Replenishing these electrolytes during lengthy exercise is important because they help your nerves and muscles function properly, maintain healthy blood pressure, and rebuild damaged muscle tissue.

What Sweetener Does Powerade Zero Have

Powerade Zero contains two artificial sweeteners, sucralose and acesulfame potassium. Both of these sweeteners are FDA approved and generally recognized as safe, but there remains some controversy around the long-term health impacts of each.

The most widely controversial artificial sweetener is probably aspartame. Personally, I avoid aspartame because of the research showing possible connections to depression. Powerade Zero does not contain aspartame.

Another sweetener people sometimes have questions about is xylitol, especially since it is bad for dogs. Powerade Zero does not contain xylitol.

So lets look at the health concerns around the sweeteners in Powerade Zero, sucralose and acesulfame K.

    First, lets cover sucralose:

    • Sucralose seems to be a migraine trigger for some people.
    • Sucralose may cause insulin resistance through multiplemechanisms .
    • Sucralose has been shown to have a surprisingly minimal effect on weight loss.

    What about acesulfame K?

    • Studies in the 1970s suggested that acesulfame K might cause cancerbut the studies were of poor quality.
    • One breakdown product of acesulfame K, acetoacetamide, may cause damage to the thyroid.
    • In a study of lactating women, acesulfame K was the artificial sweetener most found to make its way into breast milk.

Most of the health concerns around artificial sweeteners are not well proven, but for many people, the risk feels scary nonetheless.

    What Is The Keto Diet

The keto diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet. Its similar to the Atkins diet and other low-carb diets.

The first goal of the keto diet is have a low amount of net carbohydrates. Net carbs are the total amount of carbohydrates in a food minus the amount of fiber. For example, if a food has 30 grams of carbohydrates and 20 grams of fiber, its net carbs would be ten.

The second goal of the keto diet is to force your body to burn fat for energy, instead of carbohydrates. This process is called ketosis. When your body is in ketosis, it breaks down fat into ketones, which are then used for energy.

    Should You Drink Powerade

Powerade is marketed as a sports drink and, in that context, it might be helpful. The combination of electrolytes, sugar, and water can help athletes to rehydrate quickly, while also providing them with energy and keeping their electrolytes well-balanced.

Even the sugar and calories in Powerade might not be bad for high performance athletes, as they are burning calories as part of their exercise.

The biggest problem comes when people treat sports drinks as just another beverage. Unless youre exercising heavily, youre not going to need the extra electrolytes in Powerade. They might even be dangerous if you drink Powerade too often.

The sugar and artificial ingredients wont do you any favors either.

Also, if youre going to use Powerade, pay close attention to the amount that you drink and the frequency. Be careful with the ingredients label too, as this can be a little misleading.

For example, the 28 fl oz. version of the blue Powerade contains 80 calories per serving and 21 grams of added sugar. But, that isnt the total for the whole bottle, as there are 2.5 servings in the bottle.

how Gatorade 0 affects your blood sugar

Powerade Zero comes in six thirst quenching flavours. These are as follows:

The only flavours I have tried are Mixed Berry and Orange.

I love the mixed berry, and it is sometimes hard to find it at my local supermarket! Im not sure what type of berries that they used but its definitely a pleasant flavour.

Its a nice change from water, even if it does contain High Fructose Corn Syrup ). It leaves no weird aftertaste despite being a diet type drink and hydrates quite well!

If I talk about the Orange flavour, the taste is perfect when combined with a tall mug of ice!

As its quite refreshing and replenishing, especially when its served cold.

I have not tried all the other flavours yet, but if you have, let us know in the comments below what you think!

Gatorade / Powerade: Good Or Bad

Seems these days that everyone who takes a walk around the block needs fluid, sugar, and electrolytesand they need it now! Maybe even before the walk, maybe a bit after the walk, and of course during the walk. Really? Gatorade, Powerade, and all the other ades out there are over-marketed, and WAY over-consumed. They benefit certain hard-charging, long-enduring athletes, but slow down the efforts of many users that dont fit the originally-intended user profile. Granted, especially in this heat, a walk around the block probably warrants extra fluid intake but do you need a sports drink? What if you ran around three blocks? Congrats, but your body can give you a lot more effort than that before it needs help from high-fructose corn syrup, red #40, and a multi-billion dollar corporation. Lets look at why these are overrated for most people:

So what if you are exercising intensely long enough to drain your muscles of glycogen, and sweating enough in these high-heat conditions to dangerously lower electrolytes? Is there any way to maintain peak exercise performance while staying hydrated, and avoid harmful synthetic ingredients? You bet.

So now you realize that for most, sports drinks are unnecessary. But if you fit the category of hard-charging, long-enduring athlete, congrats! You can and should enjoy the benefits of a beverage filled with water, electrolytes, carbs, and even a bit of protein during your exercise.

Does Powerade Zero Affect Blood Sugar

I wasnt able to find any research directly on whether Powerade Zero raises blood sugar. However, Powerade Zero contains sucralose, which has been shown to affect insulin resistance.

Sucralose is not absorbed in the small intestine like normal sugar, so it ends up in the large intestine. Apparently, it alters your gut bacteria there, affecting your tolerance to carbs.

I also found discussions of artificial sweeteners causing insulin issues through another mechanism. That is, the sweet taste of sucralose may trigger an insulin response even without real sugar in your bloodstream.

So, proceed with caution. If blood-sugar control is crucial for you, Id recommend testing whether Powerade Zero has any affect for you.
