When talking with a client about how to manage their diabetes, drinking alcohol, specifically beer, is probably one of the most common questions that I am asked right after can I still eat bananas? People are often surprised to learn what is and is NOT recommended.
Heres a brief rundown of the top three misconceptions about alcohol/beer and diabetes.
Misconception 1 – Its never okay to consume alcohol while living with diabetes.
The thing is, while small to moderate amounts of alcohol may cause blood sugar to rise slightly, excess alcohol can actually decrease your blood sugar level up to 24 hours after drinking, causing low blood sugar. You see, signs of low blood sugar can include sweating, slurred speech, weakness, increased heart rate and nausea, unfortunately, these symptoms closely resemble what someone might feel like when they have had too much to drink or are hungover.
Thats why the list, 10 ways to guard you against low blood sugar, was created for the new Your Guide to Diabetes and Beer resource, developed as a collaboration between Diabetes Canada and Beer Canada. This information is vital for people living with diabetes to keep in mind.
Misconception 2 – Beer is especially off limits because its full of carbohydrates .
I think because everyone knows there are carbohydrates in beer its assumed as fact that people living with diabetes can no longer consume beer because it will drastically increase blood sugar.
But Arent Some Sugars Good For Me
Fructose is a naturally occurring sugar found in honey, vine fruits, berries, and most root vegetables. It is an important carbohydrate, your liver converts it into glucose so your body can use it as fuel. But fructose also exists commercially and is bonded with other types of sugars. It is added to products such as fruit juice, and foods that require browning. Fructose is also the sugar used to create high-fructose corn syrup. While in its natural form it can be a good sugar, too much of it can cause other issues.
Fructose is only partially absorbed in the small intestine, and will then travel to the large intestine. Here it will ferment. Long story short, this can lead to gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating, gassiness, diarrhoea, and stomach pain.
Is Vodka Ok For Diabetics
Wines tend to have less carbohydrate than beer so may have a less pronounced affect on sugar levels. Spirits on their ow, such as whiskey, vodka, rum and gin, have no significant carbs in and therefore shouldnt push blood sugar values up. If you have them with a mixer this will need to be taken into account.

Wines Fortified Wines And Champagnes
Red wine generally receives good press thanks to the certain chemical properties it contains.
As youd expect, dry wines and champagnes will have a lower carbohydrate level than sweeter wines and champagnes.

Light Beer And Weight Control
Light beer is low in calories, with 90 to 110 calories per 12-ounce serving depending on the beer. And while it’s OK to drink in moderation — 12 ounces of light beer a day for women and 24 ounces daily for men — it may not help you manage your weight. In addition to lowering blood sugar and making you hungry, alcohol metabolism also delays fat metabolism. That’s because when alcohol is in your bloodstream, the liver puts fatty acid metabolism on hold and breaks down the alcohol first. In essence, your body chooses to use the calories from alcohol for energy instead of those from fat, leaving the fat for later use. And when you’re trying to lose weight, you want to burn the fat first, above anything else.

Some soft drinks are lower in calorie count. With 7 calories per gram, the number of calories in alcohol is second only to fat which has 9 calories per gram.
For example, Bavaria alcohol-free wheat beer contains 3.6g of sugar. Hoegardens full-strength wheat beer contains just 0.1g of sugar. But the overall calorie content of Bavaria is only 27kcal, while Hoegardens is 58.6kcal. So you may want to think about where you are happiest to make your compromise. The British Beer And Pub Association Have Hit Back At A Report Claiming A Pint Of Ale Can Contain Up To Nine Teaspoons Of Sugar
The Daily Mail ran a report today discussing the hidden sugar in alcohol citing that a pint of ale contained nine teaspoons, whereas a large glass of red wine contained just a quarter.
Mulled wine was found to contain 11 teaspoons a glass, a bottle of Magners pear cider eight and a half teaspoons and a pint of Strongbow dry cider three and a half teaspoons of sugar.
Speaking to the Daily Mail cardiologist Dr Aseem Malhotra said the level of sugar was staggering adding that alcohol-related ill health costs the NHS £3.3 billion a year.
However the BBPA have refuted the claims over the level of sugar found in ale saying the assessment is hugely wide off the mark.
In fact, a pint of ale typically contains less than a teaspoon.
While the total carbohydrate content might be higher, this is only because the finished beer contains other sources of carbohydrates, such as soluble fibre, which have positive health benefits.
Most beer will have very little, if any, sugar added during the brewing process, and sugars added will almost entirely be converted into alcohol.

For Women: Women should limit themselves to drinking one drink a day. One drink is equal to an approximate 12 ounces of beer.
For Men: Men, on the other hand, may take pleasure in drinking two drinks a day which will be about 24 ounces of beer.
