How To Use A Sugar And Coconut Oil Scrub

To make the scrub simply combine the sugar and coconut oil to your desired consistency. If your coconut oil is hard, you may need to warm it enough to change to liquid for easier mixing. Start with 2 parts sugar to 1 part coconut oil. So an example would be 1 cup of sugar and1/2 cup of coconut oil.

Depending on your desired consistency, add more sugar for a coarser feeling, or add more oil for a more liquid substance. If you are new to scrubbing, you may want to use less sugar until your skin becomes used to it.

  • Shower with warm water to relax your skin and open your pores
  • Use body wash or cleanser as you normally would to prepare your skin to be scrubbed with your coconut oil and sugar scrub
  • Once the body wash is rinsed off, scrub the desired areas of your skin with your homemade coconut oil and sugar scrub
  • Switch to cold water after rinsing off the scrub to close your pores and tighten your skin
  • Dry off your body completely with a towel
  • Apply lotion to your freshly exfoliated skin to trap moisture in your skin
  • Homemade sugar and coconut oil scrubs are very easy to use but do not use them two days in a row. Exfoliating your skin too frequently can leave it dry and damaged.

What Coconut Oil Does For The Skin

Coconut oil is used for both hair care and skincare. Coconut oil can be found in any grocery store and can also be used for cooking. These are the benefits of using coconut oil in your skincare routine:

    • Coconut oil is anti-inflammatory and can help assist with body acne and reduce redness.
    • Coconut oil is extremely moisturizing and will help your skin retain its moisture
    • Coconut oil can help repair cracks in the skin because of how well it keeps moisture locked in
    • Plumps the skin to diminish wrinkles and fine lines
    • Coconut oil is full of vitamins that are healthy for your skin like vitamin E, vitamin K, and lauric acid

While coconut oil is good for retaining moisture, it should only be used on the body because it can clog the pores on the face and cause acne.

    Coconut Oil Hand Scrub

    DIY Coconut Oil Sugar Scrub

Pretty much everyone can benefit from a nice hand scrub, particularly in the winter months where hands become dry easily. A hand scrub also comes in handy for those who have to regularly wash hands like healthcare workers, artists, chefs, and, of coursegardeners!

Using a daily hand scrub after a day of work is an excellent way to stimulate and moisturize hands before bed. I like to use moisturizing coconut oil and a blend of ylang-ylang, carrot seed oil, lavender, geranium, and rose essential oils.

When Should I Use Coconut Body Scrub

My Coconut Body Scrub Recipe can be used anytime you desire a spa treatment to get rid of dead skin and reveal younger, silky soft skin.

The ideal time to use a body scrub is after cleansing your skin and before getting out of the shower or bath.

Since a body scrub is used during a shower or bath, the skin is clean and supple from the warm water. The warm water opens your pores and allows the exfoliation of the sugar to work its magic.

A Word of Caution: Be careful when applying body scrubs to the feet while in the shower since it can cause them to become slippery!

Why Rub Used Coffee Grounds All Over Your Body

This is one of my favorite parts of this recipe using coffee grinds in homemade body scrub! Its my favorite use of used coffee grinds too! Exfoliating

Coffee grinds are a softer exfoliating scrub that sloughs off dead skin with antioxidants and the caffeine that can improve collagen production in the skin.

How Long Does Coconut Sugar Scrub Last

Homemade sugar scrubs can easily last for 6 months IF they are kept in air-tight containers, free from extra moisture, out of direct sunlight and in a cool and dry location. Keeping these in your shower is not the ideal location for making your scrubs last longer. Whoops.

However, I will say that I have never had a sugar scrub go bad before I had a chance to use it.

You will know a sugar scrub is bad because it will smell rancid . If your scrub smells bad, don’t use it. Throw it away and make a new one. Thankfully, these are so inexpensive to make, it is really no big deal.

I make small batches of my scrub to ensure that I am able to use it all before it goes bad.

How To Use Your Homemade Sugar Scrub

Using your homemade sugar scrub after showering while your skin is still wet would be best. First, apply a small amount of the scrub to damp skin and gently rub it using circular motions. After you finish the peeling, rinse the scrub off thoroughly with lukewarm water and apply your body lotion or nourishing body oil.

Remember that coconut oil will solidify when cooled. So, if you want to use your homemade sugar scrub, take it out of the fridge one hour or so before to make it softer and easier to use. You don’t need to wait for it to become too soft, as it will soften and melt when in contact with your skin.

It’s also important to keep in mind that you shouldn’t use your DIY sugar scrub every day. Over-exfoliation can irritate your skin and damage its natural moisture barrier, leading to acne, rough, dry, and dehydrated skin that’s easily sensitized.

Therefore, it would be best to use it once a week. If your skin is already sensitive, use it once or twice a month. And finally, if you have body acne, eczema, or any other inflammatory skin condition, you shouldn’t use body scrubs at all.

If you have any other skin problems and are unsure if you should use a body scrub, it’s best to consult a dermatologist.

Benefits Of A Diy Sugar Scrub With Coconut Oil

Regular exfoliation with body scrubs can help you improve the health and appearance of your skin in several ways. Body scrubs remove the layer of dead skin cells from your skin’s surface, making it smoother and brighter. Scrubbing also affects collagen production, which can help your skin stay firm, tight, and bouncy.

In addition, sugar in your body scrub will also gently massage the skin, improving circulation and blood flow to the skin surface, making it youthful and dewy. Plus, both white and brown sugar are natural sources of glycolic acid, giving you an additional exfoliating effect and hydrating the skin.

Another perk of sugar body scrubs is the better absorption and effectiveness of skincare products you apply post-exfoliation. With the dead skin layer removed from the top of your skin, your body lotion or moisturizer will penetrate deeper into the skin.

    Coconut Oil And Essential Oils

This is where you can express yourself. Basically, go little on the wild side. Choose any blend of essential oils that makes you happy and suits the purpose.

For example, lavender can calm your skin, peppermint is great to invigorate, and citrus to inspire. You can choose whatever works for you. You can even mix a couple of essential oils into the same homemade coconut oil scrub.

With that in mind, here are some ideas about what to use.

For a citrus hand and body scrub, you need ½ cup of coconut oil, almost one cup of granulated sugar, 20 drops of sweet orange essential oil, and 10 drops of lemon essential oil.

If you want a peppermint foot scrub, instead of lemon and orange essential oils, add just 20 drops of peppermint essential oil.
