Converting Regular Recipes To Low Carb With Brown Sugar

How To Make Sugar-Free Brown Sugar

You can easily use this brown sugar sub in all your recipes that call for real brown sugar.

If you have a regular recipe and you just want to switch out the regular brown sugar for your homemade sugar-free brown sugar, youre not going to do it equally.

I repeat, do not just swap them out, cup for cup.

Its best to start with just a little more than half of what the recipe calls for, taste test it, and tweak from there.

This homemade brown sugar alternative is a bit sweeter and you may not need as much as when using real sugar.

White Sugar Plus Maple Syrup

Traditionally, brown sugar is made using a mix of granulated white sugar and molasses.

If you dont have molasses on hand, you can easily swap it out for maple syrup with almost no change to your recipes final product.

Combine 1 cup of granulated white sugar with 1 tablespoon of pure maple syrup to make a brown sugar substitute that can fool even the most sophisticated palette.

Summary Combine 1 cup of granulated sugar with 1 tablespoon of maple syrup to make an almost-perfect brown sugar substitute.

I love this recipe because it’s one of the easiest recipes you will ever make and requires just two ingredients. Unsulphured Molasses and your favorite Granular sugar substitute of choice I love to use Xylitol*, Erythritol or Lakanto Classic sweeteners. You can also make this with a mix of sweeteners. I like to keep things simple so I usually use one sweetener.

* Xylitol is safe in humans but not safe in dogs. Please keep away from your pets or use Erythritol instead.

Before you ask… Aren’t molasses made from sugar? Yes they are but the amount of molasses used in this recipe is so little compared to the regular Brown Sugar and will be negligible when used in a Whole recipe and portioned.

What Is Brown Sugar

Hy

Most of the brown sugar available in grocery stores is simply granulated sugar that has been mixed with molasses. Molasses adds richness, moisture, and a depth of flavor which is what makes it so tasty and delicious in baked goods.

Both granulated sugar and molasses are derived from sugar cane and are naturally gluten free. While sugar is not a health food, it is considered safe to consume on a gluten-free diet.

The only difference between light and dark brown sugar is the amount of added molasses. Light brown sugar contains 3.5 percent molasses and dark brown sugar contains 6.5 percent.

Natural brown sugar is a less processed form of brown sugar. It comes from unrefined sugar that has some residual molasses content leftover. This type of brown sugar is not as widely available.

White Sugar + Agave Nectar

Can you make brown sugar without molasses? Yes, although using molasses gives you the best outcome. Using agave nectar is another option for a liquid sweetener. It works in a pinch.

To make a form of brown sugar using white sugar and agave nectar, mix 1 cup white sugar with 2 tablespoons of agave nectar until fully incorporated. Use as a 1 to 1 substitute.

What Is The Difference Between Brown Sugar And Cane Sugar

Brown sugar is simple. It consists of white granulated sugar to which a certain amount of molasses has been added for flavor and appearance. Cane sugar is more complex as there are multiple types of sugar that can be fall under the cane sugar umbrella. Examples include sucanat, turbinado and evaporated cane sugar..

Examples Of Alternative Sugars Considered Gluten Free

  • Instead of using sugars, you can substitute them with sweeteners that are considered a hundred percent gluten-free. They include:
  • Equal-which has almost the same components as pure sugar.
  • Sugar twin- it contains saccharin that has dextrose and behaves just like regular sugar.
  • Sweet and low-which are a hundred percent gluten-free.

Saccharin The Oldest Artificial Sweetener

Keto sugar-free brown sugar

Saccharin, the sweetener sold in pink packets under the brand name Sweet ‘N Low, is calorie-free and is about 300 to 500 times sweeter than sugar, per the Sweet N Low website. It was the first artificial sweetener, with chemists discovering it as a derivative of coal tar by mistake in 1879, according to Encyclopedia Britannica.

If youve been using artificial sweeteners since the 1970s, you may remember a previous warning label that warned of saccharin increasing the risk for cancer. But rest assured it’s safe. The research that prompted the label was done on animals, and further studies by the National Toxicology Program of the National Institutes of Health concluded that saccharin shouldnt be on the list of potential carcinogens. Saccharin is currently FDA-approved.

A 132-lb individual would need to consume 45 tabletop packets of the artificial sweetener per day to reach the ADI of 15 mg of saccharin per kg of body weight per day, according to the FDA.

Allulose A New Artificial Sweetener Thats No Longer Considered An Added Sugar

Allulose is an extremely low-calorie sweetener that occurs naturally in small amounts in wheat, raisins, dried figs, brown sugar, and molasses, according to the FDA. Marketed under the brand name Dolcia Prima , it has 90 percent fewer calories than sucrose, while being 70 percent as sweet.

You can find Dolcia Prima in Magic Spoon Cereal, which is sold online and expect to see it soon in beverages, desserts, candy, yogurt, and other treats. Thats because allulose got a big boost from the FDA in April 2019, when the agency declared it can be excluded from the total and added sugars listed on nutrition labels going forward.

The latest data suggests that allulose is different from other sugars in that it is not metabolized by the human body in the same way as table sugar, says Susan Mayne, PhD, director of FDAs Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. It has fewer calories, produces only negligible increases in blood glucose or insulin levels, and does not promote dental decay.

