Splenda Is One Of The Nations Top Selling Artificial Sweetener

It is more chlorinated than aspartame and is responsible for causing many adverse health effects. Sucralose, the chemical name for Splenda, was created in 1976 and has been implemented in the food industry as an alternative to sugar since 1991.

Digesting Real Vs Artificial Sugars
When we eat sugar, it moves from the digestive system into the bloodstream, increasing our blood sugar levels. The pancreas has the job of secreting hormones into the blood to regulate our blood sugar levels. The pancreas is like a factory that turns sugars into something our bodies can use, and the factory slows down when the sugar or sweetener does not give us much energy. Artificial sweeteners do not increase blood sugar levels or insulin production, like real sugars do. This causes the pancreas to respond differently to the artificial sugars, because they give the pancreas nearly nothing to respond to. The consumption of artificial sweeteners can therefore lead to abnormal pancreas functioning and insulin levels, in addition to changes in other functions that affect our metabolism, which may put us at risk for related illnesses such as type 2 diabetes.

How To Use The Best Low Carb Sweetener In Baking
First let me say that how one combines sweeteners is completely individual. Everyones taste buds perceive sweetness in a unique way.
This is how I sweeten my baked goods
If a regular recipe calls for 1-2 cups of sugar, I typically use 1/3 2/3 cup of granulated erythritol and then increase the sweetness with approximately 1/4 1 teaspoon stevia glycerite. Why? For me, erythritol produces a very sharp taste and burning feeling at the back of my throat. Ive found that using a minimal amount of erythritol and augmenting with super-sweet stevia counteracts both the sharp taste from the erythritol and mitigates any bitterness from the stevia. Using erythritol and stevia together lets me use less erythritol, which saves me money.
Is erythritol the perfect sugar substitute? No, but its a pretty darn close! Drawbacks? Its expensive, it tends to recrystallize resulting in a crunchy texture in frostings, puddings, and cheesecakes. This tendency also causes hardening upon cooling, ie. a thin crust on cakes or a very hard caramel sauce when cool. Trying to melt it, like one would sugar, to pour into a meringue frosting is disastrous as it seizes.
Mixing erythritol and stevia together produces a nice punch of sweetness!

Why You Should Be Mindful Of Sugar Substitute Consumption
Using a sugar replacement with an intensely sweet taste and no calories can have a downside. Theres at least one study that showed that when sweetness and calories were not balanced, the brain tries to balance things out by stimulating the appetite to consume more calories.
The study mentioned above was based on a popular artificial sweetener. But, Ive found that sweet foods do tend to trigger me into overeating. So I recommend limiting keto sweeteners for occasional treats, especially for those who need to lose a lot of weight.
As one breaks away from sugar by moving to a keto diet, sweet foods tend to become less desirable. Therefore, the amount of sugar substitutes used tends to diminish when following a low carb lifestyle long term.

Do All Artificial Sweeteners Have An Aftertaste
For some people, different artificial sweeteners bind to several varieties of bitter receptors, and some of those chemicals can trigger the receptor for a long time compared to sugar, which results in a more pronounced aftertaste. Artificial sweeteners taste awful to some people, but not to everybody.
Why Is It Hard To Give Up Sugar
It may take some time to readjust your taste buds to living sugar-free, and is it any wonder? Sugar is now found in 80% of products on our supermarket shelves.
What is astounding is the type of foods that have added sugar. You might expect it to be in desserts, granola, and cereals but tuna? Soup? Bacon? There are also several different names of sugar which just makes it even more confusing when youre trying to understand reading food labels.
But the real problem is how sugar affects the brain and how it lights up our reward center. As we eat more, we become accustomed to the reward and so seek more.
But by replacing sugar with delicious low-carb sweet treats, you can help reduce your cravings.

Fresh Or Frozen Fruit
Coming in at the number one way to sweeten your food and drinks is by using fresh or frozen fruit.
Fruit doesnt have any empty calories, which makes it an ideal sweetener, Taylor says.
Try sweetening oatmeal by mixing in banana or applesauce, adding berries to plain Greek yogurt and sweetening smoothies with frozen fruit. Another option is to add natural flavorings like vanilla or almond extract, cocoa powder and spices like cinnamon and clove.
I grew up with a diet high in sugar. When I cut down on added sugars and sweeteners, I started enjoying the natural sweetness of fresh berries and melon, Taylor says. Thats when my sugar cravings started to fade.
Where Can You Use These Sweeteners
Most people love to use sugar in their daily coffee/tea or in their desserts. For a lot of people, these items do not taste the same without the hint of sweetness to them. Try to appease all your cravings at home, whether it is coffee, juices, milkshakes, sweets, or everyday cooking. You will have more control over what goes into your body and you can use your favourite artificial sweetener over sugar. And if you are dining out, remember to carry your sweetener with you, so that you can use it, when needed.

