Liquor & Mixed Drinks : About Southern Comfort

This week the state run liquor stores in Finland pulled Fireball Cinnamon Whisky because it contains levels of propylene glycol that are out of compliance with European regulations. Both Sweden and Norway followed suit asking for the batches of of Fireball with propylene glycol to be recalled.

Since Fireball is such a hot product, there was an immediate firestorm on the Internet, enough to cause Sazerac president Mark Brown to issue a statement about the recall. Truth be told, the EU has much stricter regulations on food and beverage than the US . The US Food and Drug Administration considers propylene glycol safe up to 50 grams per KG and its a common additive thats found in thousands of products in the US.

Its not uncommon for alcohol companies to make different versions of their products for different regions because of varying food laws and requirements. makes a special version of their vermouth in the United States that doesnt contain any calamus, a botanical thats banned by the FDA but considered safe in the EU. .

The big issue that this Scandinavian recall raises is that, whether or not its considered safe, consumers should have the information on what theyre consuming so they can make their own decisions. Go to any grocery store and almost every packaged product lists its ingredients as well as calories, sugar, and a host of other important details. Why is hard alcohol exempt from this?

How Does Alcohol Affect Your Keto Diet

When you drink, around 20% of the alcohol enters your bloodstream, where it goes on to affect the brain and other parts of the body. The remaining 80% goes to your small intestine and then to your liver. Once in the liver, the process of metabolizing alcohol into energy begins via an enzyme called nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide . As NAD is also responsible for turning glucose into fuel, the liver temporarily stops glucose metabolism to deal with the alcohol.

The liver is always going to prioritize metabolizing ethanol, says Ben Greenfield, author of Beyond Training and host of the Ben Greenfield Fitnesspodcast. That will occur over and above gluconeogenesis and utilizing glucose in the bloodstream. At the same time, as mentioned earlier, fatty acids will stop being converted into ketones. These systems wont get back on track until the alcohol is burned for fuel.

To add further complications, your body must deal with the waste products that drinking alcohol produces. When your liver breaks down ethanol, it results in acetaldehyde. The body sees this as a toxic threat and slows down fat metabolism further so that it can deal with the load, which it converts to acetyl CoA. At the same time, a buildup of acetaldehyde levels along with the release of NAD prompts the liver to produce new fatty acids. In other words, not only does drinking hurt your ability to burn fat, it encourages you to store more of ita double whammy.

Alcoholic Drinks & Beverages Calories

The calories in alcohol, including beer and wine, are called empty calories because they do not contain a significant amount of the three macronutrients: protein, fat, and carbohydrates. Alcoholic mixed drinks often have added elements like cola, tonic water, or milk, which can contain macronutrients as well as nutritional value from vitamins and minerals, particularly in the case of juice. However, most cocktails are made using mixers that are high in sugar, which is reflected in the calorie chart as a greater amount of total calories per serving. Nutrition labels reveal that many mixed drinks are also loaded with sugar from syrups. To keep a drink lower in calories, stick to liquor, also called spirits, which are almost pure alcohol due to the distilling process. Alcoholic drinks with a lower percentage of alcohol per volume, such as beer and wine, also have calories from carbohydrates like the wheat in beer and the natural sugar from grapes used to make wine. In general, it is best to avoid all alcoholic beverages on a weight-loss diet and ensure calories come from whole food sources with quality nutrition facts.

Alcohol And Workout Performance And Recovery

Southern Comfort 100

If you follow some form of a keto diet and you work out, youve got even more reason to cut back on booze. New Zealands Massey University has done numerous studies on how alcohol affects performance and recovery. It found that drinking can inhibit the protein synthesis necessary for muscle repair and growth, as well as delay injury healing. In an article on the schools website, study author Matthew Barnes concluded, If youre to perform, you shouldnt be drinking alcohol.

Theres also evidence to suggest that alcohol can diminish muscle-building pathways triggered by strength training. A study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research concluded that, Alcohol should not be ingested after RE as this ingestion could potentially hamper the desired muscular adaptations to RE by reducing anabolic signaling, at least in men.

Is Southern Comfort A Whiskey

Though it invariably appears on liquor store shelves next to Jim Beam and Jack Daniels, Southern Comfort isnt actually a whiskey. Invented in 1874 by New Orleans bartender Martin Wilkes Heron, the original spirit blended fruits and spices with low-quality whiskey to add sweetness and smoothness. Today, as a result of these infusions, Southern Comfort is technically classed as a liqueur.

