Classic Old Fashioned Cocktail

What is an Old Fashioned and where does it come from? | How to Drink

Happy new year !!! Weve officially started 2018! The beginning of a new year always starts off by looking back on what happened the year before. 2017 may have been a year of some serious ups and downs, but I did manage to do something pretty awesome in September. I even got a new stamp in my passport and jetted off to Japan!

All in all, it was a pretty big year. Now, its time to look forward, but not without a quick *cheers* first! Which is why, at the start of get fit January , Im sharing one of my favorite go to happy hour beverages, the Classic Old Fashioned Cocktail.

Turns out, this is the easiest, quickest drink to make ever and its just SO tasty. Im a whiskey person myself, particularly bourbon, so it should come as no surprise that the classic old fashioned is one of my go to drinks of choice. If I had known how easy it is to make, I could have definitely saved a trip to the local watering hole and made them at home! Way easier on the wallet too.

You literally only need 6 things, plus ice. Particularly a large singular ice cube if youre being traditional. We have a mold that forms orbs and I feel like Im in a speak easy in New York in the 1920s whenever we use it. Its fabulous ????.

Literally that easy. If you find it to be too potent , go ahead and add a another splash of club soda. Also, you can add a little more simple syrup, up to 1 ½ teaspoons. I wouldnt add a whole other sugar cube though, way too much sweet to be an old fashioned!

Runner Up Best Craft: Whites Elixirs

Whites was started by cocktail enthusiast Brad White after a visit to Nashvilles Patterson House where he tasted a syrup that inspired him to start crafting his own. Whites Elixirs produces cocktail mixes made with pure cane sugar and other real ingredients. In the case of the Old Fashioned mix, that means orange zest, aromatic bitters, orange bitters, orange oil extract, gentian root, and a touch of citric acid. The result is a mix that enhances the sweetness of the whiskey while adding deliciously nutty notes and a punch of orange.

What Makes It Old

Back in the early 1800s, the very first known recipe for a cocktail was essentially a spirit with sugar, bitters and water. As the general concept of the cocktail gained popularity, modifications were created by adding different liqueurs. This was considered fancy and an indication of wealth as not everyone could afford the expensive elaborations.

This led many traditional cocktail drinkers to request the old-fashioned whiskey cocktail. The name has stuck ever since.

How Many Calories In Whiskey

Old

Whiskey generally contains around 100-110 calories per 1.5 ounce shot, though this will vary depending on the proof. Therefore, a standard 750ml bottle of whiskey would contain around 810-885 calories.

In terms of calories and alcohol content, it is one of the most diet-friendly alcoholic beverages available. Unlike beer and wine, this beverage has no sugar, no fat, and no carbohydrates in its ingredients. Whiskey calories are almost entirely derived from alcohol, which is higher in calories than protein and carbohydrates but lower in fat.

Top 10 Ways Bartenders Screw Up My Old Fashioneds

How I Make an Old Fashioned | the ONE cocktail you must know

Plus, how to make one properly.

The Old Fashioned is one of a few common cocktails for me, both when Im at home and when Im out. However, when ordering one at a bar, the likelihood of something going mildly to terribly wrong is disturbingly high.

That in mind, I present the Top 10 Ways Bartenders Screw Up My Old Fashioneds, followed by instructions for how to make one properly.

Garnish

This is not a girlie drink. I do not want a garnish with an orange peel and a cherry attached. A plain swizzle stick is fine.

Glassware

An Old Fashioned is served in an old fashioned glass. Why do you think they call it an old fashioned glass? Dont get cutesy with me. The sides of the glass should be straight, unless your bar has only stupid angled glassware, in which case Im not sure why Im there in the first place.

Bitterless

There was an Angostura bitters shortage last year, and I think a number of bartenders never stopped scrimping. 2-3 generous dashes is appropriate. If I cant taste the bitters, you did something wrong.

Default Liquor

If you are just pouring from the well instead of asking for a liquor preference, you are cheating me out of a chance to tune the drink to my mood. Unlike a vodka drink, an Old Fashioneds taste changes considerably based on the type and brand of liquor used. Whiskey, rye, and bourbon are all appropriate choices. I tend to choose different ones at different times.

Ice For An Old Fashioned

Ice serves a basic purpose a way to make a cold drink. But it also has the ability to elevate a drink to bar-style quality. You have a few options with your ice, but we have a preferred one for an Old Fashioned. Heres what we tested:

  • Use your standard ice cube to make the drink/fill the glass
  • Use small square cubes
  • Use large square cubes
  • Our favorite: Use clear square cubes

A quick note on clear ice cubes. They melt slower and keep your drink cooler. Making clear ice cubes isnt as easy as it sounds. Some of it comes down to the purity of the water, but the real trick to making clear ice at home is slowly chilling the water.

We tested multiple makers to do this at home and by far our favorite was the True Cubes ice mold.

Variations On The Old Fashioned

And thats it: how to make a perfect Old Fashioned recipe! Once youve made it a few times, you may want to mix it up a bit. Here are Old Fashioned variations we love:

Garnish With An Orange Twist

Garnish the drink with an orange peel. Cut off a piece of orange peel about 2 in long and twist the peel over the Old Fashioned to get the oils out. Make sure the orange peel isn’t touching the rim of the rocks glass when you drop it into the drink. This step is necessary to follow as it will impart a bit of acidity into the drink and give it a little extra flavour.

