How Can I Cut Down On Free Sugar

Does Sugar Cause Cancer?

Its free sugar were mainly concerned with when it comes to weight gain, not sugar that is naturally found in foods like fruits and milk or healthy starchy foods like wholegrains and pulses .

One of the easiest ways to lower your added sugar is to cut down on sugary drinks, which are the largest source of sugar in the UK diet.

Some sugary drinks, such as fizzy drinks and energy drinks, can have more than the recommended daily maximum amount of free sugar in one serving alone. And while these extra calories promote weight gain, they offer no other nutritional benefits.

Other obviously sugary foods such as sweets, chocolate, cakes and biscuits are all best kept as treats too. But some foods that have hidden high amounts of added sugar may surprise you. Some breakfast cereals, ready meals , pasta sauces and yoghurts can have shocking amounts of sugar added to them. Reading nutrition information labels and checking the ingredients list can help you choose lower sugar options.

While there are steps you and your family can take to cut down on added sugar, making these changes can be easier said than done. And its here that governments need to lend a hand.

How Big Is The Cancer Risk

The study concluded that drinking an extra 100ml of sugary drinks a day – about two cans a week – would increase the risk of developing cancer by 18%.

For every 1,000 people in the study, there were 22 cancers.

So, if they all drank an extra 100ml a day, it would result in four more cancers – taking the total to 26 per 1,000 per five years, according to the researchers.

“However, this assumes that there is a genuine causal link between sugary drink intake and developing cancer and this still needs further research,” said Dr Graham Wheeler, statistician University College London.

Of the 2,193 cancers found during the study, 693 were breast cancers, 291 were prostate cancers and 166 were colorectal cancers.

What Is Your Advice To Cancer Patients

There is no need to ban sugar completely from the diet. Eat everything in moderation, but consume sugar minimally. Focus on eating well with a varied and balanced diet, e.g. eat complex carbs to fuel the body or take higher plant-based foods. Fibre and slow-releasing carbs can reduce cancer risks and provide nutrition for a stronger body. Besides good nutrition, keep active physically.

What To Watch For

It can be tough to track down all the sugar you eat. Itâs hidden in things youâd never expect, like soups, salad dressings, peanut butter, yogurt, ketchup, instant oatmeal, nut milks, and hot dogs.

And often, itâs not even called sugar on the label.

There are more than 60 names for added sugar. Some, like maltose, dextrose and glucose, end in âose.â Also watch for:

  • Fruit nectar
  • Corn, rice, and maple syrups
  • Honey

Sugar Obesity And Breast Cancer

Could eating too much sugar lead to cancer?

Sugar doesnt directly cause breast cancer, or any type of cancer for that matter.1 However, excess energy intake, particularly from processed sugars which contain no significant nutritional value, can cause weight gain and can lead to obesity. Obesity increases the risk of various cancers, including breast cancer.2

Therefore, it is on obesity whose back we need to place a target, not simply sugar. In fact, as part of a balanced and healthful diet, sugar is acceptable in natural forms and when portioned appropriately. Portioning of foods and nutrients is the key here, leading us to focus on this concept not only in relation to sugar but for energy intake as well.

While we need to fill our cars with gas to run, it would be fruitless to overfill them. The same concept applies to our bodies. This point at which we allow adequate fuel to turn into excessive intake is the exact point at which we deviate, drifting in past the gateway that leads to metabolic syndrome to become entangled in dietary patterns that do not serve us.

Explain Why Its Hard To Starve Cancer Of Sugar Just By Changing Your Diet

Because your body has this interesting fail-safe system that never lets your blood glucose level drift below a certain number. So eating less sugar will just make the body use its remaining resources to produce the glucose on its own.

Everything about your biology has been naturally selected for at least 600 million years to make sure that no matter what you eat, you keep enough glucose in your system and dont become deficient. So its very hard to affect the system by changing your diet.

Do Artificial Sweeteners Cause Cancer

You may have heard that artificial sweeteners are the culprit for the increased incidence of cancer in the United States. However, according to the National Cancer Institute, the scientific evidence is unclear whether these sugar-free sweeteners cause cancer. It is recommended that people limit the amount of artificial sweeteners they consume by practicing moderation.

If Sugar Doesnt Cause Cancer Why Worry About It

If cutting out sugar doesnt help treat cancer, why then do we encourage people to cut down on sugary foods in our diet advice?

Thats because there is an indirect link between cancer risk and sugar. Eating lots of sugar over time can cause you to gain weight, and robust scientific evidence shows that being overweight or obese increases the risk of 13 different types of cancer. In fact, obesity is the single biggest preventable cause of cancer after smoking, which weve written about many times before.

And a study published in 2019 suggested there could be something else going on. Researchers found that people who drank more sugary drinks had a slightly increased risk of cancer, regardless of body weight. The study took weight in to account, but there are still lots of answered questions. More studies will be needed to investigate this.

