Does Apple Cider Vinegar Help With diabetes?

ACV is made from fermented apples. It has a pungent, sour taste almost reminiscent of the fruit from whence it came, a strong vinegar smell, and a slightly sparkling feel on the tongue. If you are just looking for a little help controlling your blood sugar, you may be able to use the pasteurized ACV found in the baking aisle of most grocery stores. However, ACV also has other portended benefits, such as:

  • Weight Loss
  • Lowering Cholesterol
  • Fighting Cancer

All of which are usually attributed to the mother or bacteria that helps create the ACV during the fermentation process. For this good stuff, youll want to get unfiltered, unpasteurized ACV.

How To Make Apple Cider Vinegar At Home

Apple cider vinegar must be made only with apples and a little water so that it’s as natural as possible.

It is recommended that you use two big apples, which you should wash, peel, and remove the core and pips from, in order to cut into small chunks. Then follow these steps:

  • Place the apple chunks in a blender and add some water. The amount of water depends on the quantity of apple you use, but it is normally recommended that you add water until at least half of the apple chunks are covered
  • Blend until the apples are completely blended
  • Pour this mixture into a glass bottle, put a lid on and store it away from sunlight, at room temperature for 4 to 6 weeks. It’s important to fill the bottle only until halfway for the fermentation to happen properly
  • After this time, place the mixture in a large recipient like a glass dish without a lid, cover with a clean cloth and leave in the sun for about three days.
  • After being in the sun for three days, the apple cider vinegar must be filtered and then placed in a dark bottle, before it can be used.

Potential Benefits Of Apple Cider Vinegar For Diabetes

What is it about this vinegar that may be providing these benefits? Apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid, which my slow down the conversion of complex carbs into the bloodstream. In theory, this process would prevent unwanted blood glucose spikes, Weiner says.

Although there isnt a clear consensus in the scientific community about what may make acetic acid beneficial, theories include that the component may affect the way carbs are digested, promote muscles uptake of glucose, and potentially ramp up B cell insulin secretion, according to a study published in October 2013 in the Journal of Functional Foods.

Nonetheless, those who take drugs that increase the risk of hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, should carefully monitor glucose levels when consuming vinegar. Its prudent to check blood sugar levels frequently, especially if you take a medicine like insulin or sulfonlyureas that has hypoglycemia as a side effect, says Jill Weisenberger, RDN, CDE, author of Diabetes Weight Loss Week by Week, who is based in Newport News, Virginia.

Lots Of Brands How To Choose The Right Acv

ACV is available in lots of brands with attractive packages. Of course, all of them are prepared in factories with certain processes. How to choose the right one with maximum health benefits?

    • The ACV should be made of raw apples, and it should be mentioned in the pack itself.
    • It should be unprocessed and unfiltered so that all the nutrients are retained in natural form.
    • Just shake the ACV bottle, and let it sit for a few minutes. If you notice some sediments then you can assure its good and wholly natural.

Is Apple Cider Vinegar Safe For Everyone

    Vinegar Lower Blood Sugar

It is important to note that as ACV is a traditional remedy and not a medicine, there are no official guidelines for how to take it. There is also limited data available for the effects of long-term use or consumption of large quantities of ACV.

The potential lowering of blood sugars could be problematic for diabetics, including those who use insulin, and it may reduce potassium levels in the body. For the same reason, ACV is best avoided if you are taking any diuretic medication, also known as water pills.

For those suffering with gastroparesis or delayed gastric emptying, where the movement of food between the stomach and small intestine is slowed, ACV may make the symptoms worse and should be avoided.

There is also a concern that acidic drinks, such as ACV, may cause damage to tooth enamel. As a precaution, it is a good idea to dilute the vinegar appropriately, never consume it neat, and dont sip throughout the day. It may also help to rinse the mouth with fresh water after consuming ACV. Check with your dentist if you are concerned.

If youre on prescription medication, have a relevant medical condition or have concerns speak to your GP for guidance.

High In Acetic Acid Which Has Potent Biological Effects

Vinegar is made in a two-step process, related to how alcohol is made.

The first step exposes crushed apples to yeast, which ferment the sugars and turn them into alcohol.

In the second step, bacteria are added to the alcohol solution, which further ferment the alcohol and turn it into acetic acid… the main active compound in vinegar.

In French, the word “vinegar” actually means “sour wine.”

Organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar also contains “mother,” strands of proteins, enzymes and friendly bacteria that give the product a murky, cobweb-like appearance.

Some people believe that the “mother” is responsible for most of the health benefits, although there are currently no studies to support this.

Apple cider vinegar only contains about 3 calories per tablespoon, which is very low.

There are not many vitamins or minerals in it, but it does contain a tiny amount of potassium. Quality apple cider vinegar also contains some amino acids and antioxidants.

Who Should Avoid Using Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar must not be consumed by those who have apple cider vinegar allergies or people who are taking medication like Digoxin, or diuretics such as Furosemide or Hydrochlorothiazide, as they can reduce potassium levels in the blood and cause muscle weakness, cramps, paralysis, or heart arrhythmia.

