To figure out how many units there are in your bottle of wine, you need to know the wines alcohol by volume . You can find this information printed on the label it will say a number followed by %.

You can work out the units in a bottle of wine by a simple formula:

I.e. if you want to know how many units your 13% ABV 250ml glass of red wine has, its:

/ 1000 3.25 units.

Just FYI the recommended number of alcohol units per week for both men and women is 14 units. This equates to approximately 1.5 bottles of 12% ABV wine.

Low Calories Does Not Mean Low Carbs

Alcohol free drinks tend to have lower calories than their alcoholic comparatives purely because they exclude the alcohol. With its seven calories per gram , alcohol can make drinks high in calories. However, removing alcohol doesn’t get reflected in a reduction in carbs simply because alcohol doesn’t contain any carbs.

Non-alcoholic wines can contain some sugar due to the way they are made. They start life as traditional wine from fermented grapes then are dealcoholised to remove the alcohol. However, the dealcoholisation process can reduce the flavour and aroma so its not fermented until its a strong wine leaving a small amount of sugar.

After the wine has been through the dealcoholisation process, this residual sugar still remains in the wine, leaving a higher sugar content compared to traditional alcoholic wines. In addition, some non-alcoholic wines have sugar added back to give them a richer mouth feel.

For those wine lovers on a low carb diet, this can be a problem. The best thing to do is look for the non-alcoholic wines with the lowest carb & sugar content.

How Did This Pesky Sugar End Up In My Wine

The sugar in wine is called Residual Sugar or RS.

That means the sugar in wine is what remains after grapes have gone through the winemaking process. Grapes contain fruit sugars and the residual sugar is whats left after yeast has chomped on those sugars.

Dry vs. Sweet WineDuring winemaking, yeast eats up sugar and makes ethanol as a by-product. When the yeast is able to eat up all the sugar the result is a dry wine higher in alcohol content and low in sugar. When the yeast is is stopped by a winemaker sugar remains and alcohol is lower.

This is why many sweet wines have less alcohol than dry wines! A great example of this is German Riesling, which has about 89% alcohol by volume if its sweet and 1011% ABV when its dry.

How Much Sugar Is In Wine

Wine contains residual sugar, and its just part and parcel of drinking wine, it doesnt necessarily mean that your wine has had sugar added in. The naturally occurring sugars in the grapes are eaten by the yeast and turned into ethanol the alcohol, as a by-product during the fermentation process.

  • Dry white and dry red wines

Essentially, the dryer a wine, the less sugar it has as the yeast has eaten all the sugars in the grapes. Dry wines have lower residual levels, ranging from 1 to 3 grams per litre of wine.

The amount of naturally occurring sugar in wine depends on the winemaking fermentation process turning the grape juice into wine. A winemaker can change the process’s length depending on what kind of vino they hope to create. If the winemaker wants to make a sweet wine, they will stop the fermentation process before the yeast eats all of the sugar. The result is a wine with a touch of sweetness due to the residual sugar. Well, it’s a touch of sweetness for others, it’s a whole lot of sweetness. Some of these sweet wines can have somewhere between 21-130 grams of sugar per five ounces. On the other hand, if a winemaker wants to make a dry wine, they will let the yeast do its thing, leaving a wine with zero to six grams of sugar per 5-ounce glass.