What Is The Association Between Diabetes And Cancer

Does Sugar Cause Cancer

Diabetes is a global epidemic with over 30 million Americans and over 400 million people globally affected by this disease. As per the world health organization, the prevalence of diabetes is increasing more rapidly in low to middle-income countries, this trend being linked to unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity and obesity. There have been multiple studies and meta-analysis that showed a strong correlation between diabetes and increased risk of cancer, but it has always been unclear as to why exactly this is the case. Dr. John Termini and his team from City of Hope, a cancer research institute in California, explored this association and was able to link hyperglycemia to DNA damage, a key cause of developing mutations that can lead to cancer. Dr Termini presented his findings last year in the 2019 American Chemical Society National meeting.

Myth Vs Truth: Sugar And Cancer

By Margaret Martin, RD, MS, LDN, Licensed Dietitian and Nutritionist Certified Diabetes Educator, PearlPoint Cancer Support

You shouldnt eat sugar at all if you have cancer. False!

You CAN have small amounts of sugar, even after a cancer diagnosis. Sugar does NOT cause cancer. The myth that sugar causes cancer gives sugar a bad name.

There are many flavors and foods a person with cancer may not be able to swallow or digest. Weight loss and malnutrition is a concern for many cancer patients. Too many food restrictionssuch as completely eliminating foods with sugarmay keep cancer patients from eating enough or cause unnecessary stress. It takes lots of time, energy, and resources to limit all sugar in a menu. Aim for a healthy amount of sugar intake dailyless than 10 percent of your calories.

When might some moderation in sugar intake be suggested? Lets look at when you might keep an eye on your sugar intake.

Myth : Fruit Has Too Much Sugar

You dont have to limit fruit just because it contains fructose, a naturally occurring sugar. Fructose is only harmful in excessive amounts, and its very difficult to eat enough fruit to reach those levels of fructose in your diet.

Fruit is full of fiber and contains other nutrients, like vitamin C, that are essential for health and bodily function. If you are watching your sugar intake, there are fruits that are higher in sugar than others. These include:

However, the research is far from definitive proof and experts have called for more research.

A Breakthrough In The Connection Between Sugar And Lung Cancer

  • Science

Research is the key to new discoveries in lung health and over the past decade, we’ve seen strides made in lung cancer treatment and care. Personalized treatment is advancing thanks to biomarker testing and targeted therapies. New methods of early detection with low-dose CT scans can increase the chances of survival for individuals at high risk. Still, we know more research is needed to defeat lung cancer.

of the University of Texas at Dallas is a recent American Lung Association research grant recipient who hopes to improve lung cancer treatments, particularly targeted therapies, by studying the connection between glucose and squamous cell carcinoma, a type of lung cancer that accounts for 25 to 30 percent of all lung cancers. Kim and his team have found that sugar serves as an energy supply for this kind of lung cancer, aiding in the tumor’s growth and survival. And upon further investigation, their research suggests that this “addiction” of squamous cell carcinoma to sugar could lead to treatment strategies by interrupting the body’s process of metabolizing sugar or possibly even restricting the amount of sugar in a persons diet. Kim’s findings, “The distinct metabolic phenotype of lung squamous cell carcinoma defines selective vulnerability to glycolytic inhibition,” were published in Nature Communications.

We talked with Dr. Kim to learn more about his research and findings.

Where Does The Idea That Cancer Is Addicted To Sugar Come From

About 90 years ago, a German scientist named Otto Warburg noticed that tumor cells in a dish tended to consume more glucose than non-dividing normal tissues. He also noticed that although the cancer cells were consuming massive amounts of glucose, they werent taking advantage of the most efficient method of harvesting energy from that glucose, which is to essentially burn it using oxygen in the mitochondria. Instead, they converted the glucose to lactate, leaving much of the energy untapped. This has come to be known as the Warburg effect or Warburg metabolism.

Warburg assumed that cancer cells must have a defect in their mitochondria, because why else would they resort to this inefficient method of obtaining energy? But we now know that Warburg was wrong. Tumor cells possess functional mitochondria and rely on them for energy in some situations.

Glucose The Fuel Of Life

Search for sugar and cancer on the internet and it doesnt take long to find alarming warnings that sugar is the white death and cancers favourite food.

But this idea that sugar is responsible for kick-starting or fuelling a cancers growth is an over-simplification of some complicated biology. Lets start with what sugar actually is.

Sugar comes in many different forms. The simplest form is just as a single molecule, such as glucose and fructose. These molecules of simple sugars can also stick together, either in pairs or as longer chains of molecules. All of these combinations of molecules are carbohydrates, and are our bodys main source of energy.

The form of sugar most of us will be familiar with is table sugar, which is a simple sugar that dissolves in water and gives things a sweet taste. Its proper name is sucrose, and its made up of crystals of glucose and fructose. Table sugar is refined, meaning its been processed to extract it from a natural source . Unprocessed foods can be high in simple sugars too, for example honey is nearly pure sugar.