How Much Can I Drink On A Keto Diet

Its impossible to give a one-size-fits-all answer for how much booze you can drink while still staying keto. Were all different, and, just as with other kinds of food and drink, alcohol rarely affects two people in exactly the same way. According to DAgostino, your metabolic state before you start drinkingwhether youre fed, fasted, or semi-fastedcan also affect the degree to which ethanol impacts you.

To be on the safe side, it seems best to limit yourself to two drinks per night at the most. This allowance assumes youre choosing from the What Alcohol Can I Drink on a Ketogenic Diet list, as these options will make it easier to stay in ketosis, or at least low-carb enough that youll avoid disrupting your hormone balance while also gaining the health benefits that alcoholic beverages can provide in moderation.

If you want to get really scientific about your boozing, DAgostino suggests buying an Abbot Precision Xtra monitor on Amazon.com or at a drugstore to measure your ketone and glucose levels before you start drinking and 30 minutes after you stop. Then see how different kinds of alcohol and quantities affect you, he says. I found that 12 ounces of dry wine is the most I should have, and I often only have six ounces.

Are There Any Tricks That Would Allow Me To Drink More

As alcohol is a diuretic, youve probably heard the recommendation to pound water before, during, and after drinking to offset the potential dehydration. Like alcohol consumption itself, drinking water is fine if done in moderation. Drinking too much fluid, however, will start flushing electrolytes out of your system, and that can make a hangover even worse. Stick to an eight to 12-ounce glass of water per serving of alcohol and include a pinch of sea salt. The salt contains trace minerals that aid in fluid retention.

Eating food will slow down the absorption of the alcohol, so try to combine your drinking with a main meal. Blood alcohol content can rocket up to three times higher if you dont have any food in your system. Whereas if you eat just before or while drinking, peak alcohol concentration can be reduced by between 9 and 23%. Be sure youre eating the right foods too. While a night of drinking can be part of a cheat meal that finds you eating carb foods as well, its smarter to stick to keto-friendly fare like meat and vegetables. DAgostino says fat, protein, and fiber slow the absorption of alcohol and reduce the load it puts on your digestive system. A big meal may also help you feel more satiated, causing you to drink less.

So What Exactly Is In Southern Comfort Anyway

Southern Comfort, SoCo, Cuffs & Button — whatever you want to call it — is a drink with more mystery than you know. You’ve probably encountered this spirit at some point in your life — or at the very least have seen clutching a bottle in her hand — but, have you ever stopped to think about what it is, exactly?

Most people think of Southern Comfort as a whiskey. A look at ‘s search trends shows “Southern Comfort Whiskey” as one of the more popular search terms. And the bottle of brown liquid often sits next to the whiskey at your local liquor store, but it is not in fact a whiskey. Or a bourbon. Or a Scotch. Don’t let its golden color make a fool of you.

Southern Comfort, which was first named Cuffs & Buttons, is in fact a liqueur — a whiskey-flavored one. The original recipe was created by Martin Wilkes Heron in New Orleans. Heron was a barkeep looking for a solution to make unrefined whiskey more palatable. He came up with a recipe that added fruits and spices to the harsh liquor, and his customers loved it. With their thirst as his inspiration, he began marketing his recipe, which he later renamed Southern Comfort.

It’s sweet, fruity and strong. And that’s why it makes for such a great cocktail — and an easier to drink whiskey-type drink.

    Can Whiskey Cause Weight Gain

    Southern Comfort 80 Proof

As a stand-alone drink on the rocks, the sugar content of whiskey is nothing to worry about.

However, it is an extremely calorific spirit.

Whiskey contains approximately 250 calories per 100ml, which means a double whiskey on the rocks has 220 calories.

With the average recommended daily calorie intake for men currently sitting at 2,500 calories, its easy to see how just a few drinks can quickly add up to a large chunk of your daily calorie intake.

And if you regularly exceed your daily intake and are not active, which means pursuing at least two hours of exercise three times a week, you will be a risk from significant weight gain, caused by whiskey.

If youre drinking one or two drinks a week and that drink is whiskey on the rocks, you shouldnt be too concerned.

When drinking whiskey and other spirits, keep your sugar intake to a minimum by avoiding common high-sugar mixers such as:

    • Coca-Cola
    • Schweppes Lemonade
    • Orange Juice

Similarly, many cocktails are extremely high in sugar and should be avoided if youre watching your sugar intake or your weight.

