Does Skippy Peanut Butter Have Partially Hydrogenated Oil

Skippy ingredients.

Skippy peanut butter does not have partially hydrogenated oil or trans fat. However, it does contain fully hydrogenated oil, which is still a highly processed ingredient.

In normal Skippy peanut butter, whether Creamy or Extra Chunky, they use hydrogenated vegetable oil to prevent separation. The word hydrogenated has long been a red flag in ingredient listsbecause partially hydrogenated oils contain trans fat.

Trans fat is known to be the worst kind of fat, even worse than saturated fat. Here is a page from the American Heart Association on why trans fat is so unhealthy.

Trans fat raises your LDL cholesterol, while lowering your HDL cholesterol and increasing your risk of heart disease and stroke.

However, in recent years, the FDA banned partially hydrogenated oils. So, nowadays, what you get in Skippy and other peanut butter is fully hydrogenated vegetable oils, mixed with other vegetable oils.

This means Skippy today does not contain trans fat. That said, some people still worry about the hydrogenated oil in Skippy. Its a very processed ingredientthats for sure. I wrote a bit more about it in my post about Crisco.

If youre concerned about the hydrogenated oils in Skippy peanut butter, you can switch to Skippy Natural. Skippy Natural does not contain hydrogenated oils.

Jif Extra Crunchy Peanut Butter

Ingredients: Roasted Peanuts and Sugar, Contains 2% or Less of: Molasses, Fully Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils , Mono and Diglycerides, Salt.

One of the best-selling peanut butters in America is made with fully hydrogenated vegetable oilsextremely hard, wax-like fats made by forcing as much hydrogen as possible onto the carbon backbone of fat molecules. To obtain a manageable consistency, food manufacturers often blend the hard fat with unhydrogenated liquid fats. Remember that next time you’re making Junior’s sandwich or want some high protein snacks.

Is Jif Peanut Butter Made In China

First sold in 1932, Skippy is currently manufactured by Hormel Foods, which bought the brand from Unilever in 2013. It is the best selling brand of peanut butter in China and second only to the J.M. Smucker Companys Jif brand worldwide.Skippy Product type Peanut butter Website

    Jif Varieties And Marketing Campaigns

Of course, for all of the initial fighting with the FDA, the predominant ingredient in Jif is still peanuts and the brand certainly uses a lot of them. It’s estimated that 188 billion peanuts are needed to manufacture Jif peanut butter. According to data obtained from the J.M. Smucker Company, one in every 10 peanuts grown in the United States winds up in a jar of Jif

As with many well-known American brands, JIF has engaged in a number of successful marketing campaigns that have helped cement their status on grocery store shelves. A blue Kangaroo named Jifaroo was used as the mascot when the brand was introduced in 1958, but the marsupial disappeared from advertising in the 1960s . Jif’s ad campaign “Choosy mothers choose Jif” helped make Jif the best-selling peanut butter in the country, a position that it has held consistently since 1981 .

In 1974, the first variety of Jif was introduced to the market Jif Extra Crunchy. It was followed by Simply Jif in 1991, and Jif Reduced Fat in 1995. Today, Jif also offers peanut butter made with honey instead of sugar, peanut butter with no sugar at all, and even peanut butter with Omega 3 fatty acids in the form of fish oil.

Most flavors of Skippy peanut butter have about 3 grams of total sugar per serving . However, some of that is natural sugar from the peanuts. The Skippy flavor with the least sugar is No Sugar Added Skippy, along with the Natural 1/3 Less Sodium & Sugar flavor.

Here is a table showing the sugar content of various Skippy flavors:

Is Jif Peanut Butter With Omega

Jifs Omega-3 Peanut Butter is easily the weirdest of the peanut butters they sell. On the outside it appears pretty normal, but once you read the ingredients things get strange. The last two ingredients and the ones added for Omega-3 are Anchovy and Sardine Oil and Tilapia Gelatin. In simpler terms, Jif Omega-3 Peanut Butter contains FISH ingredients. Therefore, Jif Peanut Butter with Omega-3 is definitely not vegan!

    What About The Sugar

All of Jifs peanut butters contain sugar. Some vegans choose not to eat processed sugar because its often processed with whats called a bone char filtration process.

To remove impurities from the sugar and to make it bright white, animal bones are used. There arent any bone particles in the actual sugar, but for some people, they consider that the contact with the bones means that the sugar isnt vegan.

If youre worried about that, why not make your own peanut butter? Heres an easy how-to guide on how to make peanut butter.

You just blend roasted, salted peanuts in a high-speed blender or a food processor until creamy).

Or you can buy organic peanut butter! If sugar is organic, its not allowed to be filtered through bone char. So if you find a brand of organic peanut butter that uses sugar, you should be good to go!

  • Which Is Better Jif Or Skippy

Both Jif and SKIPPY peanut butters are primarily made with roasted peanuts and salt, and both contain emulsifiers and added sugars .

Looking at the big picture, the variations when it comes to the nutrient content are so slight that both essentially offer very similar nutritional benefits.

Both brands certainly have their pros and cons.

Jif is made with mono and diglycerides, which may be associated with some unsavory health outcomes when consumed in large quantities. But this peanut butter also scores higher when it comes to the nutrients that it provides. Most notably, Jif provides 17 milligrams of bone-building calcium, while SKIPPY does not have any.

On the other hand, SKIPPY contains less saturated fat and still contains ample amounts of nutrients like protein.

At the end of the day, it comes down to personal preference, as neither appears to be significantly “better” or “worse” than the other.

If you really want to play it safe, try skipping both classic options and try a natural version of peanut butter to avoid the emulsifiers and added sugars all together. You may be pleasantly surprised that you don’t even miss the taste that these added ingredients provide when all is said and done. Check out The 20 Top Peanut ButtersRanked! for some great options.

    Skippy Peanut Butter Ingredients

Heres what I notice from these ingredients:

    • Skippy Peanut Butter is mostly peanuts. Peanuts are a whole plant food, rich in healthy fats, a bit of protein, and some healthy vitamins and minerals.
    • Most flavors of Skippy have added sugar. Its not a lot of sugar per serving, but almost every flavor of Skippy has added sugar. This makes it more processed and higher in refined carbs than a more natural peanut butter with only peanuts and salt. Reduced Fat Skippy also has corn syrup solids, another sweetener.
    • Skippy Peanut Butter has added oil. Some flavors have palm oil, which is high in saturated fat, which most health orgs recommend limiting. Other flavors have a mix of hydrogenated vegetable oils. In either case, these oils are highly processed and calorically dense. Not the healthiest.
    • Skippy Peanut Butter has added salt. If youre trying to keep your sodium intake very low, you may need to limit your portions of Skippy, as it does have added salt. There is a Low Sodium flavor, however. See below for more details on sodium content.