As chains of sugar get longer, they lose their sweet taste and wont dissolve in water anymore. These chains are called polysaccharides and form a large component of starchy foods. Starchy foods such as rice, bread, pasta and vegetables like potatoes might not taste sweet, but they are high in carbohydrate too.

Its here that sugar and cancer start to collide, because cancer is a disease of cells.

Why Is Sugar Bad For You

Foods high in added sugars tend to be heavily processed and low in nutrients, and they may also be high in unhealthy fats. These foods offer little nutritional value to your body and may fill you up and take the place of nutrient-dense foods in your diet.

Excess sugar may lead to unhealthy weight gain, forming fat around the midsection, and high blood-sugar levels, which may cause insulin resistance. Research shows that limiting your intake of added sugars reduces your risk of becoming overweight or obese or developing tooth decay. Excessive sugar consumption has been linked to a higher risk of chronic diseases and conditionsin part by increasing the risk for metabolic syndromeincluding:

Heart disease: The risk of heart disease increases among those who get more than 25 percent of their daily caloric intake from added sugars.

Type 2 diabetes: The risk of diabetes may be reduced by limiting the added sugar intake to 5 percent of total daily calories, which improves glucose tolerance and decreases the prevalence of diabetes and related metabolic abnormalities.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease : Large amounts of added sugars such as fructose may create a buildup of fat in the liver, which may increase the risk of this disease. Carrying extra weight and being inactive also may increase risk. Reducing sugar intake may be of benefit for NAFLD.

How Sugar Can Cause Cancer

Does Fruitarianism Lead To Cancer, Diabetes or Heart Disease?

By Dr. Josh Axe, DC, DNM, CN

Today, I want to tell you about how addictive sugar can cause cancer. With the number of people getting cancer growing each single year, this is a topic that Im really passionate about. My mom has gone through cancer twice, and its an experience I dont want anyone to suffer through if possible. I want to help educate the public on one of the major culprits of this disease, and how we can try to prevent cancer. One culprit? Sugar.

Cancer is a complex disease, and researchers are unraveling its mysteries all the time. But one of the things that we know for sure, thanks to medical studies from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and other institutions, is that sugar can increase your risk of cancer . Weve also known for a long time that cancer is linked to diabetes, obesity and heart disease.

Why is that? Well, there are many reasons, but I want to touch on two recent medical studies. The first has to do with how diabetes and cancer are linked. If youre consuming too much sugar, one of the things that happens is an increase of insulin in the body.

Over time, your insulin receptor sites can burn out, essentially causing something like type 2 diabetes symptoms along with pre-diabetes. When youre getting more sugar than you need, your body responds by increasing levels of a hormone called GIP, and also releasing a protein called s-catenin from your pancreas.

Myth : Sugar Causes Cancer

Theres no research that shows a direct connection between sugar and cancer, or that eliminating sugar from your diet will prevent cancer cells from growing or spreading.

However, consuming too much sugar can cause weight gain, obesity and diabetes, which all can put you at greater risk for many types of cancer, including:

  • Breast

  • Pancreatic

  • Prostate

All cells in our body require glucose for energy. Even if you remove sugar from your diet entirely, the body will make glucose from other sources, including protein and fat.

Association Of Consumption Of Concentrated Sugars With Incidence Of Prostate Cancer

A recent study analyzed data of 22,720 men from the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial who were enrolled between 1993-2001.The study evaluated the association between consumption of added or concentrated sugars in beverages and desserts and prostate cancer risk. After a median follow-up of 9 years, 1996 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The study found that increased consumption of sugars from sugar-sweetened beverages was associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer for men who consumed very high levels of sugar. The study suggested that limiting the intake of sugar from beverages may be important in reducing the risk of prostate cancer. Prostate cancer patients may have to avoid very high intake of concentrated sugar.

Sugar Can Cause Cancer 3 Ways To Fight Back

I want to give you some ideas on some ways in the medical literature that may show you on how to naturally fight cancer and some of these cancer-fighting principles. So obviously we know that too much sugar can cause cancer, obesity and diabetes meanwhile, s-catenin or cancer cells are kind of immortal, so they dont die or die off like other cells and they self-replicate.

There are certain nutrients that have been shown to cause whats called cell apoptosis or cell cytotoxicity. That means that those cancer cells die off, and there are specific herbs that have been shown to do exactly that. Therefore, I want to talk about my top three things for naturally preventing and fighting cancer.

1. Get more fruits and vegetables in your diet

Fruits and vegetables are the most nutrient-dense, cancer-fighting foods and the highest in antioxidants. Now, antioxidants protect your cells against free radical damage against proteins like s-catenin. So if you are lets say, getting too much sugar in your diet, should you eat more blueberries that have tons of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, water and electrolytes even though that it has some natural sugar?

In the January 2016 issue of Cancer Research it was demonstrated that high amounts of dietary sugar in the typical Western diet may increase the risk of breast cancer and metastasis to the lungs. According to study authors:

2. Get more healthy fats in your body

3. Follow what we call theBudwig Protocol