For example, a Whiskey Sour has approximately 16g of sugar and 163 calories. A Manhattan is significantly better, with just 3g of sugar.

However, popular aperitifs are also a concern. For instance, a standard Irish Coffee has approximately 8g of sugar and 210 calories.

Once again, to ensure your alcohol intake doesnt reflect on your waistband, choose whiskey on the rocks and moderate your consumption.

Seven Things You Should Know About Southern Comfort

Born in the Big Easy, and a favorite of rock royalty like Janis Joplin, Southern Comfort is a spirit that wears many hats .

If your only exposure to SoCo is an ill-conceived shot you sort of remember taking one time, its time to give the spirit a closer look. From humble beginnings to WWII-era patriotism, Southern Comfort has a storied history. Here are seven things you should know about the famous southern liqueur.

Southern Comfort Arrived In Europe Aboard Us Bombers

Homesick World War II pilot Colonel Thomas J. Barr named his B-17G bomber Southern Comfort in honor of his favorite liqueur. Barr and his crew even painted the name on their plane, hoping the company might send them a few free bottles. He had to wait more than 60 years. In 2015, the brand finally presented Barr with a case of special-label Southern Comfort during a ceremony recognizing his war efforts.

With dwindling popularity, in 2011, Southern Comfort turned to flavored releases. From fruity infusions like Cherry and Lime, to dessert mixes like Caramel and Gingerbread spice, there were numerous infusions over a five-year period. None of them, however, were more ill-conceived than Fiery Pepper, a blend of the sweet liqueur and Tabasco. Thankfully, Sazerac dropped the flavored releases when it purchased the brand in 2016.

How Much Sugar Is There In Whiskey

    Georgia Peach

86-proof whiskey has 0.1 gram of sugar per 100 millilitres .

And a standard shot of alcohol measures 44ml, which means, if youre drinking a double whiskey on the rocks only with ice cubes your drink will contain 88ml of alcohol, which equals 0.088g of sugar.

    What do these numbers mean?

Upon review, whiskey does not have much sugar at all if consumed with ice only, that is.

However, if youre drinking multiple drinks over the course of an evening or mixing your whiskey with a soft drink like Coca-Cola a mixture frowned upon by whiskey aficionados around the world the sugar content will rapidly increase.

For example, 250ml of full-fat Coca-Cola, the standard serving if youre ordering a double whiskey and Coke, has 23.7g of sugar, bringing the sugar content of your drink to 23.8g thats almost six teaspoons, or two tablespoons, of sugar.

When youre drinking whiskey, to keep sugar to a minimum, have it on the rocks or with water, and always moderate your intake.

If you drink whiskey every night, it will show.

What Is An Old Fashioned Cocktail

One of the simplest mixed drinks, the old fashioned cocktail consists of your choice of whiskey, I prefer bourbon or Southern Comfort, a bit of sugar, and Angostura bitters. Some might add a splash of water, something I do to help dissolve the sugar, and others would top it off with a fizzy water such as club soda.

Cajun Rice And Shrimp In Cornbread Bowls

I mentioned a couple months back that through the month of June Id be working with Southern Comfort on a series of food and drink recipes. Thus far its only been drinks, and although those have all been amazing, Im especially excited to share this first food recipe.

With Southern Comfort originating in New Orleans I wanted to make a New Orleans-themed dish and there isnt too much that screams New Orleans more than cajun shrimp and rice.

Shrimp and rice has been done a million times already though, so to make it a little more unique I decided to bake some cornbread bowls to eat it out of. Oh, and then I whipped up a Southern Comfort whiskey sauce to drizzle over them.

For the whiskey sauce I originally planned on going with more of a savory sauce the type that would pair well with a steak but opted for a sweeter sauce instead, similar to something youd usually find served with bread pudding.

These are perfect as an appetizer or even as a meal if you just want to be able to get the perfect amount of cornbread, rice and shrimp in every single bite. I made twelve of them and within an hour I only had four left. Theyre that good.

    • 1 red bell pepper, deseeded and diced
    • 1 green bell pepper, deseeded and diced
    • ½ yellow onion, diced
    • ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
    • 1 cup uncooked white rice
    • 1 cup vegetable broth
    • ½ cup plus 2 tablespoons Southern Comfort
    • ½ pound shrimp
    • Youll also need this Bake-a-Bowl Pan
  • Pour batter into the Bake-a-Bowl Pan.
