Not Sterilizing The Hummingbird Feeder

At least once a month you should soak feeders in a bleach solution before rinsing it thoroughly. Sterilizing the feeder helps avoid fermentation, mold or fungus that can harm hummingbirds. Some glass hummingbird feeders are dishwasher safe. Its always best to check the recommendations of your feeders manufacturer.

Hummingbird Feeder Insect Pests

Hymenoptera are insects that include wasps, bees, and ants. Most species can sting, as well as bite. These are the primary competitors of the hummingbirds for your hummingbird food nectar.

Bees and wasps can be kept away from hummingbird feeders by the design of the feeding port. The hummingbird nectar should not be near the opening. Thus, only the long bill and tongue of the hummingbird should be able to reach down through the feeding port to the liquid.

Bees are attracted to yellow, hummingbirds to red. Choose a hummingbird feeder with red and no yellow, especially at the feeding port.

Hummingbirds eat small insects, such as fruit flies and gnats. Apparently, though, they don’t have an appetite for ants. Ants can quickly take over a feeder and keep hummingbirds away. Because ants are small they can crawl down and reach the nectar. Some hummingbird feeders have an ant moat–a cup of water with hooks between the hanger and the feeder.

Insects can quickly contaminate the nectar in hummingbird feeders and should be eliminated.

How Often Should I Change The Sugar Water

  • Sugar water does not stay fresh very long.It lasts just 4-5 days in the refrigerator and can spoil quickly outside depending on how hot it is.
  • I find it needs changing every second day in moderate weather and twice daily on hot days .If we have a heat wave, I take the feeders down because they will go moldy.

Will Feeding Hummingbirds Hurt Their Migration Patterns

If you are worried about the birds sticking around too long due to an easy food source, dont be. The National Audubon Society, the authority on all things birds, says hummingbirds are programmed when to leave. Even if you provide easy food, theyll know its time to head south and will still do so at their normal time.

Is White Sugar Safe For Hummingbirds

Is It OK To Feed Hummingbirds Sugar Water?

Your hummingbirds natural food source is flower nectar, which is a sugar solution that contains small amounts of electrolytes and amino acids. Flower nectar is mainly sucrose, as opposed to glucose or fructose. White sugar is also sucrose and is free of contaminants that are toxic to hummers, which is why it is the best kind of sugar to feed hummingbirds.

No, never ever add honey, brown sugar, maple syrup, artificial sweeteners, or even red dye to your bird feeders. It can harm or kill your birdies. And send your bird loving friends into cardiac arrest!

Theres really ONE best recipe Ive found after reading scores of birding sites to most safely mimic real nectar found in flowersthats white sugar and water.

What Should I Avoid When Making Hummingbird Nectar

Using Red Dye: Even though hummingbirds are naturally attracted to the color red, That doesnt mean coloring the nectar with red dye is a good idea. Since most Nectar Feeders in the market have either a red base or top, adding a chemical to the nectar will be unnecessary at best and harmful at worst.

Using Sugar Alternatives: Even though using sugar alternatives like honey, stevia or xylitol make seem like a good idea, It can be a very bad idea to use them since using too much or even too little can be very toxic for hummingbirds when mixed with water.

Using Brown/Powder Sugar: Anything other than your regular table sugar tend to cause problems to hummingbirds.

Should Hummingbird Feeders Be In Sun Or Shade

The feeder needs to be somewhere the hummingbirds will see it and feel safe using it.

Because sugar water can spoil quickly in heat, its ideal if the feeder is located in a shady spot. Be mindful though that surrounding trees and shrubs give predators cover so it may not be the best choice in your garden.

How to make Hummingbird Nectar ~ Homemade Hummingbird Sugar Water ~ Nectar

Question #1: Everything I find online uses the 1:4 ratio, so Im wondering why you use a more concentrated syrup?

Theres a really interesting scholarly article over at the LSU Museum of Natural Science website called A Primer on Sucrose Solutions. In it, the author explains the proper way to calculate the concentration of a solution that is formed when a solid is dissolved into a liquid. This formula is different from the formula chemists use to determine a concentration when both components are liquids.

I definitely recommend checking out the above link for the nitty-gritty details. But the bottom line is that websites that say a 1:4 sucrose -to-water ratio is a 20% solution are incorrect. Why? These sources are using the liquid+liquid formula and not the solid+liquid formula.

