    Peter McGuinness, president of Chobani, said the company is introducing Chobani Probiotica plant-based, fermented organic drink and Chobani Complete, with 25g of protein to the aisles.

    Chobani Probiotic drinks start with a base of whole grain oats and fruit juice and are fermented with a blend of probiotic cultures to support digestive and immune health. They are then woven together with a blend of organic fruit and herbal extracts with a light effervescence.

    Chobani Probiotic drinks are available in Lemon Ginger, Pineapple Turmeric, Peach Mint, and Cherry Hibiscus tea .

    All Chobani Probiotic beverages are plant-based, non-dairy, certified organic and are made with non-GMO ingredients. Each bottle has 80 calories with 11g of sugar, and contains billions of probiotics.

    We’ve Been Working On This For About A Year Because It’s Hard To Do

    Chobani president Peter McGuinness did not share how Chobani eliminated all of the naturally occurring milk sugar in its new Chobani Zero range, but told FoodNavigator-USA that non-fat milk is first ultra-filtered to remove most of the lactose, while selected yogurt cultures then effectively eat or fully consume any remaining sugar.

    Chobani then adds allulose – a tooth-friendly rare sugar with the texture and bulk of regular sugar that has been steadily gaining in popularity following the FDAs decision to exclude it from the total and added sugars declarations on the Nutrition Facts panel – and the high intensity natural sweeteners monk fruit and stevia extract .

    Found naturally in plants such as figs and raisins, allulose is produced on a commercial scale via a complex, multi-step process typically starting with corn starch, and is in high demand because it has 70% of the sweetness of sucrose but only 0.4 calories per gram.

    As a result, Chobani Zero has just 60 calories per 5.3oz cup – the lowest calorie count in the segment, claimed McGuinness – but still has 11-12g protein, depending on the flavor.

    Greek yogurt has gone from health food fad to inescapable food phenomenon in just a few short years. In record time, it has practically replaced non-Greek yogurt — sort of. How “Greek” is the Greek yogurt we Americans have come to worship? Not so Greek after all, it turns out, at least according to a new lawsuit.

    The New York Post reported on June 19 that plaintiffs Barry Stoltz, of Westchester, and Allan Chang, of Queens, are suing Greek yogurt producers Chobani and Fage in two separate class action suits. The men claim that Chobani and Fage are purposefully misleading customers by hiding the amount of sugar in their products, and by calling themselves “Greek.”

    Stoltz and Chang claim that by labeling yogurt as “0%,” the companies are confusing customers by implying their products contain zero sugar. A similar case was dismissed in California last month, because there was no evidence that customers were buying yogurt under that assumption. The lawsuits also take issue with Chobani listing evaporated cane juice as a sweetening agent, when it is the same thing as sugar. Chobani lists sugar content in its nutritional information, but does not list sugar in its ingredients. It only lists evaporated cane juice.” According the the New York Post, the suit claims:

    Each Container Is Made With Live Probiotics

    Contrary to what you might think, not all yogurts will provide you with gut-healthy probioticsthe live bacteria that scientists believe may play a role in lowering your incidence of obesity and levels of inflammation. That’s because some products are heat-treated after fermentation, which will kill most of the beneficial active cultures.     Consumers recognize the nutrition in dairy, said McGuinness, but they are also paying closer attention to its sugar content .

    “So we said, ‘Hey, if we can come up with a zero sugar yogurt that’s lactose free with only 60 calories the lowest in the category that still has 11 to 12 grams of protein, plus it has billions of probiotics, and its natural, well that’s better food for more people.’

    Regular Chobani yogurts have around 14g sugar, Chobanis Less Sugar range has around 9g, while high-protein Chobani Complete has around 6-7g, said McGuinness, who said Chobani Zero was differentiated both within Chobanis portfolio, and the yogurt category as a whole.

    They are all quite differentiated. Less Sugar is not cannibalizing our core range, which is still growing in the double digits year on year although its been on the market for 13 years. Chobani Less Sugar has been on the market for two and a half years and it’s doing well.

    Then for Chobani Complete, were not really marketing that as low in sugar, although it has no added sugar, its all about the protein and fiber, and probiotics. So, Chobani Zero is something entirely different: on the packaging, we’re really homing in on the zero sugar and popping the 60 calories and lactose free .