  • Add more good fats to your diet. Good fats are also called unsaturated fats.
  • Cut sources of saturated fat, such as fatty meat and dairy. Choose lean cuts of meat, and try eating more plant-based meals.
  • Eliminate artificial sources of trans fats.
  • Increase your fiber intake.
  • Cut back on sugar.
  • First Make Sure You Buy The Right Apple Cider Vinegar

Made by crushing, distilling, and fermenting apples, apple cider vinegar does offer a few generally accepted health benefits.

Those benefits come mostly from the mother which is the beneficial bacteria that cause the fermentation process.

First, yeast is added to apple juice to break down the sugars and turn them into alcohol, explains Enzymedica. Then, bacteria is added, which converts the alcohol into acetic acid. This bacteria is what is known as the mother because it is the catalyst that gives rise to the vinegar. Many store-bought apple cider vinegars have the mother removed because it gives the vinegar a cloudy appearance, which can lead some customers to believe that the product has gone bad. But this is not the case. In fact, the mother is the healthiest part.

When purchasing ACV, you should be looking for a product thats raw, unfiltered, and comes from the mother. All three of these details should be clearly printed on the packaging of your ACV contained in a glass container versus a plastic container.

You can find high-quality ACV in most grocery stores in the baking aisle or online at Trader Joes and on.

*Please note: You should not drink ACV without diluting it in water or another beverage. The high acidity content can damage your teeth, mouth, and throat if consumed regularly without diluting.

Five Ways To Incorporate Vinegar Into Your Meals

Have a vinegar-based salad dressing before you eat. This may be especially helpful if youre planning on having a carbohydrate-rich meal. One study showed that when people consumed 1 ounce of white vinegar with a meal of bread containing 50 grams of carbohydrates, it lowered post-meal glucose spikes and insulin levels.

Another study of healthy people found that eating 100 grams of sliced lettuce dressed with olive oil and vinegar before consuming 50g of white bread carbs experienced significantly lower blood sugar compared to those who ate the same amount of salad dressed with olive oil but no vinegar.

Interestingly, the study authors also compared the vinegar group to a second vinegar group in which they added sodium bicarbonate to the vinegar to neutralize its pH. The scientists found that the neutralized vinegar did not affect blood sugar, suggesting that vinegars acidic nature plays a crucial role in its ability to modulate blood sugar.

Drizzle vinegar over steamed or roasted veggies. It turns out even a small amount of vinegar consumed with meals can help control blood sugar, too. One study found consuming two teaspoons of vinegar with carbs may reduce post-meal blood glucose levels as much as 20 percent. Bonus: the study also found that consuming vinegar with a high-carb meal also increases satiety.

Still, if youre on team ACV and want to try it, there are some side effects that you may want to consider

ACV can weaken tooth enamel. The acid in vinegar can erode tooth enamel. Weaker teeth can lead to dental problems down the line, including tooth decay. If you are going to have apple cider vinegar as the main ingredient and not, say, in a salad dressing, its best to dilute it with some water.

ACV can mess with potassium levels. In some people, regular consumption of ACV has lowered potassium levels. If youre already on a medication that can lower potassium, like some blood pressure medications, youll want to be cautious.

ACV can alter insulin levels. While ACV may be beneficial to diabetics, it may also alter insulin levels. You should be particularly careful with vinegars and speak to your healthcare provider before increasing your apple cider vinegar intake.

What Does Apple Cider Vinegar Do To Your Body

Apple cider vinegar, and its active ingredientacetic acid, may have beneficial effects on your body, including killing bacteria, stabilizing blood sugar, and promoting weight loss. Acetic acid has historically been used as a disinfectant. It can kill bacteria that lead to acne or infection. It works to improve insulin sensitivity, which can prevent blood sugar spikes after eating. Studies on humans have shown that ACV delays gastric emptying, also preventing blood sugar spikes, when given with a starchy meal. It has also been studied in rats, with results showing improvement in pancreatic beta-cell function . Either way, the effect is especially beneficial for people with diabetes. It can increase feelings of fullness, which can mean you eat less and lose weight. Some animal studies show that vinegar can reduce blood pressure, but there isnt enough research to demonstrate a beneficial effect in humans. And while its a common myth that apple cider vinegar can slow the growth of cancer, theres not enough evidence to use it as a treatment yet.

Taking Apple Cider Vinegar To Control Blood Sugar

Research indicates that one of the ways that apple cider vinegar can help to reduce blood sugar is by slowing the emptying of the stomach during and after eating. Because the body is absorbing fewer calories at a time, it lowers the risk of large spikes in blood sugar. Its best to maintain a steady blood sugar level throughout the day to avoid blood sugar highs and crashes that can have negative effects, both physically and mentally.

If youre on a diabetes-specific diet, you already know that snacks that are high in carbohydrates should generally be avoided, especially snacks with little to no nutrition like potato chips, ice cream, or cookies the easy-to-grab choices that people often make when they have eaten and just want to grab a quick snack. Because apple cider vinegar can reduce the speed at which food is digested, it may help you feel fuller for a longer time. This can help to curb cravings for snacks that are high in carbohydrates, which turn into glucose during the digestion process.