Under the revised guidance, manufacturers can use a caloric value of 0.4 calories per gram to calculate the total number of calories per serving of allulose, instead of the previous 4 calories per gram. The sweetener still must be included in the total carbohydrates listed, though. While allulose isnt on the list of FDA-approved sweeteners, the agency hasnt questioned notices submitted by manufacturers that the sweetener is generally recognized as safe.

Should You Choose One Over The Other

If you have diabetes, brown sugar is no healthier than white sugar.

Keep in mind that any kind of added sugar should be limited as part of a healthy, well-rounded diet. Excess sugar intake is linked to a higher risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and fatty liver disease .

Some research suggests that excess sugar also impairs insulin sensitivity, which refers to how responsive your body is to insulin. This hormone regulates your blood sugar levels.

Damaged insulin sensitivity reduces your ability to transport sugar from your bloodstream to your cells efficiently (

9 ).

The American Heart Association suggests limiting added sugars to under 6 teaspoons per day for women and under 9 teaspoons per day for men .

If you have diabetes, curbing your sugar intake as much as possible can improve your blood sugar control while promoting overall health. To develop an appropriate diet plan, consult a healthcare professional or registered dietitian.

summary

Both brown and white sugar are considered added sugars, which are associated with decreased insulin sensitivity and a higher risk of several chronic conditions.

Despite slight differences in taste, brown and white sugar have a very similar nutrient profile and effect on blood sugar levels.

Therefore, brown sugar does not provide any benefits to people with diabetes.

Everyone but especially people with this condition should moderate their sugar intake for optimal health.

Why Does Brown Sugar Get Hard

To understand how to renew your sugar, you first need to know why it gets hard.

Brown sugar is refined sugar infused with molasses. Thats where it gets its lovely brown coloring.

The sugar crystals in brown sugar become hard when exposed to air.

When the moisture content evaporates, it turns your fluffy brown sugar into a solid sugar brick.

As soon as you rip open your bag of brown sugar, youve started the hardening process.

Dont worry, it doesnt mean that your brown sugar has gone bad! It simply means that it has lost its moisture content.

To revive your brown sugar, you need to infuse it with moisture.

You can either add some heat from the oven or microwave or get more creative.

What Is A Brown Sugar Replacement

    • Brown sugar replacements provide the aroma, sweetness, and texture of regular brown sugar, but without all the calories and sugar content. They are divided into two groups: zero-calories and sugar-free, and reduced-calories and NOT sugar-free. They taste, smell, and feel soft and moist like LIGHT brown sugar. Read my Complete Guide to Brown Sugars HERE to learn about the different types.

    • As you’ll see below, brown sugar alternatives in group 1 are one-to-one substitutes for regular brown sugar, meaning you can directly swap the volume of regular sugar called for in a recipe. Brown sugar blends in group 2 are two-to-one sugar replacements, so if you want to sub one cup of brown sugar, you’ll need half a cup of the alternative. But be aware that they won’t give the exact same result in your recipes. They are especially useful when baking, like when you want a chewier cookie or a moist cake.

Since muscovado sugar is an unrefined brown sugar, the best substitutes are jaggery, panela, rapadela, kokuto, or Sucanat. They can be substituted in equal amounts. The next best substitute would be dark brown sugar. However, it has a finer texture, lower molasses content, and milder taste.

You will also find it in some of your favorite diet soft drinks, such as Coca-Cola Zero Sugar and Diet Mountain Dew. The FDA recommends an ADI of 15 mg or less of Ace-K per kilogram of body weight per day.

A 132-pound individual would need to consume 23 tabletop packets of the artificial sweetener per day to reach that limit.

How To Soften Brown Sugar In The Oven

The oven method is quick, easy, and one of the most effective ways to revive your brown sugar.

With your oven set at a low temperature , place your brown sugar in an oven-safe bowl.

After a few minutes, carefully remove your bowl and try and loosen it up with a spoon.

If its still hard, pop it back in the oven for a few more minutes and constantly check in on it.

If youre in a hurry, avoid the temptation to kick up the ovens temperature. Higher temperatures will cause the sugar to melt.

    Sugar Free Brown Sugar Recipe

December 3, 2013 By Gwen Brown

A sugar-free brown sugar recipe is not something you really ever think about until you are working on going low carb. And the holidays hit. And then it ranks right up there as a need next to toilet paper and oxygen.

Waitthey MAKE that already, you might say. There is a very tasty product called Just Like Brown Sugar that is sugar free! I get excitedI rush over to Amazon to view said product. And I realize that there is no way that I am going to pay upwards of $20 for a little one pound pouch of the stuff. No. Way.

And then this brilliant Trim Healthy Mama named Margaret comes up with a totally simple recipe, and said I could share it all with you. And suddenly the world all makes sense again. My kitchen can smell like spice cookies and we can all go caroling together in the snow. Except for not that last part because it never snows down here in the South. But we can TOTALLY do the spice cookies now. And that nearly makes up for the no snow thing.

Today on Trim Healthy Tuesday, were going to make our OWN sugar free brown sugar!

A huge, HUGE thank you to Margaret for making winter baking and goodies possible for this mostly sugar-free Trim Healthy Mama.

It really couldnt be simpler. Just add a bit of blackstrap molasses to your sugar-substitute of choice. You can use erythritol or xylitol as the base. You may also try it with Just Like Sugar, but Ive not experimented with that one yet.
