Opinions differ on the importance of boiling the hummingbird food mixture. We always do boil the water to neutralize some impurities that might be in the water or sugar. Besides, sugar dissolves more easily in hot water. But as soon as the feeder is outdoors, contaminants will get into the water anyway, brought by hummingbirds, insects or just a breeze. So at best, boiling the mixture keeps it fresh a little longer. If your water is good and your time is limited, washing the feeder thoroughly and often is more important than boiling the sugar water mixture.
Using really hot water will usually suffice to dissolve the sugar. However, if you plan on making extra hummingbird sugar water to store in the fridge or you have so-so water quality, then its best to boil.

Can I Use Honey In The Nectar Recipe
No. Adding honey to this nectar recipe will not help and can actually be dangerous to hummingbirds. This is because when honey mixes with water, it ferments rapidly, which spoils the nectar and creates an environment that lets bacteria and fungus thrive.
If hummingbirds feed on rotten nectar, it can lead to a deadly infection that makes their tongue swell. It makes their tongue so large that they have trouble even fitting it back into their bill. Unfortunately, this sickness almost always leads to a slow death.
And if your still not convinced, think about this fact:
Hummingbirds dont eat honey naturally! Have you ever observed or heard about a hummingbird raiding a honey bee nest? Honeybees are not even native to North America, so at no point in history did hummingbirds evolve to eat honey or have access to the stuff except for the last few hundred years.

How To Make Hummingbird Water Sugar Solution:
Add your water and sugar to a pan and start to boil. Stir the mixture as youre waiting for the mixture to start boiling, to dissolve the sugar.
The purpose of boiling the hummingbird nectar is to release any chlorine that might be in the water and to kill any bacteria or mold spores that might be in the sugar, which will cause your nectar to ferment and have to be changed sooner.
Boiling for about 2 minutes will be long enough to accomplish this. If you continue to boil the water, you will boil away more of the water and end up with a sweeter nectar. The hummingbirds will like the sweeter nectar, but bees and wasps will also be more attracted to it and may keep your hummingbirds from using the feeder.
If you make more nectar than you can use at one time, you can keep the extra nectar in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks before using it up.
Clear nectar will work just fine if you have red on your feeder. There is controversy about whether or not the red dye in food coloring is harmful to the hummingbirds, so be on the safe side and leave it out of your homemade water sugar solution. If there is no red on your feeder you can tie strips of red ribbon to the feeder to attract hummingbirds.
The sugar in the nectar will ferment as it ages and mold will grow in the nectar and on your feeder if the nectar isnt changed often enough.
If you notice your nectar starting to look cloudy, you know its time to change it.

And what about lower concentrations?
The more diluted the nectar, the more consumption of nectar is needed to satisfy a hummingbird’s energy requirements.
McWhorter and Martez del Rio found that, dependingon sugar concentration, Broad-tailed Hummingbirds consumed volumes of nectar ranging from 1.6 to 5.4 times their body mass per day.
Weaker concentrations are less attractive to hummers & you’ll find they may just stop coming to your feeder to find a better, concentrated source.
In addition, because hummingbirds will have to consume more of a dilute nectar to get the same energy from a concentrated one, their bodies will have to work harder.
The rate of energy assimilation may be constrained by excess water elimination.
