Who Gets The Most Benefit From Ultrafiltered Milk
In terms of the nutrition perks, youll have to decide if theyre worth the extra cost of this milk the price of which can be twice as much as regular milk.
Maybe youre among the large number of Americans who have trouble getting in the recommended three servings of dairy every day? The Economic Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported that the percentage of adults and adolescents who did not drink fluid milk every day between the years of 1977-78 and 2007-08 went from 41% to 54%.
Of the Americans that did continue the daily milk habit, the number of that enjoyed milk three times a day decreased from 13% to 4%.
Although it wont replace all the nutrients found in regular milk, ultrafiltered milk can help with the calcium shortfall. This can be particularly useful on both ends of the age spectrum.

Fairlife Vs Other Brands
This cold start yogurt recipe requires ultra pasteurized milk. Although not essential, if the milk is also ultra filtered, youll get thicker yogurt. Fairlife milk is the brand that I use because its ultra pasteurized AND ultra filtered, which gives it a high protein content. The higher protein makes the Fairlife yogurt thicker and creamier.
There are three kinds of Fairlife milk: the red bottle is whole milk, the blue bottle is 2% milk and the light blue bottle is 1% milk. All three have high protein levels but due to the fat content, whole milk will give you the thickest yogurt, and 1% milk will be slightly thinner.
You can use other brands of ultra pasteurized ultra filtered milk. Try and find one with a protein content like Fairlife .
If the brand youre using has a lower protein content, there are a few things you can do to ensure success:

Googling it has only lead to biased reviews that demonize it. I LOVE the chocolate milk myself. The regular milk smell kind of funky but I prefer the taste of protein in it over regular. I am really hoping someone can step in and explain exactly why theres no good literature on it .

Fairlifes isnt expensive anymore since Coca Cola ships it. Its only $2.99 at Walmart and Food Lion, even the DHA version. Common to see it on sale at many places like Target, HT etc. They add the lactase enzyme and the ultra filtration adds 50% more protein and cuts the sugar in half. A standard half gal is 189ml, fairlife is less at 154 which to me is the only gripe but easily worth it.
What Are Protein Shakes
Protein shakes are drinks produced by combining protein powder with water or another liquid with other ingredients. They can be a valuable supplement to your diet, especially if you have limited access to high-quality protein meals. Although most people do not require protein shakes to achieve their daily protein needs, they might be beneficial if you need to increase your intake or are having difficulty achieving your needs through food alone. You can buy protein powder and mix it yourself, or you can buy readymade liquid shakes from a variety of manufacturers.
The following are some of the most popular protein powders on the market:
- Whey protein:dairy-based, easily absorbed, and includes all necessary amino acids
- Casein protein: Contains all essential amino acids, is slowly digested and is dairy-based.
- Soy protein: plant-based, contains all essential amino acids and soy isoflavones, which may have health advantages.
- Hemp protein: plant-based, includes all essential amino acids, is abundant in omega-3 and omega-6 fats, and contains a large amount of arginine.
- Rice protein: plant-based, with less lysine, an essential amino acid
- Pea protein: Plant-based, includes all required amino acids and maybe a less allergic alternative to soy or wheat protein.

What Is Fairlife Milk
fairlife milk is milk. Thats the simple answer. To answer more in depth, fairlife is a milk that has been filtered in a way that allows the components of milk fat, protein, minerals, water and lactose to be divided into its most basic parts. Once the milk is divided into its most basic parts, fairlife recombines the parts, leaving out the lactose, some of the fat and increasing the protein and nutrients.
The filtration process is not some sort of chemical process, nothing is added to the milk for it to be filtered. Filtered means just that, the milk is sent through filters to strain the different parts out. You can read more about the filtration process on the fairlife website.

