Even though some outside the diabetes community dont think so, and they try to convince us that we cant or shouldnt, the fact remains that an ice cream cone every once in a while isnt going to make us lose weight. The first is to eat a low-carb, high-fat diet.

    This will help your body get rid of the excess sugar thats been stored in your liver and pancreas. It will also help you feel fuller for longer, which means youll be less likely to overeat when youre hungry. Youll also be able to control your insulin levels, so you wont have to worry about having too much or too little insulin in the first place.

    What Studies Say About Sugar

    While sugar-free candy itself hasnt been studied extensively, the artificial sweeteners it contains have. A review of 37 studies published in 2017 in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that artificial sweeteners were linked with a modest increase in the risk of type 2 diabetes, among other ailments. Another review cites research that suggests that consuming artificial sweeteners regularly may be dangerous for people with diabetes. Thats because those sweeteners are associated with an increased risk of obesity, which can further worsen glucose intolerance.

    That doesnt mean you have to completely swear off sugar-free treats if you have diabetes or are at risk of it. Other research on humans suggests that regular sugar may be comparatively more damaging to those individuals. One study, for example, directly compared the different effects of sugary beverages and artificially sweetened beverages. The researchers observed that regular consumption of artificially sweetened drinks was associated with a 21 percent increase in the risk of diabetes. But the level of increased risk rose by 43 percent when the drinks were sweetened with regular sugar instead.

    In another review published in 2021 in Frontiers in Nutrition, the authors wrote that more long-term human studies are needed to determine the health effects of artificial sweeteners over time.

    When I started on my health journey many years ago, I was a sucker for sugar free products. With limited knowledge about nutrition, I just assumed that if something was sugar free that it was healthier. I mean, were taught that sugar is about the least healthy thing there is, right?

    But sugar free cookies are still just cookies.

    Theres a market for sugar free products if you are diabetic. Thats a much different story. But we seem to gravitate towards sugar free / low sugar products as a means of weight loss, and that is incredibly misguided.

    If you want to lose weight, you need to control your calories- there is no way around it. While cutting out sugar may help you achieve a caloric deficit, simply eating sugar free foods will do absolutely nothing for your weight loss efforts.

    In the above example, these cookies are almost identical in macros. Yes, the sugar free cookies have the tiniest advantage, but they are basically the same. Will choosing the sugar free cookies be healthier than eating Chips Ahoy? Not exactly. Especially if you are sensitive to artificial sweeteners. Its easy to assume that they would be the better choice, but there really is not much of a difference at all.

    Sugar isnt the problem. Even if it was, consuming sugar free products wouldnt be the solution.
