some residual sugar, perhaps anywhere from 215 g/L. There are, of course, excellent exceptions to this rule so look for more information first.
  • Drink slightly better wine. If you spend a little more on a bottle of wine, say around $1525, producers tend to feature less residual sugar . Grapes are higher quality so the wines dont need sweetness to taste fruity.
  • Drink slightly less. Even at 15 g/L RS, a wine will only add about 7.5 sugar calories which isnt much! Like with all things, moderation is key!

How Much Sugar In White Wine

    The Secret

White wine can have as little as 1.5 grams of sugar, again dependent on the brand and amount you’re drinking. White wine is the lighter, crisper, sweeter wine. You likely began your journey as a wine drinker with a glass of white wine. It is the most accessible wine, and thanks to its sweeter flavor profile, more sugary. This isn’t a negative thing in itself, but white wine also lacks some other benefits of red wine. Why? Fermentation.

White wine is made from white grapes. How surprising! Unlike red wine, these grapes are peeled prior to the fermentation process. This means that the antioxidant and other benefits associated with grape skins are less pronounced. Don’t confuse antioxidants with oxidation, though. Oxidized wine still has the same properties as normal wine. Removing the skin also means that white wine is lower in calories and alcohol content.

It’s a mixed bag in regard to benefits, but what about the sugar in wine?