Using the proper solid+liquid formula, the 1:4 sucrose-to-water ratio actually produces a sucrose concentration of 17.9%.

Using this same solid+liquid methodology, the 1:3 sugar-to-water ratio produces a sucrose concentration of 22.5%.

The article mentions that several published studies have found that the sucrose concentration of the nectar in hummingbird flowers is 23.9%. Therefore, it concludes that If we wanted to duplicate the sugar content of flowers in our feeders, we would use a recipe of 1 C sucrose : 3 C water, which results in a sucrose concentration of 22.5% .

Is Store Bought Hummingbird Nectar Safe

Even though most commercial nectar bottles are safe for hummingbirds, I would still suggest you stick with your homemade solution mostly because of of a couple of reasons which are:

  • More expensive.
  • Contain extra unnecessary chemicals.
  • The coloring used in the commercial nectar can decreases reproduction rates and increases the incidence of both internal and skin tumors .

What Can You Use Instead Of Tap Water

Instead of tap water, you can use distilled water.

However, when the water is being distilled, it lacks essential minerals that hummingbirds must need to consume. If youre going to use distilled water, it will be good to add a pinch of sodium-free salt to the water to ensure potassium chloride in the mixture.

Remember that you need not use table salt if you use tap water.

How To Attract And Feed Hummingbirds

Diluted white sugar most closely resembles the sucrose nectar of flowers the birds feed on. You can easily fill your feeders with sugar water. Mix four parts water to one part white sugar and then boil, cool and fill the feeder. Remember to clean and refill your feeder every few days, especially in hot weather. A dirty or moldy feeder can make hummingbirds sick.

Dont ever use brown sugar, honey, or any other type of sweetener, which can harm a hummingbird. For example, brown sugar has too much iron in it. Try not to make it too much sweeter than a 4:1 ratio because it is harder for them to digest. There is such a thing as too sweet, even for a hummingbird.

Did you know that hummingbirds probably dont want red dye added to their sugar water? Red dye serves no healthy purpose for their body . Most red dyes are petroleum-based, and it makes their poop red, which is unnatural.

The red color on your feeder is enough for a hummingbird to find it. Or consider planting some red or purple flowers in your garden, like Salvias or Monardas hummingbirds love them and theyre great sources of insects too.

So dont be shocked if a hummingbird zips past you feeder and ignores a fresh batch of sugar water. It might be focused on getting its protein fix and catching a flying gnat right out of the air.

Is It Safe to Freeze Hummingbird Nectar?

Like all birds, hummingbirds love insects and nectar, and these are found in every garden and field all over the country. They are also attracted to sugar water, as it tastes like flower nectar, so putting this in a feeder can help attract them to your garden.

Your garden will already contain lots of things which will attract hummingbirds to feed. Insects and spiders, which are in every garden, provide hummingbirds with a good supply of protein and they love hovering and feeding on tree sap.

Another way of attracting birds is to make sure that any flowers you grow are rich in nectar. This also provides them with essential minerals and nutrients to keep them healthy.

Some people believe that growing red flowers is a good way to attract hummers. While it is true that some red flowers can provide excellent nectar, not all of them do. Hummingbirds are very intelligent when it comes to remembering the best sources of food. They will soon learn where the best feeders are and they are attracted to flowers which provide the best nectar regardless of color.

The ratio of sugar and water can be slightly adjusted in this hummingbird nectar recipe, but a solution that is too sweet will be difficult for the birds to digest and one that does not contain enough sugar will not be suitable to attract hummingbirds. The 4:1 water to sugar ratio most closely approximates the sucrose levels in the natural nectar of hummingbirds’ favorite flowers.

The two most important issues to consider in selecting hummingbird feeders are how easy they are to take apart and clean, and how large they are.

The best-sized feeders are those that are emptied every day or two by the hummingbirds you have. Bacteria and mold grow in sugar water, and sugar ferments, so hummingbird water should never be left out for more than two or three days, and changed daily in very hot weather. The easier it is to clean a hummingbird feeder, the more likely you are to do it often and well. The fill hole should be large enough for you to be able to get a bottlebrush inside, and every crevice should be easy to scrub.

Bottle or tube hummingbird feeders can be glass or plastic, often with red plastic flowers and bee guards on the feeding ports. If the bee guards are yellow, they may, ironically, attract bees.
