From our experience, the main reason people are unable to get rid of ghost ants is that they are spraying over-the-counter products from big box stores. These products are great at killing the ghost ants and other small ants instantly, so it seems like its working.
The problem is that the active ingredient in these products usually interferes with the pheromone trails these ants follow, causing them to split trails into different rooms, creating new queens and new colonies in a process called budding.
These over-the-counter contact kill ant sprays also have no residual, so they won’t have any effect on ants that aren’t directly hit by your spray.
To successfully get rid of these ants, we rely on non-repellent treatment methods so that the ants may survive for a few days, long enough to carry the products we apply back to their queens to eliminate all of the colonies in and around your home.
Sprays that are considered non-repellent, including Termidor, Phantom, Taurus, Temprid, and Alpine WSG, will not kill ants on contact if they are applied following product label instructions. This is important because it will allow the ants to survive long enough to share the active ingredient with other ants, eventually leading to colony collapse.
When used in conjunction with a variety of granular baits and gel baits, insect monitors, and dusts like Boric Acid, ant control and prevention can be very effective at getting rid of ants for good.

Coffee Grounds As A Repellent
Rather than throw out used coffee grounds, you can use them as a natural ant repellent. Some say that the strong smell of coffee repels sugar ants, others say that the nitrogen in coffee grounds burns the ants legs. Whatever the case, coffee is an excellent way to control ants naturally in your home and or outside without toxic chemicals.
Spread the used coffee grounds in areas where you have noticed ant trails in your home or where you think they come into your property.
Put Out Natural Ant Bait Or Traps
Here are my preferred approaches:
Option 1. Borax and Sugar Bait
Mix .5 cups of sugar with 1.5 tablespoons of borax and 1.5 cups of warm water to make ant bait .
Dip a few cotton balls into the mixture and place them on top of areas where you see a concentration of ants. This is an effective way to kill an entire ant colony.
Since borax can be harmful to humans if ingested and an eye irritant if particles waft upward, wear gloves and protective goggles. Immediately wash your gloves and hands afterward.
Option 2. Borax and Sugar Trap
Using the above recipe, combine the borax, sugar, and warm water in a plastic bottle. Poke holes in the bottle and lay the borax traps in your garden. Very soon, the bottle will fill up with dead ants.
Option 3. Cornmeal and Boric Acid Trap
Mix one part of cornmeal with nine parts of boric acid. Add enough vegetable oil to make a smooth paste. Put the mixture into a plastic bottle, punch holes, and place it wherever you see ant activity.
While cornmeal wont kill the ants, it will attract them to the bottle, and the boric acid will kill them when they take the cornmeal back to their nests.
Option 4. Borax and Peanut Butter Bait
For more extreme infestations, use the above borax and sugar trap recipe but substitute the sugar with smooth peanut butter.