Follow The Historical Advice On Ice

Natural Old Fashioned Brown Sugar Lantic 1 kg delivery

Within Wondrichâs old-fashioned notes is a fascinating section about the proper ice to use in this drink. It turns out that ice balls and 2-inch cubes are nothing new they just got lost in the American bar until a relatively recent revival. The large cubeâs reference dates to 1899, when ââ¦mixologically ambitious saloons preferred to refrigerate their old-fashioned with ice cut into âperfect cubes about two inches on a side.’â

It follows the same theory used to chill and slightly dilute straight whiskey. Those fancy ice machines that are so convenient today and produce tiny, fast-melting âcubesâ ruined it for many years. If you are an old-fashioned devotee and have not made the switch to 2-inch ice, itâs the last step in perfecting this drink.

Is There Sugar In Bourbon

IS THERE SUGAR IN BOURBON?

We all know that whiskey isnt a health food. But if youre watching your sugar intake, theres good news. Straight distilled spirits like bourbon, rye, and other whiskeys have a lower sugar content than any other alcoholic drink.

True bourbonthat is, bourbon with no flavorings or sweetenercontains virtually no sugar. The USDA nutrition facts for whiskey register 0 grams of sugar in a 1.5 oz serving. For comparisons sake, a 12 oz light beer contains about .3 grams of sugar, a six ounce glass of white wine has 1.73 grams of sugar, and a 12 oz bottle of cider contains just over 21 g of sugar.

Youll note we said virtually. Thats because a minuscule amount of wood sugar does dissolve into the whiskey from the barrel. However, its such a small amount that it hardly registers on the palate, or on laboratory equipment. Whiskeys aged in sweet wine barrels, like some of our Private Release whiskeys finished in ice wine or Pineau de Charentes casks, might contain a touch more.

Still, if youre trying to limit your sugar intake, straight spirits wont derail your efforts. However, things start to get sticky when you add mixers. Juice, soda, syrups, liqueurs, and even vermouth contain a much larger amount of sugar than straight spirits. That means cocktails can be tricky for a true low-sugar diet.

Key Elements Of An Old Fashioned & How To Hack Them

1. Sugar: The Old Fashioned is traditionally made with either granulated white sugar or a sugar cube. Superfine bar sugar is fast-dissolving and eliminates the potential for a crunchy cocktail, as does simple syrup.

If youre avoiding white sugar, try anothersweetener. Theres a lot of variety in the world of cocktail sweeteners. Here are equivalencies for some common household sweeteners, although you can always adjust to suit your personal sweet tooth.

2. Bitters: Bitters are an integral part of holding the drink together. Its almost like adding salt and pepper to a food dish, Treadway says, adding that the bitters can make the other flavors in the cocktail taste even better.

No bitters? Dont skip, replace. An Old Fashioned without bitters lacks intrigue and balance. Treadway says you can achieve a good approximation with the tannins of black tea and bitter citrus peel. Simply steep one strong black tea bag in ½ cup of hot water for 5-10 minutes. Remove the tea bag and add ¼ cup sugar to the hot tea. Stir until dissolved. Use this simple syrup as your sweetener, muddling it with several citrus peels, for a balanced cocktail.

3. Garnish: If you must maraschino, limit it to a single cherry. And aim to add an orange or lemon twist, which lend a blast of citrus oil and aromatics when you first sip the drink, according to Treadway.

How To Calculate Sugar On Food Labels:

The Food and Drug Administration recently did a much needed update to the traditional nutrition facts label box that you see on foods and beverages. One of the main changes to the label is that both total sugars and added sugars are now listed.

Total sugars includes both added sugars and natural sugars together, whereas the added sugar value underneath depicts the amount of sugar that has been added to the product which is the type we should try to limit. Since added sugars are part of the total sugar count, they can never exceed the total sugar number.

Many dairy products, like yogurt for example, contain natural sugars but often have significant amounts of added caloric sweeteners incorporated for flavor. If you want to calculate the amount of natural sugars in a food or beverage, simply subtract the added sugar number from the total sugar value. And remember that the ingredients list on any food panel goes by weight. If a food lists added sugar as the first ingredient, it’s likely to have poor nutritional value and may be calorically dense.

How bad can they be? Canned Old Fashioned | How to Drink

Courtesy of Live Wire

Created by industry veteran Chris Patino of San Diegos Raised by Wolves, this ready-to-drink Old Fashioned should be in every cocktail lovers freezer, ready to be poured when guests stop by or at the end of a long day. Its made with a blend of rye whiskey, apple brandy, and cherry bark-vanilla bitters from Bittercube.

I think that rye whiskey makes for a more complex cocktail in terms of flavor, plus it’s typically not as sweet as bourbon. And I really like the spicy notes that it adds, especially in tandem with aged apple brandy, says Patino. Regarding the unorthodox addition of apple brandy, Patino says, I think the world needs to drink more brandy in general. But in the case of the Alley Cat OF, I was looking to do something different. I knew that rye whiskey would play a big part in the recipe, but it needed a boost. That’s when we came across some beautiful aged apple brandy produced by our good friends at Ventura Spirits. As soon as I tried it, I knew that it would work perfectly. The result is a balanced, bright, 39% ABV cocktail that only requires the addition of an orange twist.