How Does Your Milk Fair
Perhaps as a result of the fat-free craze of the 90s, the term skim is still associated with being lighter, good-for-your-waistlinethink of all of the people who order Skinny Vanilla Lattes at Starbucks, which are 120 calories a pop. While skim milk is certainly a healthier option than whole milk because the fat has been, well, skimmed out, this doesnt mean, by any stretch of the imagination, that its a free food.
Milk, whether its 1%, 2% skim or whole, contains carbohydratesand as any F-Factor devotee knows, when carbohydrates are consumed in excess of what the body can store for energy, they lead to weight gain. Translation: skim will not always help you to stay so trim! In fact, 1 cup of Organic Valley Skim Milk contains 12g of carbohydratesall of which are sugar. Thats more sugar than an entire Krispy Kreme donut in just one measly cup. Forget skim, thats GRIM!
If you happen to be a Skinny Latte-lover, theres no need to moo-urne this vice. Recent innovations in the milk market have really shaken things up, and today were here to introduce you to one that, when it comes to your diet, is much more fair. MOOOve on over, Organic Valley! F-Factor Fans, its time that you meet Fairlife.

Is Filtered Milk Better For You
Youve probably heard of ultra-filtered milk by now. It sounds bogusuntil you hear that it has more protein and less sugar than regular milk. So should you switch over? Thats what Mens Health nutrition advisor Mike Roussell, Ph.D., is advising his clients to do. Heres the background: Ultra-filtered milk has become more widely available this year with the release of a new brand, fairlife, which is under the Coca-Cola umbrella and uses a grammatically-frustrating all lower-caps brand name. There are also other brands available, like Hood Simply Smart. Fairlife says they make the supermilk by running regular milk through a series of filters. The molecules of water, protein, fat, minerals, and lactose that make up milk are each a different size, so each filter removes one of those components until they are all separated. Then the company recombines the individual nutrients in a new ratio, resulting in a milk with more protein and calcium, less sugar, and no lactose. It takes milk and makes it better, says Roussell, who has no affiliation with any filtered milk companies. The nutritional breakdown for one cup of fairlifes 2% ultra-filtered milk: 13 grams of protein , 6 grams of sugar , and 370 milligrams of calcium . The company also makes skim, whole, and chocolate versions of the re-engineered dairy. It may seem like a small differenceyoure getting 5 more grams of protein and 6 fewer grams of sugarbut its a step in the right directiContinue reading > >

Q: Are Protein Shakes Harmful For Your Kidneys
They can be. Its extremely important to consult a medical professional if youre consuming multiple protein shakes per day. Since your kidneys help your body to remove waste, overwhelming them with protein can actually have negative consequences. Generally, following the nutritional guidelines on your protein shake offers a good rule of thumb and guidance for protein shake consumers. And try to limit your protein shake intake to one shake per day. Signs of too much protein consumption may include indigestion, diarrhea, nausea, irritability, and more. However, if you have pre-existing health conditions, its possible that excessive protein may cause irritation or additional harm to the kidneys.

Fairlife Milk Offers Athletes Extra Protein
So, what’s not to love about this premium milk? Well, the price, for one. Fairlife milk is about double the cost of its conventional counterpart, which is a drawback especially for families that consume large amounts of milk each week . Also, some nutritionists question whether the extra nutrition that the milk is hyped as offering is really necessary for most people. Registered dietitian Keri Gans says, “Milk is already a great package of nutrients I’m not quite sure why it needs to be changed,” and nutritionist Alissa Rumsey adds, “When you really look at the numbers, it can sound appealing, but in general most Americans are already getting enough protein” . So, why fix something that’s not broken?
While families in general may not want to pay the extra price for ultra-filtered milk, there are some that could really benefit from Fairlife’s unique nutritional profile. Athletes recovering from intense workouts, those looking to up their calcium intake , and, of course, the lactose-intolerant, are likely to find Fairlife milk an excellent addition to their diets.

Ultrafiltered Milk Is Highly Processed But So Is Regular Milk
The additional processing steps have caused some people to call it frankenmilk. They may not have been thinking about the fact that the regular milk that reaches our table is already a processed product.
It must be processed to make it safe and delicious.
Regular milk goes through four steps before it is ready to hit the grocery shelves. The steps are:
- Standardization: Separation of cream
- Pasteurization: High heat treatment to kill microbes
- Homogenization: Blending of the milk to ensure that the fat globules dont separate
- Fortification: Addition of vitamins A and D
Does concentrating/filtering the milk make it a super milk and a better, healthier choice than regular dairy milk?
The answer to that question depends on your tastebuds and nutritional concerns. In terms of flavor, I find that ultrafiltered milk has a creamier taste than regular milk and enjoy using it to lighten coffee or black tea, but others detect the cooked flavor of shelf-stable milk.