The price of obesity in the United States isnt small, either. Its estimated that the annual health care cost of obesity-related illnesses is $190 billion, representing ~21% of the annual medical spendings in the United States.
It is evident that a lower-sugar diet is key to weight management and healthy living, but we all need to satisfy our cravings once in a while. And if the addictive nature of sugar makes it hard to stop ourselves, is there a way for us to have our cake and eat it too? The answer is yes, and the biotechnology upstart Amyris has the solution.
Amyris supports a sustainable future by producing a wide array of molecules from engineered organisms and renewably-sourced carbon from plants.. They are committed to their No Compromise vision of a world in which both people and the planet benefit through better sustainable products. Their portfolio includes antimalarial drugs, clean skincare products, and now, their latest No Compromise product: the zero-calorie sweetener, Purecane.
Back in 2016, Amyris CEO John Melo felt that it was time for the company to have another growth spurt. On the lookout for the next big thing, Melo realized that big food and beverage companies were pursuing a new strategy of sugar reduction. This was in response to a huge consumer backlash against not just sugar and its negative effects on our bodies, but also against chemically-derived sweeteners.
Sugar And The Keto Diet
Sugar is like keto repellent. When we eat it, our ability to burn fat scurries away like a frightened squirrel. Some explanation will help.
When you eat a ketogenic diet, you consume 55 to 70 percent of your calories from fat, 20 to 35 percent from protein, and less than 10 percent from carbohydrates.4 Keeping your macronutrients in these ratios allows you to enter the unique fat-burning state called ketosis.
Keeping net carbs low is the number one rule of keto. . Keeping net carbs low keeps blood sugar low, which in turn keeps the hormone insulin low. With insulin low, your body can happily access stored fat for energy.4
Conversely, eating sugar raises insulin levels and inhibits fat burning. Eating sugar is a surefire way to kick yourself out of ketosis.
Now lets talk about how to stay keto while you bake, sprinkle, and sweeten.

The Truth On Artificial Sweeteners
Sweetness and Light
No getting around it, we Americans have a sweet tooth. Most of us eat the equivalent of 20 teaspoons of sugar a day. True, you’re probably not sucking on sugar cubes throughout the day, but you are probably downing more than your fair share of sugary cereals, snacks, sodas, ice cream .. and the list goes on and on.
For the average person, there’s nothing wrong with sugar per se, unless all the sweet foods in your daily diet are keeping you from eating and drinking the nutritious foods you need. But for people who are trying to lose weight, or have to watch their blood sugar because of diabetes, too much sugar can be a problem. That’s where artificial sweeteners can come in handy. These low-calorie sweeteners, reports the International Food Information Council, are safe to use, provide sweetness without calories, and provide a choice of sweet foods.
A 1998 survey conducted by the Calorie Control Council reported that 144 million American adults routinely eat and drink low-calorie, sugar-free products such as desserts and artificially sweetened sodas. The FDA has approved five artificial sweeteners:
Kava says that since sweeteners are so much sweeter than sugar, a very small amount is needed to achieve the same sweetness one gets from sugar. “If used normally, the amounts you take in are so minuscule as to be of no concern at all.”
Sugar Substitutes To Avoid
Evidence suggests that we shouldnt be fooled into thinking that zero-calorie artificial sweeteners with zero grams of sugar are healthy. Both human and animal studies continue to reveal that frequent consumption of diet soda or artificial sweeteners is associated with greater body mass index , obesity and metabolic syndrome.
What are the worst sugar substitutes? One is high fructose corn syrup, which is usually produced from genetically modified corn.
Fructose is a simple sugar that is rapidly metabolized by the liver, causing a sugar high. Researchers believe this quick-acting sugar leads to increased storage of fat in the liver, resulting in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, digestive upset and atherosclerosis.
Another popular one is sucralose, which is 600 times sweeter than sugar and may contribute to an addiction for overly sweet foods and drinks. A study published in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health found that cooking with sucralose at high temperatures can generate dangerous chloropropanols a toxic class of compounds.
Human and rodent studies demonstrate that sucralose may also alter glucose, insulin and glucagon-like peptide 1 levels.
There are many artificial sweeteners on the market today, including:
Which is the safest artificial sweetener? It depends on what you consider to be artificial.
A sweetener in extract form, such as stevia or monk fruit, is a good choice if youre looking for a zero-calorie option.

Erythritols Glycemic Index Is Much Lower Than An Equivalent Amount Of Table Sugar Even After Controlling For Caloric Content
One of the reasons why table sugar is so harmful comes down to its glycemic index: the rate at which it causes a spike in blood sugar.
Erythritol, calorie for calorie, does not cause the same rapid spike in blood sugar.
This combines with its vastly lower caloric content when matched with sugar for sweetness. The result is a sweetener that is much easier on your metabolic system and much better for your metabolic health.
Last, Erythritol makes a great bulking agent for low-carb keto baked goods. So overall, in my view, it remains a top contender as one of my top sugar substitutes in baking. Thanks for reading!
